Patriot grass trimmers are a shining demonstration of American garden tool manufacturing achievements
A huge role on the performance and durability of the gasoline trimmer for grass plays oil, which protects the parts of the cylinder-piston group from rapid wear and tear.
Proper service is essential to keep your lawnmower working reliably. Nowadays, it is customary to distinguish between the two main types of engine according to the number of working strokes:
How two and four-stroke engines work
- Two-stroke engines, where oil is added directly to the fuel tank;
- Four-stroke engines with a separate oil reservoir. An exception in this category is the STIHL 4-MIX motor, which runs on a petrol-oil mixture but has four strokes.
Nevertheless, most of the trimmers on our market are equipped with power units running on the mixture pre-filled in the fuel tank.
Lubrication system for two and four-stroke engines
The four-stroke engines are equipped with separate systems for lubrication and air-fuel mixture preparation.
That’s why the pump pumps oil directly to the rubbing surfaces, that is, the crankshaft bearing and the point of contact of the piston with the cylinder walls.
This is done by placing the lubricant in a reservoir where it flows through ducts to the friction points.
In addition, through the crankshaft and connecting rod the oil reaches the piston and washes it, reducing the temperature and lubricating the cylinder walls.
Two-stroke engines don’t have a separate lubrication system, but they do have a crankshaft bearing which requires a reduction in friction.

In such power units, the fuel-air mixture enters first into the crankcase, where the crankshaft bearing is located, and then under the action of depression passes by the piston, cooling it and lubricating the cylinder walls, it enters the combustion chamber.
However, gasoline has no lubricating properties, so such units are fueled with a gasoline mixture, that is, liquid fuel, in which a special oil is added.
The efficiency of lubrication with fuel mixture is much lower than with engine oil, so the service life of two-stroke motor bearing, and hence the crankshaft and connecting rod, is much lower than the same part of the four-stroke engine.
Besides, the two-stroke oil system has special requirements to the oil, because it has to burn as much as possible in the cylinder and to form a minimum of toxic substances.
Review of internal combustion engine oils
Among the manufacturers producing the best two-stroke oils, we can say with certainty that the two leaders are Husqvarna and STIHL. Companies produce not only conventional mineral oils, but also synthetic lubricants designed for 2-stroke engines, working in harsh conditions.
It is a Swedish manufacturer, which includes several well-known brands, including Partner (Partner), known for its garden equipment for semi-professional and professional use. Husqvarna produces not only machinery, but also high quality lubricants used in almost all brands of power tools.
The photo below shows 2-stroke Husqvarna HP oil, which has in its composition special additives that can compensate for the poor quality fuel, which is not uncommon in our country. After all, not always the octane number of gasoline, bought at the gas station, corresponds to the declared.
The grease is green in color and contains a semi-synthetic base. Can be filled both in 10-litre and one-litre containers. The grease is diluted in the standard ratio of 1:50 (20 g per 1 liter of petrol). But if the engine is not yet running in or if work in cold weather is expected, the ratio can be increased to 1:40.
The lubricant has been specially developed for engines in STIHL machines. It is mineral-based, has good cleaning and lubricating properties and is suitable for use at ambient temperatures above 5 °C.10°С.
The bottle has a special dispenser that makes mixing of the fuel mix possible without the need for additional measuring cups.
The grease is red in color and may be stored up to 4 years in a sealed container. The latter can have different capacities, both large and small (for a single fill). For example, a 20-gram bottle is available, the contents of which can be added to 1 liter of petrol. This is a very good option for chainsaw owners who use them occasionally. Important: A mixture of gasoline and this oil should not be stored for more than 1 month, because it will already lose its lubricating properties during this time.
STIHL HP Ultra
The oil belongs to the highest category. It is a fully synthetic, green-coloured, high-performance lubricant with no carbon build-up thanks to its salt-free additives.
The oil has been specially developed for long-term, high-loaded engines exposed to low ambient temperatures.25°С. This lubricant is not harmful to the environment. If spilt on the ground, it will decompose to 80 percent in 21 days. The grease is packaged in bottles of 100 ml and 1 liter.
How much oil to pour per liter to get a quality gasoline mixture? There seems to be nothing complicated about mixing two substances. Preparation of the mixture is often complicated by the fact that different sources give different information. For example, the manual specifies the ratio of 1 to 40, on the fuel tank of the weed trimmer 1 to 25, and on the oil canister 1 to 50.
Most experts believe that you should mix according to the instructions on the oil package.
There are a number of requirements for how to dilute. Do Not Add Too Much Oil. This leads to a lower ignition performance. The engine’s efficiency will be devalued, and the engine life will be reduced overall. If the petrol blend is oversaturated with oil, soot deposits will form on the inner surface of the engine walls (cylinder ventilation windows). This can lead to burrs on the piston.
Neither oil starvation nor excessive lubricant in a gasoline base is a good basis for long engine life. For trouble-free continuous operation, the same amount of ingredients is necessary. The dilution is best done with the same measuring tools to eliminate unnecessary errors.
How to calculate, say, how much oil to pour on 1 liter of gasoline at the desired ratio of 1 to 50? To do it, let’s convert the volume of petrol into milliliters 1 liter=1000 ml. Accordingly, to reach the ratio of 1 to 50 thousand divided by fifty. You only need 20 grams of oil per liter of gasoline. Some people measure oil with a 20cc syringe, but for such purposes there is a special measuring spoon, which sometimes comes with oil from some manufacturers.
To help you calculate the oil to gasoline ratio, here’s the table: https://cmetnik.ru/oil/
Preparation of fuel mixture
To obtain a fuel mixture, engine oil is mixed with petrol in certain proportions. They are listed in the instruction manual. For example, mineral lubricants are mixed with gasoline at a ratio of 1 to 35, and synthetic. 1 to 50.
- pour the exact amount of petrol into the canister;
- add required volume of oil using dispenser;
- close the container with the lid;
- mix the composition by shaking the liquid.
the prepared fuel mixture is simply poured inside the fuel tank, using a watering can for convenience.
The proportions of oil and petrol in the fuel mix are given in the table below. It allows you to quickly determine the volumes of materials to be mixed.
The mixture of petrol and oil can be stored in polypropylene or metal containers for up to two weeks. Do not store the composition in polyethylene bottles. The reason is that gasoline reacts with the container material, and the resulting products get into the work mixture. Because of this, more soot will be generated during combustion of the compound.
It is allowed to refuel only when the engine is almost completely cooled down. You would not want to overfill the tank. there must be enough room for the thermal expansion of the fuel.
It is necessary to follow the rules of fire and personal safety, carrying out work on preparation and pouring of working composition away from sources of fire.
What to use as a lubricant?
Some owners of electric trimmers believe that this question is one of the most important, because the wrong choice of lubricant will reduce its effectiveness, which will lead to accelerated wear of the rubbing surfaces, that is to get a paradoxical situation. trimmer for grass seems to be lubricated in time, but the wear parts the same, as in the absence of its.
In fact everything is not so terrible, because there are no big loads on a shaft or in gearbox, the maximum engine power does not exceed 3 kW, and a huge speed of the shaft (7-10 thousand rpm) greatly reduces the torque.
Therefore, any semi-liquid lithium grease will do, up to and including mixing “Lithol” or “SchRUS” with mineral engine oil of minimum viscosity in approximately equal proportions.
Products with molybdenum additive give the best results, since while maintaining oil viscosity it increases its extreme pressure properties. Theoretically, it is even possible to fill a gearbox with a mixture of solidol, any mineral engine oil and an extreme pressure additive molybdenum, the main thing is that its viscosity should be similar to non-fluid but not like a thick sour cream.
To lubricate the shaft the best is “Nigrol”, it’s also transmission oil TEP-15 with a small (5-10%) addition of “CROWN” and any molybdenum additive. “Nigrol is very sticky and after 2 or 3 hubs, there is still enough grease on the shaft to lubricate the next hub, whereas the other greases are only good for 2 hubs at the most.
You can use any grease, for example, for the gears of bolsters or gasoline trimmers, but despite the markedly higher cost, they have no advantages over homemade compositions.
Rules of Usage
Lubricant application for the 4-stroke model is not difficult. you just need to fill the special tank and constantly monitor its level. Another thing. 2-stroke copies. They require pre-mixed oil with gasoline, and only then pour into the lawnmower, but in no case add it separately in the gas tank. otherwise the grass trimmer motor will not receive effective lubrication and will break.
When diluting, the proportions must be strictly observed. In this case, the ratio of components is governed by the type of oil, conditions and manufacturer’s recommendations. For example, mineral oil is characterized by mixing in values of 1:25. 1:35, and for synthetic oil. from 1:50 to 1:80. Dilution should be carried out in a separate container by adding oil to the required amount of fuel. And only after the ingredients are completely mixed, is the mixture poured into the gas tank.
Oil for brushcutters. how to choose, in what proportions to dilute
Many of you have gasoline tools in the household, for example, in a private home can not do without a chainsaw. You know, to prepare wood for the winter, comes in handy at construction and repair, and in general, it is a very useful tool. If your country house also has a decent-sized plot, then the struggle with the grass just need a trimmer for grass or lawn mower, which also run on gasoline.
Of course you can buy them as well, but not everyone likes to pull a 30 m extension cord to mow a place overgrown with grass up to his knees. That’s why most people go for gasoline-powered tools. As you know, it is necessary to add to gasoline a special oil for two-stroke engines. Here we will talk about it, because it is a very important aspect, if you do not add oil and add in the wrong proportions, then your engine very quickly “cracks” and your way will lie in the service center. To avoid all this trouble, add only quality oil and in the right proportions.
The most popular for chainsaws, brush cutters and trimmers are products of the famous company STIHL. It is sold in two packages. 1 liter and 100 ml. For those who work a lot, fit a liter bottle, and “once to saw” is quite enough a small bottle. A 1 liter container costs 250 and a 10 ml container costs 60. If you buy a big one, the savings are obvious.
You add STIHL oil to petrol in 1:50 ratio, which means you add 100 ml for 5 liters of petrol. As you can see, a small bottle is great for getting 5 liters of gasoline mixture to fuel a chainsaw or grass trimmer. The large bottle has special markings on the side that tell you how much oil you have poured out of the bottle. If you buy a big 1 liter bottle, you should buy a 20ml syringe at the drugstore. Very convenient. 1 syringe of oil for 1 liter of gasoline.
We recommend that you use a brand oil for your machine, because it’s perfect because it’s been developed and tested for STIHL power tools. I note that Stihl has its own brands, such as VIKING (popular models of gasoline trimmers). Use Stihl oil for those as well and you won’t have any problems at all.
If you have led more gasoline mixture than you can use, then it is best to store the rest in a metal canister or in a glass container. Never store the mixture in a plastic bottle. Of course, if you use up the leftovers in a couple of days, you can pour the rest of the mixture into a plastic half bottle, but if the mixture will be stored for a long time, then either a canister or a glass container. The thing is that the gasoline mixture corrodes the plastic bottle, microscopic precipitations of plastic appear in the mixture and it is very bad for the engine. Keep that in mind if you want your tool to run long and trouble free.
The second most popular oil brand is unbelievable Hooksvarna. Of course if you think about it that way, more people use STIHL chain saws, at least all my friends and their friends use them in their work.
But there are some who dote on Husqvarna tools and I understand them, because I personally do not see much difference between Husqvarna and Stihl, both tools are of very high quality. But I have seen the happy owners of chainsaws Husqvarna. they say the saws are great. I have not cut my own saws but I always listen to what people say. So, if you have a Husqvarna gasoline tool, it would be better to use a special brand oil for it. Although nothing bad will happen if you dilute the gasoline with Stihl. But since the manufacturer recommends to use only its products, we will do that.
You can find liter capacities on sale. Black stylish bottle with the same markings on the side as Stihl has (to know how much oil has been poured out of the bottle). Seems to me absolutely identical quality. It’s 270, a little bit more expensive.
Both are good quality oils, cost about the same, each diluted 1:50. So feel free to buy any oil, of course, better to buy the oil of that brand which you have a tool. then everything will be perfect, just like the manufacturer advises. Have a nice sawing, mowing, and let your power tool work for a long time without damage.
Chainsaw Basics: Fuel and Oil
BRIGGS STRATTON SAE-30 0.6 л
This oil is good for petrol generators, trimmers, sprayers and other garden and construction equipment with 4-stroke engines. The SAE 30 viscosity grade can be used at temperatures starting from 5 degrees, so you can even mow tall grass in the late fall. The mineral base is equipped with a large number of additives that prevent oxidation of the metal. Even if you pour bad gasoline, the power plant will not be damaged. The fast-flowing grease is excellent in all corners of the engine and protects the components from premature wear and tear. The product is made in the Netherlands, which gives buyers additional quality assurance. Many gardening equipment repairmen recommend this grease in the trimmer‘s crankcase.
The oil has a remarkable shelf life of 10 years. The storage temperature can reach 40 degrees, so there is no need to set aside a separate cool place for it. It has the highest time-to-use ratio of all competitors and allows you to buy large quantities at once if you have several trimmers or if you have found a good price.
