STIHL 180 chain saw repair: troubleshooting and solutions

Alpina façade paints can be used on almost any substrate:

  • Concrete.
  • Facing and common bricks (earthen, silicate, etc.).д.).
  • All kinds of plasters (cement, lime, textured mixtures).
  • Old dispersion coatings.
  • Dispersion fillers.

It is recommended that freshly applied lime-cement plasters be allowed to stand for 4 weeks to remove carbon dioxide from them and to complete the chemical reactions.

Surfaces with high absorbency (porous or cellular materials, gas concrete, etc.).п.) Freshly applied lime-cement plasters must be primed with a suitable primer with antiseptic properties.

When using drywall boards, you can do without a pre-primer.

Faults in the pump and the system as a whole

As you know, nothing is lasting in this world, and over time, everything must be repaired. The STIHL oil system of the ms 180 is no exception, and has its own specific problems. Let’s take a closer look at them.

The signs of a faulty lubrication system are as follows:

  • The chainsaw chain is completely dry and not shiny;
  • Oil in the oil tank won’t run out;
  • the chain stretches quickly and this happens all the time;
  • Saw chainwheel slips sideways while sawing;
  • The tire is heating up and in the area of the drive sprocket, there is melting of the paint.

All of these warning signs point directly or indirectly to problems with the chain lubrication system.

The first thing to do after you suspect that the chain lubrication oil is not coming in is to check the supply. There are two ways to do this. The first one is described in details in the instruction to the tool and is as follows: start up the chainsaw, increase gas pressure as much as possible and direct it towards some obstacle.

If the lubrication system is functioning properly, oil will fly off the tip of the tire and a strip of oil drops will appear on the surface, towards which the tire is directed. If there are still irregularities in the system, the surface will remain clean.

The second way is to remove the bar from the chainsaw and start it. When you increase the engine speed, at the place of installation of the bus shank, oil will flow from the oil duct, if this does not happen, it is necessary to look for the cause of the fault.

Diagnose

Always start with a visual inspection of the STIHL 180 oil receiver (filter) and check the condition of the oil. As a rule, if the filter is badly contaminated, the oil supply may stop.

To save money, you can try to clean a clogged filter by washing it well in gasoline.

Next, you need to remove the sprocket drum, and check the condition of the drive pinion. The threads on it should be clearly pronounced, not nicked and have no other defects, also with the pinion removed, you should check the wire lever. It should fit tightly around the pinion and not turn, otherwise the pinion stands still and does not transmit power to the pump, resulting in a loss of oil flow.

If all the above methods of troubleshooting fail and the chainsaw does not work, it is necessary to take extreme measures, i.e. е. dismantle the pump.

How to remove the pump

The oil pump is installed on the right side of the bottom of the body and the oil pipe from the gasoline tank is connected to it in the same place. To remove the pump, you must first release the saw from the handle, to do this, unscrew the back handle of the unit and disconnect the throttle control rod. The next step is to take out plugs of handle shock absorbers and with the help of a strong slotted screwdriver press them out of their places on the handle.

After the handle is removed, the chainsaw body is turned upside down. The hose that goes from the oil tank to the pump is immediately visible. It must be removed from the seat.

The pump itself can be removed with a screw with M5 thread and a wide washer. The screw should be approximately 45-50 mm long. A washer is put on the screw and it is screwed into the pump (the inside of the pump is threaded). Then, as the screw is screwed in, a stop made from a washer will force the oil pump up over the threads. Hereby the pump is removed from its seat. Before starting work we recommend to read how to disassemble the STIHL 180.

To understand better the process of pump removal, you can watch the video below. In the video, the SC master shows in detail how to remove the oil pump from the chainsaw, and describes the main faults of the feeding system.

The STIHL 180 oil pump is a quality and robust piece of kit, so it should only be replaced as a last resort when all other system components have been tested.

After the pump is removed it needs to be cleaned and purged. The most common cause of damage is blockage. After fixing it, you can reinstall the pump.

Handle removal

Direct disassembly of the STIHL 180, begins with the removal of the handle, which is attached to the body of the chain saw with three rubber shock absorbers. To do this you must remove the plastic plugs from inside the storage compartment of the shock absorbers, and then use a strong screwdriver to first press out the upper shock absorber and then the one closest to the rear handle.

In the back of the handle is installed throttle trigger, which is connected to the carburetor through a wire rod, in order to disconnect the rod from the throttle trigger, you must unscrew two screws and disassemble the handle.

When the handle remains on one shock absorber, it is necessary to unscrew the body of the chainsaw from the inside of the handle and, breaking to the side, remove the body from the last rubber.

Preparatory stage

Repair of any machine must begin with preparatory work, and the STIHL 180 is no exception. The preparatory step is to remove the side cover, chain and guide bar from the STIHL 180 chain saw before disassembling. Then using a compressor and a brush it is necessary to clean the chain saw from dirt, sawdust, oil stains, etc.

When cleaning the saw, special attention should be paid to the place where the chain saw’s drive sprocket is located, t. к. this is the most contaminated area.

In places where there is a lot of oil, it can be cleaned with clean gasoline.

How to correctly disassemble a STIHL chain saw

Before you disassemble your STIHL chain saw you must always do the following preparatory steps. Have a comfortable table ready, dry rags, brushes to wipe parts gently, clean water, gloves and a dry place away from fire

It’s also important to understand that there should be no fuel in the unit. It’s best to work it out rather than drain it and let the saw cool for a few hours before disassembling

Remove the chain, the bar and the side cover; use a compressor if you have one, brushes, a dry sponge to clean the STIHL from oil, dirt, dust, sludge and sawdust

Pay special attention to the drive sprocket. it may contain a lot of soot and dirt; if large accumulations of dirt are difficult to remove mechanically, you can use clean gasoline; look for the three rubber shock absorbers and remove the handle. this can be done by removing the plugs

Using a strong screwdriver, squeeze out first the upper shock absorber, and after that the one at the back handle; disassemble the back of the handle by unscrewing the two screws. So we disconnect the rod from the gas trigger (it connects the carburetor and the gas trigger, which is in the handle); at the moment of fixation of the handle only on the shock absorber. we as if unscrew all the “insides” of the saw and breaking aside. we remove the last fixer on the type of rubber band; the starter is withdrawn by dismantling the upper case cover, and unscrewing 4 screws, on which it is fastened. Next, remove the tank covers. fuel and oil tank. Under the starter is often a clump of dirt, sawdust, which also needs to be cleaned; a 13 head will help unscrew the flywheel. Lock the crankshaft from twisting by unscrewing the plug, namely, through its hole fix the piston lock; by the fact of blocking the piston, you can unscrew the flywheel nut; pre-disconnect the clutch. disengage the star drive. Lock washer is removed from the groove, also a needle bearing; disassembly of STIHL 180 chain saw involves removing the clutch with a 19-size head. Next, remove the deflector plate and oil pump drive, disconnect the ignition wires and air damper rod from the part referred to as the engine lever, and remove the lever itself. Next, unscrew the nuts carb and air filter with a handy head to 8 with an extension cord (if available); unscrewing 2 nuts and pulling a little on yourself. you remove the next part, the muffler; in the bottom of the saw is 4 screws that hold the engine. When removing it accurately, don’t forget about the rubber nozzle on the carburettor, which can be nicked.

To block the crankshaft from turning, you need to unscrew the plug and through the spark plug hole set the piston stopper, if it is not available, use an old starter cord from the starter, with his knots tied and immersed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.

categorically forbidden to keep the flywheel from turning by installing between the ribs and the body of the power screwdriver and other tools, with this method of locking against rotation, the flywheel blades can not withstand the load and break.

When the piston in the cylinder is blocked, there is an option to unscrew the flywheel nut. The thread in the nut is common, so it should be turned to the left side. Having loosened the nut, there is no need to remove it to the end, it is enough to unscrew until its top edge is level with the tip of the shaft, after that a soft metal hammer is set on the nut and a sharp blow is made on it. Thus, from a sharp blow, the handwheel slips off the shaft and it can be simply removed without any additional tools.

To disassemble the clutch, the drive sprocket needs to be removed. For this purpose carefully take out the locking washer from the grooves on the shaft and remove the sprocket and needle bearing.

Removing and replacing the clutch on the chainsaw. Review, instruction

Chain saws, for a variety of reasons, need repairs from time to time. Of course, you could call a service shop or an experienced mechanic. However, many problems can be solved at home, having only a minimum set of skills and tools.

Answering the question of how to remove the clutch from a chainsaw, we note that it is not a difficult operation, if exactly adhere to the technology of disassembly.

Owners may have a hard time with this tool if the chainsaw has been in use for a long time and the clutch parts are stuck to each other.

Even in this case, however, you can disassemble it with your own hands.

Reasons why you need to disassemble the clutch:

  • Faulty or broken spring;
  • As a result of stresses on the chainsaw and wear and tear on the parts, the spring has left its place;
  • Chips on the clutch plate;
  • Parts wear and tear.

Replace the clutch

When replacing the clutch we do not recommend the use of metal or plastic objects as stoppers. The former can scratch the cylinder, the latter can litter it.

  • Engage the chain stop brake, remove the protective cover, and remove the saw headset;
  • Remove dirt, sawdust, and dried lubricant, if any;
  • Remove the air filter and spark plug;
  • Using a spark plug wrench, unscrew the spark plug;
  • Rotating the crankshaft, bring the piston to the upper point, then withdraw it by 6-9 mm;
  • Use a 7-8 mm rope to keep the piston in its up position;
  • Use a special wrench to unscrew the nut on the clutch.

Most of the chainsaw‘s moving parts have right-hand rotation. That is why the nut on the clutch has a left-hand thread. To remove the cover, turn the key clockwise. Do not perform this operation with a hammer and chisel. you will break the facets!

  • Remove cap and drive sprocket. Diagnose malfunctions and evaluate the wear of parts. Evaluate the condition of the needle bearing;
  • If necessary replace the parts with new ones (most often it is the drive sprocket which needs it);

Reassembly of the chainsaw clutch is done in the reverse order, but you should pay attention to some peculiarities

What are the details when reassembling the clutch system?

On some chainsaw models, there may be a washer between the drive sprocket and the clutch. Note which side of the engine it is facing;

Some oil pump drives are equipped with a special spring (or “whisker”) to transmit the rotary motion from the drive sprocket to the oil pump. It is important to adjust the spring so that its free end (or “whisker”) enters the groove in the sprocket housing. Otherwise the saw headset will not lubricate;

The brake pedal and brake pads must be replaced at all times to prevent injury and damage to the clutch

Important: Always check the automatic oil feed system after disassembling and reassembling the clutch
