The right way to cut a tree. Checking the chain

Pruning trees: 7 rules for crown formation

Tree pruning consists of pruning the crown for health or decorative purposes. Thanks to the procedure reduces the likelihood of falling plants, improves their rooting ability, there is a comprehensive recovery of the wood.

It is advisable to prune plants every year. The best time for this is early spring or late fall, when the sap movement is minimal. Conifers are much less likely to need trimming.

Timely crowning helps to save a big part of the healthy crown

The cutting places should be straight. Do not treat them with garden varnish or other substances to prevent rotting.

  • Preventive. To remove dry, damaged or weakened parts of the plant. Conducted when there is a danger of them falling on buildings, vehicles, or people. Branches obstructing traffic, obstructing view, overhanging something are cut down.
  • Crown formation. Implies thinning the branches to give a well-groomed appearance, a particular form, activation of growth.
  • Sanitary. Conducted to improve the health of the plant, reducing the risk of disease. Remove branches, stumps, diseased leaves and twigs to get more light, air.
  • When transplanting. For big plants to take root. The power of the tree goes to rooting, not to feed the big crown.
  • Topping. removing the crown completely. Used most often for poplars and lime trees.

The latter kind of pruning is not recommended by arborists, but in neglected diseases it is necessary.

General rules and instructions on pruning

In order for the garden to develop and bear fruit, apply these types of pruning in the spring:

  • shaping in order to create a crown of the right size, restoring proper light and ventilation;
  • Sanitary, to protect against diseases and to prevent thickening of the crown;
  • rejuvenating to restore the balance between growth and fruiting of the old tree;
  • Restorative pruning, which is necessary to renew the crown and restore the ability to bear fruit.

Don’t stop at one type of pruning. It is better to carry out a combined pruning of trees, useful for a fruiting orchard.

Experienced gardeners use hand and power tools to prune branches. Prepare such tools for work:

Stock up on garden varnish, oil paint, to cover the cuts on the tree. Such an operation prevents the entry of bacteria and viruses under the bark of the fruit tree, stopping the sap movement.

Here are instructions for pruning a fruit tree in spring:

  • Cut the dry shoots back completely to a live area.
  • Trim the top shoot, remove the three goosefoots that grow at the end of the branch.
  • Shorten side shoots by trimming them above the eyes.
  • Remove growth on the trunk and from the root, wolves that grow on the skeletal branches.
  • Cut back any shoots that point toward the inside of the crown.
  • Thin out the crown by leaving 3-4 main branches, one of which is a continuation of the trunk.
  • Remove any crossed shoots.
  • Remove branches with sharp angles coming off and looking downward.
  • Leave perennial branches longer than others, and remove annual branches or leave them to rejuvenate the crown.
  • Treat cuts with garden varnish, and paint over large cuts with oil paint.

Nikolay Kurdyumov. Author of “Proper Pruning. How to form the crown of fruit-trees without violence to nature” advises to carry out pruning of branches at the end of February to weaken too strong fruit-tree branches. Break it at its base. The same procedure is done with branches which do not develop lower buds, but then the branch is broken above them.

Pruning and cutting technique

There are two types of pruning: tierless and sparse.

Tierless technique

In the first method branches are cut from the top of the shoots. Shortening it by 1/5 is equal to weak pruning. When half the branch length is shortened, this is called severe pruning.

The tierless pruning plan will result in stronger shoot growth and thicker branches. The buds below the cut will develop better.

Thin-tree technology

  • Even before a tree is planted, its lower branches are properly shaped.
  • At the time of planting, the branches of the young tree are cut by 30 percent. This promotes the growth of the sapling.
  • In the second year, this action is skipped. The following year begin to shape the crown.
  • Maintain the right length of the branches and a distance of at least 10 cm between opposing branches.
  • The longest branches are left on the lower tier. On all subsequent tiers they are made shorter.

Pruning is necessary in order to prevent the crown from getting too dense and to ensure light permeability. In addition, the nutrients and water are distributed correctly throughout the tree, and this ensures good growth.

Felling and sawing techniques

So, let’s understand how to cut down a tree with a chainsaw correctly?

Preparatory work

Before starting work on the tree, all working factors must be evaluated:

Determine in which direction the tree should be felled;

Tip: To correctly fell the tree you must take the axe in your hand and hold it parallel to the tree with your outstretched hand. Now move in this position toward the fall until the tree is the visual size of your axe. You are now standing on the place where the top will lie. If there are no obstacles in your way then you have chosen the right side of the fall. And, if there were still obstacles, try to remove them, or choose a different angle of incidence.

Safety rules and preparation for sawing

Before you start cutting a tree, the first thing you must do is assess the safety of yourself and others. Having roughly calculated the height of the tree and the trajectory of its fall, estimate how close to this place are the power lines, roads, whether there are any nearby buildings.

How do I cut down a tree on my property?

Before the actual process of sawing, put on a helmet. this headgear can protect you from injury in unforeseen cases. In addition, it is best to wear gloves, tight shoes to prevent splinters, and non-slip shoes. It is best to choose a day when it is calm and nice weather so that the forces of nature do not interfere with your work.

After the assessment step, you need to determine the height of the tree, at least approximately, the slope of the tree, if any. Within a radius of two values of the height it is necessary to remove everything that can be damaged when felling the tree. After that it is best to cut down the big, lush branches of the tree. they can be reached with a ladder.

How to cut a tree with a chainsaw

After the saw has cut the trunk the pushing down by the hand or by a pole with the stop at the height of 300-400 cm is done. To prevent the logs from cracking, clean off the branches as quickly as possible, then crosscut the logs and put them in storage.

To saw a trunk by hand, you need to follow certain rules:

  • The longer the hand saw blade, the more it springs, which can make it much harder to cut through hardwood, including ash, maple and oak;
  • Determine the length of the hacksaw blade should be in accordance with the rule, which states that the length of the saw should be a couple of times the diameter of the trunk;
  • The teeth of a too short hacksaw will jam inside the wood, and uncomfortable work will cause rapid fatigue.

As a rule, the manual method is used to cut down young and not very tall trees.

Sawing branches and trunks

Sawing branches

Start sawing branches from the bottom of the overlying tree. First make the cut at the bottom, then fillet the top. Do not cut big branches right at the base, but a little farther away. And then, remove the limb separately.

Sawing down the trunk

The trunk must be sawed as follows:

  • Use your chain saw to cut half of the tree up;
  • Without taking the saw out, insert the wedge and drive it in well with the axe (this way you avoid clamping the saw between the halves of the trunk);
  • Saw all the way through.

If a chainsaw tire does get stuck in a tree, do not try to pull it out. Stop the engine and push the trunk on both sides of the cut from below until the saw comes out.

About safety rules

Both an experienced farmer and especially a beginner need to know the rules of safe work when cutting down trees.

Let’s outline the main points of safe felling and sawing:

  • When working in the garden (the forest), and even with a saw on gasoline, smoking is categorically inadmissible. Dry trees gasoline can save you from the need to saw anything, because there will be nothing to saw. only a pile of ashes!
  • Before you go to work, make sure you are not in the way. It’s like a war. no women, children or animals!
  • Hold the tool firmly with both hands. If you drop the chainsaw, you can be left not only without a tree, but also without limbs!
  • Do not saw the tree upright with the edge of the saw, it could have a kickback effect and the saw could kick right back at you.
  • Wear work gloves and clothing, protect your face from chips and dust. To make it easier to work, put on special soundproof headphones, otherwise the buzzing of the chainsaw will be remembered for a long time.
  • Use the trunk of the tree as a shield and start cutting from the back.
  • Take a good look at the technical points and make a work plan for yourself. Don’t get complacent, even if you are very experienced. But according to statistics, experienced chain saw operators are the ones who get hurt the most.

The nuances of pruning

There are many nuances and subtleties in pruning techniques for fruit trees. For example:

  • Only use sharp and sterile tools;
  • Shoots and branches can be cut per bud, per ring and per side shoot;
  • You need to follow the law of branch cohesion and remove competing shoots;
  • Radical pruning causes a rapid growth of shoots and will give you a big problem and extra work next season.

However, the three rules I told you about today are the basics, and once you learn how to distinguish the flower bud from the vegetative bud, thin the crown, and keep the fruit tree at the right height, mastering the nuances will be much easier.
