How to cut a ceiling plinth: work with or without a tool
Any repair requires attention to the smallest detail. How well the finish is done determines the appearance of the room and its overall perception. To a greater extent, this applies to the ceilings, which in most cases are not perfect, so to hide all the imperfections (their and the walls), many owners use ceiling skirting boards, which give the rooms completeness. If the installation of baguettes in straight areas is not particularly difficult, the joints of the elements in the corners require maximum accuracy. Therefore, many owners, who are planning, or have already started the repair, are interested in how to cut the ceiling plinth, what tools can be used for this stage of the work.
The answer to the question of how to cut a ceiling plinth, depends on what material it is made of. Cutting is different, since the baguettes have different density. Therefore, the first thing to consider is the most popular materials, and at the same time the peculiarities of their cutting.
Such products have the lowest price, because the material is very unstable to mechanical influences. Styrofoam is easy to scratch, damage by accidental impact. Pros. minimum weight, which simplifies gluing, easy processing, the ability to paint in any color.
This foam material is made up of small granules that separate from each other quite easily. However, they are the main disadvantage of such baguettes. They require a very sharp tool. Otherwise the skirting board could crumble, that’s why it would be unsuitable for installation. This is true for both angular and flat cutting.
This contender is more expensive, but it does not differ from the first candidate very much, since it is a “relative” of Styrofoam: it is produced from expanded polystyrene. This material also consists of small granules, but they are closer together. But polystyrene foam will not tolerate a blade that is not too sharp, it will also crumble. Therefore, the master needs to prepare no less than a sharp tool.
The main advantage of foam and polystyrene foam is their softness, which allows you to avoid gaps by pressing the workpieces tightly to each other and to the corners.
Extruded polystyrene foam
EPPS is made from the same raw materials as conventional polystyrene foam, but in this case use a different, more advanced technology. Conventional PPP is made with steam, which is passed through the microgranules.
To obtain extruded polystyrene foam, the particles are mixed at high temperature and pressure, and then a foaming agent is added to the raw material. The size of the granules in this material is much smaller (maximum 0.2 mm), as a result it is less crumbly and more durable. Very sharp tools are not required for its cutting, but bluntness of the cutting edge is also not welcomed.
Plastic skirting boards (PVC). another type of ceiling products. They are usually purchased for finishing bathrooms. If we consider the topic “How to cut a ceiling plinth”, in this case they are exceptions, because they use special, ready-made corners to dock them.
Generally speaking, these baguettes can be cut with a stationery knife, a metal hacksaw, or a sharp kitchen tool. Since PVC products do not reshape because they are not resilient, you should not put too much pressure on them when you cut them.
This is another representative of polymer products. It is characterized by high density and lacks the disadvantages of previous competitors. It is easy to cut, so the tool must be sharp, but there are no maximum requirements for its sharpening. Polyurethane skirting boards do not crumble, do not warp, and handle almost any pressure with honor.
This traditional material is cut with conventional carpentry tools: for example, a jigsaw, hand or electric. The places of the cut are treated with sandpaper or a file. Since such products are more expensive than other skirting boards, care is required when working. A serious mistake can be made easily, but there is no way to fix it. The consequence of negligence will be the purchase of a new baguette.
An ideal tool for cutting wood would be an electric mitre saw. The biggest disadvantage of it. the high price, especially high-quality models. On the other hand, buyers have the opportunity to find an inexpensive tool that will do a decent job.
Outer corners are less common than inner corners, and they are much easier to trim. We will now do everything the other way around than when we trimmed the inside corners.
Initially we need to note where our corner will begin, and to do this we put the ceiling plinth to the wall with a marking: now the point of intersection of ceiling plinths will be the upper point of their adjacency, we mark it with a simple pencil and we can begin to prepare the plinth: for the left-hand corner we place the plinth in the mortar so that the top of the molding was pressed to the wall, the bottom. to the bottom, and the long edge was on the right. Again cut along the slit with a mark of 45 degrees. The right-hand corner is prepared on the same principle, only the long edge of the blade will be on the left.
In the case of rounded corners, no tools will help us and we will have to do everything “by eye.
The easiest way to form such a corner is to cut the ceiling moulding into several parts of about 5 cm each, trim all the parts on both sides and check the joint in place, adjust if necessary and glue them one by one. Leave the pieces that will join the main skirting at the beginning and end of the rounding on one side flat. It is important not to mix up the pieces, so you can number them with a pencil.
- Do not worry that in the joints on the ceiling plinth can remain gaps, because they can be easily putty and after drying and painting are invisible. Exceptions are wood ceiling skirting boards. even putty in tone can be noticeable.
- Try on the cuts while still on the floor, because it’s easier than on the stepladder. Do not glue on the skirting boards until you are sure that you have trimmed them correctly.
- Do not get upset if something does not work, and the cuts have to be adjusted a few times, have patience and everything will turn out.
As the saying goes, fear the eyes, but do the hands! If it is well to think through every movement, there is nothing terrible in the independent trimming of the baseboard, and beautifully decorated room will please the eye of the owner and his guests.
Quality repair requires a careful and accurate attitude to detail.
Completing the work with the ceiling, it is necessary to decorate it well. for this purpose, ceiling plinths are used. As a rule, the installation of planks does not cause any special difficulties, to twist will have to corners. Let’s consider in detail how to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners, talk about different ways, give useful recommendations
Ceiling plinths of any material can be cut, using one of the following methods. They are suitable for all except plastic: such are decorated using prefabricated corners.
What tools can be used to cut corners
Cutting the ceiling skirting board (outer corner) with explanations will be a good help to the novice craftsman.
How to get the right angle ceiling plinth
A lot of problems when working with ceiling plinths arise in the design of corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, just cut at the right angle will not work: trim so that they dock and preferably. without large gaps. In fact, there are several ways of how to make the corner of the ceiling plinth ideal, well, or almost ideal.
When the corners and walls in the room are flat, you can use a special carpentry tool. the chisel. Chisel, this is a groove in the form of an inverted letter “U”, inside which, marked lines for sawing at an angle of 90 ° and 45 °. The part in which you want to make a notch is placed inside, a saw is inserted into the guides. The part is held in place, cut at the desired angle.
The chair can be made of wood, plastic or metal
In the case of the skirting boards is not so simple: they must simultaneously adhere to two surfaces, so they must be pressed to one or the other side of the jigsaw. If you work with ceiling skirting boards, they are nestled on the side closest to you.
Sequence of operations in the outer corner
It is necessary to make a cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the plank in front of you. Try on how the baseboard will be positioned, determining which part will be fastened to the ceiling. To avoid confusion and to cut the ceiling plinth correctly, the plank that will be located on the right, you put on the right, the one on the left. on the left.
The correct positioning of the skirting board in the jigsaw
That part that turns out on the ceiling, press to the bottom of the plinthole. The second side is closer to you and is raised. Lean it against the wall of the mitre saw to keep it from wobbling when sawing. That is, the front part of the skirting board is turned away from you. The direction of the kerf do as shown in the photo below. Putting the two cut parts together, you get a protruding. outer or outer corner.
Cutting lines for the outer corner of the ceiling plinth
First saw the sawed off parts in place “dry”, without applying glue. If the geometry of the angle is not so perfect, you can correct it with a utility knife. Small errors are easier to cover with a special putty.
Sequence of steps for inner corner trim
First, you try on which side will be on the ceiling, this part pressed to the bottom of the wood chisel, the second part rests on the wall closest to you and make notches as shown in the photo below.
Cut lines for the inner corner of a skirting board
And in the same way as you did for the sawing of the outer corner, at first you try on without applying glue, and correct a little if necessary. Then apply a thin strip of glue to both surfaces that will be glued to the wall or ceiling.
Cut a skirting board corner without mitre saw
In apartments or houses do not always have the corners exactly under 90 °. Small deviations are easily corrected after fitting. But not always. Then we have to mark everything “in place”. that is, under the ceiling.
You will need a thinly outlined pencil (hard. it is not so visible on the ceiling, but near leaves quite clear marks), a small piece of baseboard, a ruler and a good office knife if you work with polyurethane baguettes (polystyrene) or a saw on metal to work with other materials.Place the plinth against the corner, pencil along the outer edge of the plinth. Attach to the other side of the corner, and also mark. You get the ceiling cross, the center of which marks the place where the ceiling plinth trim should converge (see photo). Having established in a corner of a piece of a plinth which there will be glued and having set its end in a wall, we transfer a mark on it.
Mark the place on the ceiling where the skirting boards should converge on the ceiling
Then, take a ruler and connect the edge of the baseboard with the mark applied. If you just put the baseboard on the table and cut along the line, the two parts will not fit together in the corner anyway: the inner part will be in the way. You can trim it later by trying it on the ceiling.
There is a second way. install the piece to be trimmed to the table, the part that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the line, but keep the knife at an angle of about 45°. Correction will still be needed, but much less (and less chance of error).
Repeat the same operation with the second slat. You put it to the desired wall, rest the end against the adjoining wall, mark the place where the cross is drawn, run a line for a trimmer and then cut it off. The correction is done “dry” without applying glue.
Exactly the same action you repeat for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way to make the corner of the ceiling plinth, and without strusla or other special devices.
Making a jig or template
If you need a wire cutter for regular work, and you can’t buy it for some reason at the moment, you can make such a tool from a well-treated board or plywood. You will need to prepare three pieces of wood. The walls should be 500×100×15 and 500×80×15, and the bottom part 500×200×20. The different height of the walls will contribute to a more comfortable sawing of the parts. The parts will be assembled from a peculiar box without end walls.
Despite the fact that it is not so difficult to glue ceiling plinths, there are tips that you should heed:
- The walls must be clean and dust free. Any dirt will reduce the adhesive properties of the base.
- It is better to make the underside of the slats rough, because the smooth surface has a low quality of adhesion to the surface.
- It is important to choose a quality adhesive with a good fixation, especially for heavy baguettes. Also, you should not use solvent adhesive for polystyrene skirting boards, such a compound can ruin the material.
- After gluing ceiling plinths, do not allow draughts in the room within a day, the glue must be well seized.
Selection of tools for cutting ceiling plinths
In order to cut a ceiling plinth properly and accurately, it is necessary to use a proper cutting tool. It is chosen depending on the material from which the baseboards are made:
Styrofoam. It has a low strength and is relatively inexpensive, so foam models are becoming increasingly popular. Their durability does not particularly affect performance, because ceiling plinths are not usually subjected to mechanical stress. For cutting is suitable usual stationery knife.
It can be purchased in a construction store or make your own hands according to these instructions:
Three 5015 cm boards are nailed to form a three-sided, rectangular box with a long edge. Please note, a 90 degree angle must be maintained between the side planks and the cross plank.
To work with this homemade device was convenient and safe, the boards should be well sanded before bonding.
Ceiling skirting. fillet
To do it correctly, it is important to strictly follow the existing recommendations and rules of finishing works. And then the result will delight you.
In the attachment of the fillet (so called this element) there are no difficulties: in fact, all varieties of products are attached to a reliable glue.
In order to hang a ceiling plinth, even inexperienced repairers have no difficulty. Worries them quite another thing: how to properly cut the ceiling plinth? Virtually every room, no matter how intricately shaped, is equipped with corners.
And here in these internal corners, the individual elements of the skirting board must be beautifully and evenly docked. And in rooms of particularly complex configuration will have to fudge and over the outer corners. Let’s try to figure out how to be in each of these situations, and how to cut the right part with the available tools.
Baseboard materials and cutting methods
On sale today you can find products made of foam (polyvinyl chloride), wood, polystyrene foam and polyurethane.
Perhaps some of the cheapest skirting boards are made of foam plastic, which is a brittle, soft and brittle material.
Even the fingers of the hands can leave dents on them, they easily form creases and defects. Trim beautifully and evenly a corner of the PVC baseboard is difficult.
Inexperienced craftsman a large amount of purchased material can go to waste for this reason. Also this polymer has high electrostatic properties, which explains its ability to collect dust.
It is most convenient to cut such a baseboard with a hacksaw or a sharp construction knife.
Styrofoam products are also inexpensive, although this material is more durable analog of the traditional foam.
Handled with a sharp tool as well.
Extruded polystyrene foam
Skirting boards made of extruded polystyrene foam are a little more expensive, they are somewhat denser and more difficult to cut. But they are much less crumbly and break.
Therefore it is more convenient and easier to cut them. For this purpose it is convenient to use a hacksaw or a sharp knife.
Polyurethane skirting boards for the ceiling are currently probably one of the most expensive.
But they justify their cost: moisture-resistant, quite strong and dense, quite elastic.
Placed over the kitchen stove, the baseboard can warp and even crack a little.
They are perfectly cut with a special knife, without forming crumbs. But these products are very sensitive to temperature changes.
Wooden skirting boards for the ceiling are quite heavy and thick products, hard and durable.
They are well amenable to processing with a special fine-toothed hacksaw. You can also use a reliable metal blade. So how to trim a ceiling plinth correctly?
Note that each master has the opportunity not to pore over the exact cutting and fitting corners.
In a construction store, you can buy a prefabricated corner element, in which the prepared edges of the baseboard can be easily inserted.
It is enough to measure the necessary length of the workpiece, and cut it at right angles.
All defects and imperfections will hide this special element. But such a convenient way to use is not always possible, because the standard sizes of such factory corners can differ markedly from the size of the baseboard itself.
Such angles will stand out for their disproportionality, and it will not look very neat. But if the design of the room and the size of blanks allow you to use this method, you should not neglect it.
How to trim a ceiling plinth correctly. Important trifles
Measurements necessary for the trimming of the skirting boards on the ceiling, should be made in a special way. To determine and mark the inside corner, the length must be measured from the corner itself. To mark the outer corner, be sure to take into account that the plinth will protrude into the interior of the room at a distance that equals its width.
It is not desirable to affix the skirting boards before their precise positioning has been tested and the counter skirting has been cut. Only after a perfect convergence in the corner of both mating strips can you begin mounting and fastening them. If work is carried out with polyurethane or wooden skirting boards, defects and errors can be corrected with a file or file. To fit the foam product, you should be armed with a sharp knife.
If, even after finishing plinths remain even a small gap, do not rush to upset. it is not difficult to patch with an ordinary putty. To cut accurately and neatly ceiling plinth is not that difficult. But to gain at least a little skill, try beforehand to practice on small workpieces.
