Ice drill starter drill make your own hands

Electric screwdriver parameter requirements

The choice of the ice pick for the ice drill is based on the tasks facing it, namely to work well and for a long time:

drill, make, your, hands

Next is to decide what kind of battery is needed, so that after a few minutes your screwdriver will not turn into a useless unit, uselessly dragged around the pond. Basically, anglers stop at the three types of batteries:

  • Li-Ion batteries. They charge quickly, are lightweight, but they can’t handle hard frosts. However, the latest models of lithium-ion batteries are designed for use at low temperatures, but they still have to be taken out and periodically hidden behind the groove;
  • Nickel-cadmium batteries. They are highly frost-resistant, but greatly weigh the ice drill down;
  • Nickel-metal hydride batteries. The best power cell for a screwdriver, which is something in between the batteries mentioned above.

Practice has shown that the nickel-cadmium batteries are most often preferred by anglers. Despite their weight, they cope with the main duty of a good ice drill. to break through any ice, regardless of severe frost. And that, you must agree, is not an unimportant factor in winter fishing.

Battery capacity is not in last place when choosing a screwdriver. It should not be less than 2.5-3 Ah to drill a few dozen holes before the battery is completely discharged.

Choice of material for manufacturing

In most cases, p18 steel is used, although it has analogues. First of all, you need to pay attention to how hard the material is, what shape it is and what is the quality of sharpening.

There are also blades, covered with titanium nitride. These blades last a very long time. Their value of 75 indicates that they are very durable.

Fishermen use both to make this tool. The use of an electric screwdriver allows you to increase the performance capabilities of the drill, at the expense of drilling speed.

To build such a drill for winter fishing is capable of anyone who has minimal experience in working with metal. For this you will need:

  • Ordinary hand-held ice drill;
  • angle grinder;
  • Cylindrical metal billet with a diameter equal to or slightly less than the drill pipe thickness;
  • Metal disk with a diameter larger than the diameter of the auger;
  • Electric screwdriver;
  • Bolts and nuts with a thread of 8 mm.

A cordless electric screwdriver should operate at a voltage of at least 18 V, and torque is needed from 40 to 80 Nm. Often in one fishing trip have to change several times, which means the capacity of the battery should be about 3A / h. For convenience, it is better to choose an electric screwdriver with an extra handle on the chuck. If it’s not available, you’ll have to add it yourself.

How to make an ice drill

Now ice drills are not scarce, as they were 10-15 years ago, but the cost of good models can undermine the family budget. The way out could be to make a self-made drill. First we should consider the manufacture of a manual drill. First, it is a bit easier, and second, in terms of making the working body the process is identical to making a gasoline or electric drill.

To make them, you will need:

    cutting knives or metal to make them. As a blank you can use an unnecessary saw blade, most importantly, that it was made of high quality, durable and non-fragile steel, such as R18 or similar analogues;

  • A metal pipe of a suitable diameter. The same can be used to make handles for the ice drill;
  • metal auger;
  • Paint to give the finished product a marketable appearance and to protect it from rust.

All elements are connected to each other by welding and are machined with a grinder. To simplify transportation of the ready ice drill, instead of welding the handles, they can be made detachable by means of brackets. For connection in this case it is convenient to use a bolt and a wing nut. special attention should be paid to the manufacturing and sharpening of blades: this is the main thing for quick and easy drilling. A manual ice drill can easily drill through ice up to half a meter thick. What to do if the ice is especially thick, or dozens of holes need to be made in a day?? It is possible to make a mechanical ice drill from an electric screwdriver with your own hands.

Ice Drill with an electric screwdriver for our own hands

The ice-thrower takes the most important place in equipment of a winter fisherman. And if thin ice can be cut through with an axe or an axe, then it is unlikely to make a hole in a meter-long shell without a special tool.

Some fishermen make different drilling devices with their own hands.

When seriously engaging in winter fishing one cannot do without such an important tool as an ice drill. With its help it is possible to make perfectly shaped holes in the ice up to 1 m deep.

The classic ice fishing tool is a huge drill that is powered either manually or with an electric or gasoline engine. This ice drill design is the most universal of all available options.

A well-sharpened tool will cope with any thickness of ice, both in severe frost and in thaw. All self-made drills of fishermen can be divided into several groups.

Some masters modernize purchased products, while others make tools from scratch. Let’s consider the most common fishing designs for drilling.

Handmade self-made ice drill

A few decades ago, buying a functional ice drill was a real windfall for the winter fishing enthusiast.

Most often, domestic samples categorically refused to drill the ice, sliding on a smooth surface. And no matter how hard the fisherman pressed the tool against the ice, it took a lot of calories to drill several holes. And the next day my whole body was aching from exhaustion.

Foreign ice drills were unavailable and unknown to Soviet fishermen. So the need to make a working tool with my own hands forced me.

It is clear that without help from metalworking companies it would be very difficult to make a real ice pick.

About 10 years ago, a friend of mine who was a technologist at an engineering plant, set out to build an ice pick for himself.

I will try to briefly describe the whole technological chain he overcame:

  • The easiest part was finding a tube of suitable diameter for the tool. From one piece of pipe he bent the handle (rotary bolt), and the second piece was intended for the lower part of the design (screw).
  • It was much more difficult to make the base for the blades. Here I first had to sketch the design of the Barnaul product, and then realize the idea by the skilful hands of the milling engineer, turner and fitter. After that the base was inserted inside the tube and welded on the contour.
  • There was a lot of fuss with making the curved spiral auger parts. My colleague decided to make them short, so he welded the individual parts to the tube, as well as to each other. After that the welds had to be smoothed with a grinder.
  • Homemade brackets and a long bolt with a wing nut were used to connect the two parts of the ice drill.
  • Many problems arose with the ice drill blades. At that time, the usual trapezoidal models were in fashion, as well as their versions with a step. Work began with the selection of metal, which after hardening could give a hardness of 55-60 units. Then the cutter made the dimensions of the knives, the fitter drilled the holes, the thermist performed the hardening, and the grinder formalized the sharpening.
  • The amateur fisherman did the final stage himself. He painted the product and assembled all the parts.

While the ice was not very thick, a comrade with a homemade drill was able to drill holes. But when the ice shell reached a thickness of 0.5 meters, he had to admit that the construction was a failure.

There are many ways to increase the catch of fish, but the most effective units. Below, the editorial staff of this site shares with you the 3 most effective ways to increase your catch:

Much easier and more effective looks the refinement of a well-functioning hand-held ice pick. Recently, there have appeared powerful cordless screwdrivers, which have excellent torque. Savvy fishermen immediately figured out how to apply this device in winter fishing.

To create a model with an electric drive will be needed:

The main work of the fisherman will concern the manufacture of the adapter. It can be purchased in a store or ordered by a turner or milling contractor you know.

The adapter has two pieces made from the same piece of iron. A cylindrical part is made on one edge that will connect to the ice drill auger. The cylinder is drilled through, so that the adapter can be bolted to the auger tube.

The other part (shank) is made in the form of a hexahedron or tetrahedron. This will be the side where the adapter will be clamped into the chuck of the electric screwdriver.

If the thickness of ice in your region in winter exceeds the length of the auger, you need to make a pipe of similar diameter an insert between the adapter and the auger.

The screwdriver has the following requirements

At air temperatures below.10°C it is better to disconnect the battery from the tool and hide it in a jacket

Homemade Gasoline Ice Drill

Particularly skillful fishermen have found a second use for chain saws. In summer they use the tool for its direct purpose, making firewood for the fire, and in winter with a special adapter to the saw is mounted ice auger. This kind of modernization makes it possible to make holes quickly even in a thick layer of ice.

Any chainsaw will do for making a homemade ice buggy. It is convenient to work with old Soviet models, which need to be held with two hands. The main thing is that the tool should start well in cold weather. When using modern Chinese saws or brand-name products (STIHL or Husqvarna) will have to invent an adapter with a handle.

The main problem when docking the high-speed chainsaw and ice auger is to reduce speed by installing a reduction gear. On one side the reducer should be attached to the base of the saw, and on the other side the auger should enter and be securely fixed there. Here it is better to draw an adapter from an already tested model and then order it to be made in a metalworking factory. Each saw needs a small but important tweak.

Anglers continue to amaze people with their developments. And if earlier the manufacture of simple tools for drilling holes was a forced measure, today the craftsmen have reached a new level.

Using electric and gasoline-powered devices, they made motorized ice drills. The value of such products is not only the rapid formation of holes in the ice. The same devices can, after minor manipulations, perform their direct duties of sawing firewood or screwing screws.

The benefits of automating the ice drill by using an electric screwdriver.

When comparing different ice drill designs, fishermen stop at the choice of an ice drill from an electric screwdriver.

Icefishermen note the following advantages:

  • Easy to assemble gear. Does not require much time, professional knowledge.
  • Economical upgrading of ice drill with an adapter.
  • The self-satisfaction of making an ice fishing accessory with your own hands.

Adapter making

This adapter serves as a connection between the auger and the drive tool. It is possible to buy it in a specialized outlet or make it with your own hands.

Adapter has a hexagonal shape. One end is securely locked in the actuator cartridge with a wrench designed for this purpose. The other end is attached to the auger. Drill a hole in the adapter, then fasten it to the auger with a screw.

It is better not to make an auger of large diameter, it will increase the load on the driving tool and quickly destroy its battery.

This homemade device greatly simplifies the process of drilling holes in winter fishing, and you can make an ice drill from a screwdriver in just a couple of hours.

So, the process of making the adapter. Dismantled the handle of the ice pick.

Measured the place of attachment of the future adapter.

Then I welded an u-shaped adapter from a metal angle.

I cut the hex shank from the drill and welded the shank to the P-junction and to the ice drill, the construction is demountable, drilled a hole and screwed in the bolt.

Trying on a screwdriver, I used a cordless drill Makita BDF 458 RFE 18V 13mm 3.0Ah Li-ion 91. 58 Nm.

One more variant of making an ice drill.

During winter fishing, fishermen drill dozens of holes, and sometimes, there are just a lot of them. In the end, fishing is comparable to grueling labor in the field or vegetable garden. Despite the difficulties, the pleasure of fishing is worth the extra effort.

High cost of equipment, other inconveniences made fishermen think about improving ice drills and making an ice reel with their own hands from an electric screwdriver. Attaching it to the screwdriver saved invaluable time and effort, which is very important in winter time. What to choose an electric screwdriver

Design, construction, features of adapters

The use of the device involves several simple steps:

  • The bolt that connects the two parts of the drill is unscrewed.
  • An adapter is mounted to the auger in place of the top part of the auger with the handles.
  • The hexagonal shank is clamped into the chuck of the screwdriver (or nutrunner).

It is important to observe the alignment of holes. On the other end of the screwdriver you need to make a hex shank for the chuck of an electric screwdriver. It is better to entrust this to an experienced turner, but you can try to grind the hex by yourself on a grinding wheel. It is unlikely to make the shank neat, but still a primo will have a positive effect on the speed of drilling through the ice.
