Gasoline in the engine crankcase of a power tiller
Gasoline four-stroke air-cooled engines are widely used on gardening equipment power tillers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, motor pumps, mini-tractors, construction and road-building equipment gasoline generators, vibratory plates, vibrotrambovki.
Before starting the engine, DO read the OPERATOR’S MANUAL. Many buyers, unfortunately, do not do it. That is why the most elementary questions about engine use arise.
ADVICE: READ THE ENGINE MANUAL.
First: what kind of gasoline to use.
We recommend the use of clean, fresh, unleaded A92 octane gasoline. Air-cooled engines are not designed to run with AI95 and AI98 fuel. In the 95-th and 98-th gasoline contains additives, which are destructive to the engine piston system, leading to overheating and damage.
Do not mix oil and petrol. This can lead to engine malfunctions that are not covered by the warranty.
USE FRESH AI-92 GASOLINE WITH A SHELF LIFE OF NOT MORE THAN 30 DAYS.
Second: What oil to fill in the engine crankcase.
Many people consider automotive oil of well-known brands to be the best for use in engines for a power tiller (power tiller, snowmobile, electric generator, motor pump, etc.).д.). This is absolutely not true. The vehicle oils are designed to work in water-cooled engines, not air-cooled engines. The boiling point of automotive oils is lower than that of oils containing special additives for air-cooled engines.
Use SF, SG, SH, SJ, CD or higher. Do not use oil additives. Select oil viscosity based on ambient temperature.
SAE 30 (5°C and up) is recommended for temperatures above 5°C. May be difficult to start if used below 5°C.
10W-30 (-18 to 38°C) is recommended for variable temperatures. This oil is designed for cold-starting but may be more oil-draining at temperatures above 27°C.
Check the oil level more often in higher air temperatures.
Synthetic 5W-30 (-30 to 40°C). Synthetic oil, delivers engine performance across the entire temperature range, plus easy starting and reduced oil consumption.
5W-30 (5°C and below) recommended for winter conditions.
USE ONLY THE OILS INDICATED IN THE ENGINE MANUAL.
Always keep an eye on the oil level. The level should be at the last thread of the filler neck when the engine is horizontal (as shown in the illustration). The fill and drain ports are on the front and rear of the engine.
On lawn mowers, pay attention to the dipstick. marks on the dipstick of a vertical shaft engine.
Different engines have different crankcase volumes. If you have a 4, 5.5, 6.5 or 7L engine.с. If the piston system is overloaded when the engine is first started or when it is cold, pour 600 ml. oil. In 7.5 litre engines.с. fill up to 900 ml. In 8, 9, 11, 13 and 15 hp engines.с. respectively 1.1l.
Third: start the engine.
When starting the engine for the first time or when it is cold, there is increased stress on the piston system. High revs can damage the engine. Therefore, start the engine at 1/3rd of the throttle position. But the running-in period should be at medium rpm.
Fourthly: as the engine runs in.
Air-cooled engines “do not like” idling. Run engine, warm it up for 1-2 mins. and run-in on the engine. During the running-in period try to maintain a load of 50-75% and make sure you take breaks of 20-25 minutes. After a break when the engine has cooled down (15-20 min.) the fuel tank is empty.), it is possible to continue working again. In this mode the engine must run the first 4-5 hours, after which the oil must be necessarily changed. The running-in period is finished.
The main causes of engine breakdowns
REMEMBER. The most common cause of engine damage is improper use.
First cause: fuel cock that is not closed.
When the engine is not running and the fuel cock is open, carburetor overflows and “flooding” of the spark plugs occurs. Gasoline also gets into the engine crankcase. And this will lead to overpressure during engine operation and squeeze out the glands. Then that mixture of petrol and oil gets into the combustion chamber and through the exhaust valve into the muffler. The oil residue will gradually clog up the muffler and the engine will lose traction.
ALWAYS CLOSE THE FUEL TAP AFTER WORK.
Second reason: The engine was overturned in transportation or storage.
Since the engine is a 4-stroke engine, gasoline is poured into the tank, oil into the crankcase and they should not mix. After a turn over, these components are usually mixed in the carburetor. After that, the engine needs to be disassembled and cleaned.
DON’T TURN THE ENGINE UPSIDE DOWN.
And the third reason: Improper engine starting with the recoil starter.
Many four-stroke engine users think that the harder you pull the starter grip, the better the engine will start. That’s not true. The starter grip should be pulled up to the engagement of the cams and then gently, but with a large amplitude pull up. And the engine (if it is in good condition of course) is sure to start.

In spring we bring the machines to the garden. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for a single-axle tractor not to start. The owner must promptly find the cause of the failure and remove the fault.
The single-axle tractor is a functional tool. It is indispensable for homesteading. Attachment equipment allows you to do tillage, mowing, snow removal, cargo transportation, planting and harvesting.
The technique is completed with gasoline or diesel engines. How to start a diesel tractor and gasoline tractor is different. Therefore let’s consider the reasons why a single axle tractor won’t start for each specific type of engine.
Before starting a single-axle tractor, make preparations for the equipment. Make sure all parts are in an assortment, make sure they are securely fastened.
Mechanisms often refuse to work after winter. The machine can not be started if there are any kinks in the harness strings. Storing it in a cool and damp place will cause further damage:
Before starting a new power tiller, check all the connections, clutch cable, reverse and throttle. Cables run smoothly without difficulty. Do not start the machine if there are any clips or kinks in the harness.
At the time of the first start-up the oil level in the crankcase is inspected. Lack of lubrication will damage the piston group. Crankshaft rotates up to 1400 rpm at idle speed. It takes a couple of seconds for the cylinder to bump.
Old oil is a precondition for engine malfunction. With all this, the single-axle tractor smokes snow-white exhaust gases. Compulsory full oil change.
How to eliminate petrol overflow on a power tiller.
It should be taken into account that a single axle tractor starts badly if the volume of oil is insufficient. Look only for this parameter before starting a carburetor and diesel single axle tractor. Some models have low level protection. The sensor prevents the engine from starting and the machine shuts down.
It is necessary to keep in mind that every type of engine needs a certain grade of gasoline. Prepare fuel for a two-stroke motor separately. The fuel mix consists of petrol and oil. Keep the quantity of ingredients in a serious proportion.
Buy gasoline for power tillers at gas stations. The quality of fuel directly affects the service life of machines. No need to start a single-axle tractor on bad gasoline.
Starting a diesel motorblock after purchase you will like it more complicated. That there is air in the fuel system. If you can not start the engine with a long cranking (with starter), it is necessary to bleed air s. For this purpose, the diesel fuel feed tap is opened and the connections along the way of fuel channels are unscrewed. Nozzles are the end point of the flushing procedure.
What to start the gasoline engine, you need to meet a number of requirements. Let us list them all in order:
Fulfillment of the listed criteria guarantees the start of any engine.
Difficulties at start-up indicate the fault of nodes and devices. Furore of repair depends on the correctness of diagnostics. If any defects are detected, the diesel engine block is repaired. Service and small repairs are performed by our own staff. Wrench set, metalwork tool and experienced hands are required.
The whole truth about the failure of the engine LIFAN and similar Chinese engines
On the step of the preparation of fuel consistency are likely subsequent mishaps:
- the air filter is not letting air in;
- clogged tank cap hole;
- the fuel line is clogged;
- The carburetor is broken.
After a series of unsuccessful starts it is useful to unscrew the spark plug. The working part can be flooded with fuel. Dry the part. Next, pump the cylinder through the hole. Screw in the spark plug and start again.
If the spark plug is dry, no fuel is getting into the combustion chamber. Let’s perform a series of steps one by one to restore the accounting supply system:
- drain the old gasoline;
- wash the tank;
- clean dirt from the filter;
- Blow out the fuel hose;
- blow out the carburetor jets;
- Fill the tank with unstained gasoline;
- open faucet;
- Clean the breather hole in the cap.
The engine won’t start if the ignition system is defective. Why does it happen? Sources of failure are usually magneto, high-voltage wire, cap and spark plug. Exterior inspection inspects the cleanliness of parts of the ignition accounting (soft). Dirt and moisture can cause high voltage breakdown. Lack of spark occurs when the cap is in bad contact with the center electrode of the spark plug.
Weak spark shows bad spark plug performance. Need to check the clearance and the condition of the electrodes. Inspect clearance with a feeler gauge. It is usually 0.8 mm. If necessary, it is necessary to remove the soot from the metal parts and the insulator. Change of plug is recommended.
The condition of the piston group components influences the readiness of the engine. They work in harsh conditions. When under load, the rubbing surfaces become warm. Cylinder, piston and rings regulate the principle. compression. Low compression in the cylinder will indicate a change of parts.
Oil in the spark plug pads, ICE 3S FE elimination of the cause! Brown rim on the insulator!
Also check intake and exhaust valves. The saddles should be tight. The muffler is the last point in the path of exhaust gases. On the walls of the muffler evenly deposited combustion products, and the engine turns off. For the normal flow of exhaust gases it is necessary to periodically clean the walls from soot deposits.
Specialists recommend following all manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not overload the unit.
Compliance with all requirements will extend the life of the devices.
Prior to use, the owner must learn all about the instruction manual.
In this topic, we will get acquainted with the troubleshooting of power tillers and cultivators of all brands, Salut. Neva, Zubr, etc.д., and remedy these defects and repair. Most of the problems are peculiar to all types of power tillers, their engines and other components.
It often happens that a single-axle tractor that has been in good working order for a short period of time suddenly loses its power.
What are the dangers of mixing fuel with grease
When gasoline gets into the engine oil, it triggers complex reactions, eventually leading to various breakdowns. It should be added that everything depends on the amount of fuel that ended up in the engine oil. If it is small, the engine will run fine for a little while longer. However, serious malfunctions will still occur. If there is a lot of gasoline in the crankcase, it quickly leads to car damage.
The effects of gasoline in the oil:
- fuel correction factor malfunction. The powertrain may not be able to start;
- Reduced driving speed, the car struggles to reach top speed;
- piston failure may occur;
- Engine failure. This happens when the carburetor, injectors are damaged.
How to determine if there is a malfunction in the car? You need to pay attention to certain signs:
- Increased fuel consumption. Gasoline is wasted quickly due to the fact that some of it flows into the engine to the lubricant;
- Strong knocking, noisy piston system. This is an indication that the fuel treatment is impaired;
- Engine power decreases, it is more difficult to drive the car on a hill;
- The color of the oil changes;
- The coolant level is dropping.
What to do if you notice one of the above signs? Go to the car service immediately.
Changing the oil in your power tiller: how to do it and whether you need to add gasoline to the grease
The right equipment is now available for ground work. It is no longer necessary to do everything by hand, since suitable tools are available. It is extremely convenient, especially when there is a need to cultivate a large area at once. Among the abundance of auxiliary devices the following ones deserve special attention. In this case it is necessary to get acquainted with the manual of the popular model of the motor block Neva MB 2.

Reanimating a power tiller after winter and the most common failures of power tillers.
Tried to start a single axle tractor after winter, but the single axle tractor would not start. How to start a single-axle tractor, if it does not start you can at the beginning only speculate, because the reasons may be several:
In a motor with injectors, gasoline smell coming from the dipstick indicates broken injectors, ignition system. In the 1st case, it is about the fact that the injectors lose proper tightness. After the engine is turned off, the fuel, due to residual pressure, seeps into the manifold, and from there penetrates into the cylinder block. The piston rings serve as a barrier on the way to the crankcase, but if they are worn, the gasoline will still get there.
Smells like gasoline also when the ignition system is malfunctioning. If the spark plug is broken, there is no fuel ignition in the cylinder block, so it is just wasted. To fix the problem you must remove the fuel rail, one by one check the tightness of all injectors by pressurizing them with kerosene. Leaking parts and broken plugs need to be replaced with other parts.
Any car owner can determine if there is gasoline in the oil during a standard procedure in the morning before starting the engine. You can do it by one of the following methods.
Check the smell
The easiest way to check that you know if there is gasoline in the oil is to smell the oil when you check the level with the dipstick or when you unscrew the cap of the oil-filler neck. If your engine oil smells like gasoline it should alert you and make you do some other checks. Note that the oil may not smell like gasoline, but like acetone. It depends on the quality of gasoline and oil used, the condition of the lubricant and other reasons.
Often, as the oil changes its smell, it becomes more liquid, that is, it begins to drip easily from the dipstick. This is also something to pay attention to, especially if the oil has been in it for a long time, for example, the mileage is already over the middle of its service life. So in addition to smelling oil, do a drip test to determine the quality of the oil.
So, to do it, just drop a few grams of the test lubricant on an ordinary paper. You won’t get an instant answer, because you have to leave it in a warm place for at least a couple of hours (12 hours is better). But having analyzed the zones of spreading (at the edges of the circle there will be a sector with a yellowish or reddish tint), it is very likely that the gasoline will get into the oil or not.
And in order to reduce to zero the fallacy of suspicion, it is worth more attentive to the signs considered above and check for combustion.
Burning Engine Oil
Many experienced motorists, in order to find out if gasoline is in the oil, suggest simply lighting the lubricant on fire. Inexperienced drivers, who have never encountered such a problem, often mistakenly try to simply burn the oil directly on the dipstick. Such an approach will not give a result, unless in the oil is already a critical part of gasoline, but it is rare, and it will be visible on the other, obvious, signs.
In fact, it is necessary to ignite the oil heated in the test tube. So, for this you need to take a glass tube with a narrow neck and pour a small amount of oil into it. If the tube has a flat bottom, it is better to heat it on an electric stove. If the test tube has a rounded bottom, then you can take it to the laboratory tongs and heat it on an open fire source (kitchen stove, candle, dry alcohol, etc.). Note that during the process of heating the neck (upper part) of the tube should be sealed with a lid so that gasoline does not evaporate in the process of heating.
The ignition temperature of engine oil vapor is much higher than that of gasoline vapor, so oil vapor will not burn in the normal state. Further, after a certain amount of time, when the test samples are sufficiently heated, it is necessary to open the lid of the test tube and quickly bring source of open fire (lighter, match). If the escaping vapors do not catch fire, then most likely there is no or negligible amount of gasoline in the oil. Accordingly, if the presence of gasoline is serious, a tongue of flame will appear at the neck of the test tube. In that case it will be the result of combustion of gasoline vapors coming from the lubricating liquid in the test tube.
When you perform the described tests, follow the safety rules and fire safety rules.
How it works The fuel pump draws fuel from the tank through the screen and forces it into the air-fuel mixer. Before or after the pump, the fuel passes through the fine fuel filter. Purified air is sucked in through the air filter.
To determine whether there is diesel fuel in the oil, the combustion temperature is tested in the laboratory. The flash point of fresh engine oil is 200 degrees. After 2 to 3,000 km. ignited as early as 190 degrees, and if a fairly large amount of diesel fuel was in it, it ignites at 110 degrees.
How does the petrol you fill with make the cylinders work?? The fuel system has a pump which takes the fuel from the tank and mixes it with the air in the correct proportions so that the fuel-air mixture can flow into the cylinders.
How to know if there is gasoline in the oil (signs)
- The oil smells like petrol.
- The oil level gradually rises, if it has not been refilled in the crankcase.
- Increase in fuel (gasoline) consumption in parallel with the increase in the oil level.
- Oil becomes more fluid.
- Reduced oil pressure.
- Difficult to start the engine when it is “hot.
The smell of gasoline coming from the dipstick in the injector engine testifies about the malfunction of injectors, ignition system. In the 1st case it means that the injectors loose proper tightness. After the engine is switched off, the fuel, due to residual pressure, seeps into the manifold, and from there penetrates into the cylinder block. Piston rings serve as a barrier on the way to the crankcase, but if they are worn, the gasoline will still get there.
Gasoline smells also at faulty ignition system. If the spark plug is broken, in the cylinder block the fuel does not flare up, i.e. it is wasted for nothing. To eliminate the problem you must remove the fuel rail, one by one check the tightness of all injectors by pressurizing them with kerosene. Leaking parts and broken plugs should be replaced with other parts.
