It is difficult to find another marking tool, with the help of which it would be possible with a constant accuracy to obtain clear lines. The tried-and-true step-up tool, consisting of a rod, a movable block that is secured with a small wedge, and a needle called a scratcher, is very quick to set up. When making this planer, first make the bar by sawing the wooden block to the dimensions shown in the figure below. To make the upper edge convex, mount a 13 mm radius rounding cutter in the cutter collet mounted in the table and make partial roundings using only a portion of the cutter profile. Then drill a hole at one end of the boom for a scratchpad, which you can make from a thin nail. To do this, insert the nail into the hole with its tip protruding below by approx. 3 mm, and remove the nail head, leaving the top also approx. 3 mm. Sharpen both ends of the scrape with a fine-toothed file or file.
To make the wedge, glue the outline template onto a 16mm board (the direction of the fibres must be longitudinal, and a piece with a large allowance will ensure safety when shaping the wedge). Use a band saw to cut the wedge along the contour and grind it smoothly so that it slides easily into the gap between the shoe and the bar.
To make a pad, first saw it on the contour, using the glued template. Then drill a through hole of 19mm diameter at the indicated position. Use a chisel, flat file and semicircular file to shape the hole to fit the cross section of the rod and wedge. Note that one edge of the hole is beveled. Check the result frequently by inserting the wedge and the rod into the hole.
To protect the wood, apply a couple of coats of an oil-based finishing agent.

The next element, the presence of which in a thicknessing machine is a must, is the knife shaft. This is the main part of the machine, which performs the processing of wooden workpieces. The best option is to buy a ready-made design with a beads, as self-made shafts are very difficult to make well-balanced. To work such a shaft will suit an asynchronous motor with a capacity of 4-5 kW. Step 1. Clamp a piece of thick-walled pipe (at least 4 mm thick, 150 mm diameter and 100 mm long) and use an angle grinder with a metal disc to cut it into two halves.

The seams should be placed on both sides. After welding the first one, remove the workpiece, open it up, and fasten the sleeves on the back side.
Step 3. Make the jaws. To do this, cut elements of appropriate size from a piece of sheet steel.
The thickness of the steel should be at least 10 mm. the jaws must be sufficiently strong. To reduce the slip coefficient cut a grid pattern into the jaws with a trowel.
Step 4. Make two hinges to hold the vice. Why they are needed? The reason is that in industrial tapes the jaws move in a straight line. their planes are always parallel, but in our case one of them moves in an arc when tightening, and in dependence from the setting to the complete closure the angle between them changes. In order for the jaws to always lie parallel when clamped, one of them must be able to adjust axially (float). The hinges are made in the following way.
- Select a sheet of steel sheet of thickness ≈ 1 mm, length ≈ 50 mm, width ≈ 20 mm.
- Set the metal shaft Ø 5 mm in the center and set the same bars on both sides.
- Place them in a vice and squeeze them as far as they will go. The sheets are bent in this way.
- Cut the strip in half and cut the two hinges off.
Step 5. Attach the joints to one of the lips. To do this, first weld on both sides of the axis along the circumference of the circle. Finish the welds. Then the axes should be placed on the vice jaw and flat pads should be welded to it. Again remove any metal spillage, and cut off any excess lengths of rod. Reassemble all parts and check that they work.
This completes the preparation of the sliding jaws, we must proceed to the clamping mechanism.
