Complete disassembly of the brushcutter gearbox to remove wear and tear and change lubricant
How to repair the gearbox of a brushcutter with grease? Whatever the brushcutter brand, the second most important component after the engine is the reduction unit, which consists of two helical gears, the smaller of which is the driving one and the larger of which is the driven one.
The gearing that rotates in the bearings is contained in a housing that consists of two symmetrical halves and is bolted together. The drive pinion receives rotation from the motor through the rod, which ends with splines (usually 7 or 9), the idler transmits the rotation to the spindle, which serves for attaching the working body. a reel with a fishing line, ropes or cutting disc. Spindle-side gear bearings are sealed to protect bearings and grease from contamination. there is a bolt on the housing for replenishing it, which can be used to add grease while the tool is in use.
Lubricating the gears on your brushcutter gears on a regular basis is so important that it is worth talking about separately. If you exclude work with cutting discs, when it clings to a stone or a curb and sends a counter shock impulse to the reducer, which leads to tooth breakage of the driven gear, parts of which gradually spoil all meshing, lubrication can postpone repair of this important unit and prolong the service life of several times.
First you need to disassemble the bar. In a conventional chain saw, it is enough to disconnect it from the upper and lower gears.
If the grass mower has a collapsible rod, consisting of two parts, it is even easier. Only the centering coupling needs to be removed and the halves apart.
If the grasshopper has already been working, then when inspecting the shaft, or shafts in the case of the collapsible rod, you may notice scuffs from the alignment bushings. These are the places that need to be lubricated.
Put a small amount of grease on a cloth or your fingers and coat the shaft without interruption. It is not applied in a thick layer, but everywhere. You need to pay special attention to the splines, because they are under the highest load, especially when the grass mower blade hits rocks and other objects.
The lubricated shaft is inserted back into the tripod with light scrolling. This allows some of the excess grease to remain on the centering sleeves, where it should be. Rotating it will also help the splines get into their seats on the gearboxes.
If a straight mower with a non-disassembled boom is being serviced, it is simply reattached to the gears. In the case of the two-piece boom, the short shafts are each inserted into their own halves. After that, the parts of the boom are docked in the center. If their splines are not caught, you can simply turn the lower gearbox by hand. Next, the docked rod is clamped back together with the coupling.
If you use the mower infrequently, this maintenance should be done every season. Gearbox grease used can withstand high temperatures, preventing oil drips when the Grasshopper is in operation for long periods of time. The same compound can also be used to lubricate the gearboxes. It can be pressed into them with a syringe if the tube does not have a spout. Gearboxes are lubricated more frequently than shafts. Manufacturers usually recommend doing this every 5 moto-hours.
Take a syringe, temporarily remove the piston. Put grease in the cylinder. Usually the amount is 5-10 grams (for more exact amount see your brushcutter manual).
Don’t be lazy to spend a minute or two after buying your brushcutter and before the mowing season to grease this important assembly. And your tool will always be ready to work at any time and will last for many, many years.
Tools and materials needed
You need the following tools and materials for gearbox maintenance:
Hexagonal key for opening the oil hole in the gearbox
This kind of wrench is usually supplied with your brushcutter or trimmer.
The next tool is an ordinary 10 ml medical syringe. This is how you get the grease into the gearbox.
We recommend that you use oil that comes from the brushcutter manufacturer. As a last resort, you can use any grease to lubricate the rotating mechanisms, such as Lithol 24.
Action Open the gearbox
To gain access to the gearbox, the gearbox must be opened. This is quite easy to do. unscrew the gearbox bolt with an Allen key. All brushcutters have this bolt in the same place. near the tool.
Action Filling the syringe with oil
Diameter of grease tube does not match that of the gearbox
To get the grease into the housing without any problem, you should use the grease gun.
Then fill the syringe with grease from the tube.
Then put the piston back in the syringe. Syringe ready for greasing the gearbox.
Action Filling the gearbox with grease
Syringe is inserted into the reducer bore
First put the syringe into the opening on the gearbox.
Squeeze a little grease into the reducer and turn it about a quarter turn
Then squirt some oil into the housing and turn it about a quarter turn.
When all the grease is squeezed out, the process is complete
The grease is filled in small portions. After each filling, turn the gearbox by 1/3 to 1/4 revolution. It is advisable to choose the lubricant quantity for each filling so that the gearbox makes a full revolution during lubrication.
Action Sealing the Geareducer
After the gearbox has been filled with grease, screw in the gearbox bolt and clamp it well.

What happens if you do not lubricate in time?
If you mow grass with a trimmer whose rubbing parts have not been lubricated, the following will happen:
- The shaft will break the bushings, so there will be a strong vibration and it will be harder to hold the machine in your hands;
- the gearbox will start to warm up, and the surface of the gears will wear out, metal dust gets into the crankcase, so laying new grease will no longer work, because it will act like an abrasive paste, accelerating the wear;
- over time, the gearbox will stop working and the knife or spool will not rotate when the motor is on.
What’s the right way to lubricate a lawnmower gearbox
The first thing to do is to remove the gearbox from the boom. The detailed assembly-disassembly process can be seen in the video at the end of the article. Unscrew the bolts from the gearbox housing.
Take the CVT and squeeze it into the hole designed for the gearbox lubrication, which is located in the housing.
It is extremely important to fill the gearbox with grease completely, to the point, so to speak. This prevents the formation of air s.
After oiling reassemble in reverse order. Screw the bolts in place, and then mount the gearbox to the boom. That is all there is to it. The main thing is not to spare grease.
Many will say that you can not use so much grease, that it will lead to various problems in the work of the lawnmower. But in fact, everything is much simpler, and there is no reason to panic.
At high speeds (around 6000-6500 rpm) the trimmer line.) the excess grease is squeezed out of the gearbox through the bearings and through the splines into the shaft. And that leaves just enough grease to get the job done.
For details on how to lubricate the gear reducer of the lawnmower, you can watch the video below. Tips shared by the author of the YouTube channel “repair Nick TV”.
Removing and lubricating the lower mower shaft
To remove the shaft from the lower part of the boom, first remove the reel gearbox.
- Unscrew central retaining screw completely. On the back side of the lower clamping screw unscrew the nut and unscrew the screw completely to disconnect the reel gearbox from the protective cover.
- Loosen the upper clamping screw and remove the lower part of the rod from the reel gear housing. Removing the lower shaft from the gearbox side of the boom.
- Clean the shaft from dirt and lubricate it with grease “Shruz-4” or “Lithol-24”, not forgetting to clean and lubricate the coupling (bushing) with the splines in the gearbox.
- We place the shaft in the shaft, and the rod in the lower gear of the lawnmower and align the hole on the boom with the hole for the central screw. Screw in the central screw. Then we tighten the lower screw, fix the lower part of the boom in the gear housing with the upper and lower screws and tighten the nut on the reverse side of the lower screw.
- Add 20-30 ml of grease to the reel gearbox through the hole covered by the screw in the photo on the right.
Servicing a petrol grass trimmer
Most brushcutters and trimmers have a flexible shaft. Its condition must be checked at least once per 50 working hours. To perform this operation, you need to remove the boom tip, pull out the shaft and inspect it, then lubricate.
For the care of the shaft, inexpensive materials are suitable, it is more difficult to find them for the grass trimmer gear. What to lubricate this mechanism with. depends on the company-manufacturer of the tool. It is best to use materials that contain molybdenum disulfide. The latter ensures smoothing and filling of cracks on the working surface, so it is especially valuable among users.
Important: the use of large amounts of grease with high density leads to overheating of the mechanism, increased friction of working pairs and fuel consumption. The choice of material and preventive care must therefore be made in good time.
How to use a chainsaw correctly?
The only way to extend the life of the grass trimmer is to use it properly. Unfortunately, some manufacturers of chain saws are not interested in the long life of their products, that’s why some rules that help to conserve the life of the machine are not included in the manual of the chain saw.
For this reason, we recommend that you carefully follow all the recommendations of this article, even if they are not in the operating manual, because we have made recommendations based on:
Maintaining brushless drill- Gearbox Grease lubrication
- the operating experience of many owners of such devices, which they have shared on the pages of various forums;
- Advice from brushcutter repairers;
- recommendations from the manuals of the most expensive and quality brands of trimmers.
Since grass trimmer operation involves not only mowing the grass, but also many other activities, we have divided it into the following topics:
- Running-in of the engine.
- RPM selection.
- Direction of mowing.
- The choice of clothing and protective gear.
- Safety precautions.
- Transportation and storage.
Even though the engine of a newly purchased grass trimmer is running in and you can immediately start mowing, avoid maximum speed for the first 3-5 hours, because the final lapping of the cylinder and piston group parts takes place.
If you allow the motor to reach maximum RPM, there is a high probability of scoring on the cylinder walls, and this will lead to a sharp drop in motor efficiency, as well as greatly reduce its resource.
Maximum engine torque comes at 2/3 of maximum engine rpm and the most power comes at 3/4 of maximum engine rpm. Therefore, the grass trimmer mows grass most effectively in this range.
Maximum rpm will reduce your power, that’s why take into account the sound the grass trimmer makes when you cut the grass, and judge the rpm by this parameter.
If the load turns out to be too high and the shaft speed of the power unit decreases, add gas with the appropriate key on the operating handle.
As soon as the load is reduced and the RPM increases, press the throttle less to return the RPM to the optimum value.
If you have never used a brushcutter before, before the break-in period you should only mow low and light vegetation that can be easily handled with a line trimmer head. After the running-in period, the engine will cease to be afraid of maximum revolutions, and you will have enough skill to control the motor by ear.
Do not run the engine too long at idle speed, because that reduces the lubrication of the crankshaft bearing, which can cause it to overheat and seize.
When operating your brushcutter at full cutting power, move it so that it runs counter to the direction of rotation of the cutting attachment.
Check the Snowblower Gearbox for Grease
The blade or disc will then push the machine away from any obstacles, so the grass trimmer will not jump out of your hands.
In addition, this movement of the blade or head throws the grass in front of you, so you will better feel the resistance of mowing the grass, and thus avoid too rapid movement and caused by it:
For most trimmers the correct direction of cutting is from right to left. If you go in the opposite direction the grass trimmer continues to cut the grass, so there is an increased chance of backfiring, which can cause the machine to jerk violently. Therefore, try to cut less grass when you move to the opposite side to reduce the load on the machine and the chance of kickback.
Choosing the direction of mowing in maximum vegetation capture mode is especially important when mowing:
Also, when trimming trees, try not to lift the cutting tool too much, and do not turn it perpendicular, because this can cause the carburetor to malfunction.
This requirement does not apply only to brush trimmers, whose carburetors work equally well in any position.
Selection of clothing and protective equipment
The grass trimmer is a high-risk device, so it is necessary to properly select clothing and protective equipment to work with it.
When going to mow the grass, wear only clothes without any straps and fringes, which can get caught in the rotating cutting tool.
If you wear shoes with laces, take measures so that they do not come undone. If you have long hair, limit its movement by wearing a hat or tying it up with something. Be sure to wear safety glasses or face shield, because there is a chance that the cuttings will fly to the wrong place and hit you in the eye.
