Safe wood cutting discs for angle grinder (angle grinder)
An angle grinder, or simply an angle grinder, is one of the most common electric cutting tools. It is mainly used for cutting metal (with a metal disc) and for cutting concrete (with a diamond sand disc).
angle grinder is also used for grinding wood, stone (also with appropriate accessories. petal or “turtle”).
Something new with an angle grinder | Best carving tool
But for sawing wood, the angle grinder is considered a dangerous tool. Conventional discs for metal and concrete are not suitable (the wood is charred). And a circular saw blade like a circular saw is dangerous. Wood is the material in which the disk can be clamped and you can get serious injury if you rip the angle grinder out of hand.
Such a disk, even with carbide tips are highly discouraged to use on the angle grinder. There are many teeth on the disc, and each one adds effort when cutting. There is a risk of clamping the disk.
But cutting disc technology does not stand still. There are quite safe discs for wood for angle grinder. The first option is a three-toothed, carbide-tipped wood disc:
The blade has only three teeth and these are thicker than the blade itself. For this reason, the rotational resistance of the disc while cutting wood is minimal and it is virtually impossible to jam it, even in hard wood. safety is provided by the geometry of the disc: after the tooth, a part of the disc is cut off. This, too, is made for less resistance of the blade when sawing. Manufacturers write about the use of such a disc up to 12 200 rpm. Most of these discs have a diameter of 125 mm.
Besides wood, this disk can also be used to cut plywood, particleboard, plastic and even aerated concrete. According to reviews, the disc saws these materials like oil.
The next wood disc for the angle grinder is a cutting disc with a carbide grain:
According to reviews, such a wood disc saws more evenly than the first, but also slower. Both do not heat the wood, no charring. For more information on the capabilities of the discs, you can watch this video:
discs are not new, but not everyone knows about them. The cost of discs:
A wood cutting disc with a carbide grain is a little more expensive than a three-toothed disc (taking into account the choice of discs of the same brand).
But even if you work with such discs never violate safety rules: disc on the angle grinder must rotate so that sparks (or sawdust) flew to you. In this case, if the disc breaks, its parts will fly away from you or under your feet (other directions are protected by a protective cover). And an angle grinder will rip the disc away from you when you clamp it. And there must not be any dangling elements on your clothes.
And another wood disc on an angle grinder is a chain drive like a gasoline or electric saw:
It consists of two discs with a chain (riveted into a ring) clamped between them. There are 14 teeth on a 125 mm disc. They create enough resistance to rotation. According to reviews, if there is a knot in the way of cutting, you feel the impact and the angle grinder rips out. That’s why I wouldn’t use this particular disc for sawing wood.
Basically, such a disc is used by craftsmen to give a smooth shape to their products: for sculptures, bowls, wooden sinks. This disc is used to tap the rock. Cost of the disc:
But in order to further protect yourself when cutting with such disks on the angle grinder, you need to use these attachments, which will turn the angle grinder in a kind of circular saw:
There are many variants of such guides on the angle grinder. It’s a kind of stop. If you hit a knot in the wood or a nail, the angle grinder will not vomit out of hands. All the force from clamping the disc will be transmitted to the guide. You can see the variants and here:
As you can see from these examples, sawing and woodworking with an angle grinder is possible and can be done quite safely. If anyone has worked with such discs. write your opinion or a short review.

When working with an angle grinder, regardless of what kind of disc is installed, it is necessary to strictly observe the safety requirements.
- The tool must necessarily be equipped with a thrust handle and a protective cover.
- All work must be carried out in protective clothing and personal protective equipment. Also it is necessary to be very careful with the choice of glasses or a mask, because damage to the eyes (according to statistics, this is the most common injury) can be obtained even from a small chip or splinter of the circle itself.

Wood disc GRAFF Speedcutter for angle grinder example of work
Everyone knows that the main purpose of an angle grinder is to work on metal and stone. But, it turns out, the angle grinder can be successfully processed and wood. And the GRAFF Speedcutter for angle grinder will help you to do it. The disc ingeniously solved the problem of limiting the feed to avoid such hazards as bumping while sawing and running away of the tool. GRAFF Speedcutter is a three toothed saw blade designed for use with angle grinders (angle grinder) with speeds up to 12 200 rpm. Bought it, tried it, did not regret it. See examples of woodworking with the GRAFF Speedcutter. Photos and video attached.
Of course, you can easily cut wood with a disk designed for metal. Many people probably did so at the construction site. What can be said here? First of all, even outdoors, the smell of burnt wood will be well felt in a radius of 10 meters. In addition, the speed of work in this case will limp. Not to mention the fact that the abrasive disk is not designed to work with an angle grinder to cut wood, its main purpose to cut metal.
It is important to note that the thickness of the board to be sawn should not exceed 4 centimeters!
As for the advantages of such a solution, then in the end you get a beautiful and smooth cut, and in the process of sawing sawdust will not fly in different directions.
Technique of wood grind angle grinder
Getting to the processing of wood with an angle grinder, it is necessary to keep in mind two main points:
- Do not treat the surface of the workpiece with the entire area of the sanding disc, since there may be traces of the disc. Only the upper part of the nozzle is used.
- While sanding, the angle grinder is guided along the fibers of the wood: it will not leave traces. It is important to find a fulcrum so that your hands do not get tired.
The overall process of sanding wooden surfaces angle grinder is divided into several distinct phases:
- Preliminary coating preparation. All remnants of previous paint, varnish are removed by abrasive sanding discs. It is also worth making sure that no nails or screws stick out of the floor or wall, if it is going to be sanded. Protruding fasteners should be removed, and if impossible, they should be immersed into the surface as deeply as possible, so that they do not interfere with the work of the angle grinder.
There are two more mandatory rules about sanding floors. Even if the angle grinder to work only a small area of the floor, it is recommended to remove all furniture from the room, and the doorways and windows to cover the thick film or cloth to protect against dust. Any cracks, gaps in the work surface are not allowed. Only after the holes are filled with a special wood filler and dry, you can begin sanding.
- Initial sanding. It is performed with discs of coarse grit in the range of Р20-Р40. If at hand there is no such a circle, you can cut and stick on the nozzle angle grinder piece of sandpaper. Perform 2-3 passes of the angle grinder over the entire working area. At this stage it is especially important to control the force of pressure on the nozzle: weak. the processing will not be good enough, too strong. a lot of load on the motor of the angle grinder.
- Fine sanding. Changeable petal nozzles of different grits are used. from P60 to P80. The master makes 1-2 complete passes on the workpiece.
- Grinding the gaps. After sanding all gaps must be removed. Сначала по ним проходятся насадкой с минимальной зернистостью, а после обработанные участки шпаклюются. Two points must be stressed here. In places that are difficult to reach with a nozzle, you will have to treat by hand. Plus, during the grinding a lot of dust is generated, and we must not forget to remove it in time.
The final sanding steps
The final polishing of the wooden surface is performed with sanding discs made of felt and soft cloth, marked P100 or P120. On the wood is previously applied a wax-based polishing paste, and then made 1-2 passes along the treated surface area. After polishing, you only need to prime the surface. Priming not only smoothes out any small rough spots, but also prolongs the life of the wood. As a wood primer, oil-based paints or alkyd enamels are best.
The procedure is done by hand with a brush in this sequence:
- It is good to dip the brush in the primer, apply it to the workpiece, smear it over the entire area.
- Wait for the paint to be completely absorbed and for the wood to dry. at least two days.
- Apply two more coats of primer, and the second coat can only be covered after the first has dried.
- After that the priming will be finished. You can apply a top coat of lacquer to the wood.
Why you need a metal ring
A washer or simply a metal ring is needed to protect the abrasive from overtightening, because many users tend to screw the stopper tightly for fear the wheel will fly off while working with the tool.
Also, the ring is installed on the disk of the angle grinder, in order to significantly increase the area of the bearing surface. In addition, the washer is designed to ensure that the abrasive does not “stick” to the nut, which simplifies the removal process.

Unusual disc for “angle grinder” on size 100/115
Came across (in the mailing) curious disc for angle grinder, I bought to see what it is 🙂 Why need it, I will not even say. I was just curious what they can do, bought the unusual appearance 🙂 over, when I bought it, it was almost two times cheaper. quite a good price for experiments and reporting here 😉
By the way, pay attention to the picture in the hat. long time looking at it. nothing confusing? :)))) Didn’t notice the gimmick right away, I had trouble photographing it as well. Gotta try it 😉
Took quite a long time and without tracking. Got such a blister. I noticed the chain was sticking out, I thought it was defective and I will have to “fight” with the store. The upper part of the blister has examples of using this “gimmick” to angle grinder, what have the Chinese thought of using it for 😉
As I understand it, for the most part, for making sculptures out of wood, ice, rubber and other soft materials. The package has a maximum rotation speed of 10000-13000, the disc itself. 14000 🙂
The back of the blister, with a warning that work with this disc “life-threatening” 🙂
I unpacked the disk with some unpleasant feeling. the appearance was somehow “not so”.
It turned out I was worried in vain, the device was demountable.) It consists of three parts: two plates and a short chain. They are not fixed to each other in any way, they are held by clamping with the nut of the angle grinder. The blue part is an “extra” part ;), it was used to connect all parts into one piece for transportation.
The dimensions stated in the store The plate chain is sharp in principle, but the sharpening is kind of crooked. If you wish it is possible to sharpen it yourself, it is of course not unimportant.
Putting it all together is quite simple. On the bottom plate we spread a chain (plates, by the way, are identical) On top we lay the second plate, correcting a chain that it would be evenly distributed on a circle. It is worth noting that the inner bore of the plates is smaller than the standard one used on the cutting discs. This is why the lower disc rests on the centering shoulder on the lower washer “just right” Centering is done by turning the nut tightening the disc. At the same time it is not possible to tighten it completely, i.e.к. the thickness of the sandwich is good. Probably makes sense on the bottom plate to increase the size to the “standard” by yourself Cutting depth depends on the design of your angle grinder, I suppose there may be a difference on different “grinders” To work with the obtained devices highly recommend putting on all that is protection. RPM angle grinder is very decent, and if the chain breaks (caught on a nail), the consequences do not puzzle. I would have worn a helmet before the first turn on, too, if I had one handy :)))) You have to tighten nut well, otherwise, if the chain is loose, when you stop/restart it can be displaced from the plates by centrifugal force. I had this happen the very first time, when tightening probably not quite right (evenly) laid the chain in a circle. When properly laid, the top plate falls through a couple of mm and quite tightly holds the chain. In principle, nothing terrible happened, but the feeling was still unpleasant 🙂
In the process of testing, I got bolder and did all the work by weight. it is really quite comfortable to work.
And the results of testing. what I could make up “on the fly”. Since I’m not “ever” a sculptor at all, I limited myself to a few different cuts.
The simple sawing goes “like clockwork”.
you can make a cleft for a thorn or a through hole
Depth of cut
It is possible to make a pick, but it is not very comfortable and productive
If you do the side kerf for tenoning, it is possible to connect the boards with tenons in the manner of floorboards or battens
And another “domestic” use. the manufacture of stakes from the vampires (aspen wood was not handy 🙂 Seriously, sawing not very thick twigs and branches, after pruning the trees is quite comfortable. I use such “wood” of peaches and other fruit trees in the barbecue.
At the time of publication there is no availability at BAnguda, but there are options at Ali. for example this link (cheaper did not come across)
The characteristics of the tool and the quality of the work
Even if you have purchased the most expensive polishing and grinding equipment, it does not mean that the quality of work will be the best. What it’s about? It’s quite simple: to work well, you only need to use dried wood. Raw material is not suitable for this type of work. If you do not take this feature into account, the result may not be the most pleasant. When selecting a wood disc, make sure that the selected raw material complies with the specified requirements and standards.
In some cases it is necessary to carry out scraping work to remove old paint, varnish or fungal growth. Good polishing and sanding tools always work best, provided, however, that the material has been prepared in accordance with the basic technological requirements. You should understand that the polishing and grinding discs for angle grinder are not suitable for primary machining operations, so they need to be equipped with additional abrasive nozzles.
If you choose the right nozzle, you can experience their effectiveness in cases where you need to clean old surfaces, which are covered with several layers of paint. Such a result is very simple to explain: most nozzles are a kind of metal plate on which there is a wire bristle placed closer to the outer circle in a radial or perpendicular to the disk.
