It is important to maintain the angle of the back angle of the upper blade, this can only be done using a template. Two types of files are used for chain saw chain sharpening: the round file and the flat file. A round file must fit the diameter of the circularity of the saw teeth of the particular chain. For example, to sharpen a STIHL 180 chain saw with your own hands, you need a file with a diameter of 4 mm. Files with a diameter of 3,8 to 4,8 mm can be used for the rest of the chains of this type. For chains, which are used on professional saws are used files with diameter from 5,2 to 5,5 mm.
It is not enough to use a circular file to properly dress the chain, because in addition to sharpening the teeth, it is necessary to correct the kerf depth limiter. if this point is missed the chain can not cut deep enough into the material to be sawn, which slows down the cutting speed and affects the life of the motor. A flat file should be used for this type of sharpening.
While sharpening, protect your hands with tight gloves and your eyes with goggles.
Useful things to remember
The following recommendations are useful:
- To begin with place the tool on a flat and stable surface. a table or bench would work well. If you are in the woods, just find a wide boulder or stump. Check the tines all around the circumference for chips and other imperfections: it may be that some of the tines are broken.
- Put the saw brake in working position. this will block the movement of the chain on the bar. Make sure the cutting attachment is taut during sharpening. it is recommended to put a log or a common piece of twig under the tire. that way it will not fall through when pressed. You can buy special clamps to hold the bar in a stationary position.
- While sharpening, the file moves from the inside of the tooth toward the outer edge of the edge, rotating the file around its axis. The tool should be moved parallel to the special marking on the chain. This mark serves as a pointer to the correct sharpening angle of the cutting edge. For the convenience of the process itself, the tooth you are sharpening should be in the center of the bar.
- All sharpening should be done in protective clothing and gloves, because. к. the cutting edge of the teeth is very sharp, so there is a high risk of injury. For a uniform sharpening, the manufacturers recommend the same number of file movements for each tooth; in practice, this recommendation can only be applied to teeth that are undamaged.
- For easier sharpening, the file can be used in combination with a special file holder that has a marking for the allowable angles. With the help of these marks it is possible to sharpen teeth not only for cross-cutting but also for longitudinal sawing. A tapping block can also be helpful for people who might not be as experienced as a professional tapping block.
How to choose the right file size for sharpening your chain?
The main difficulty is to determine the size of the round file, because the work performed by the flat tool is much easier. For STIHL saw teeth the top end of the file must protrude on the surface of the working angle by 20% of its height. At the same time, you should also keep in mind the pitch of the saw chain, which is usually taken as 0.325 inches.
The next step in selecting a file is to clarify the length of the file. This depends on the file size. GOST 1465 establishes five numbers of this tool, but as a file for sharpening gasoline saws will fit only or 5. Files have a working length of 200 mm, and of 250 mm and 300 mm. As the range of motion for the hand increases, so does the quality of the file guidance on the tooth. Consequently, a longer file is better for sharpening.
Besides the length, it is important to correctly determine the type of available notches. They can be with chopped or notched teeth. For sharpening it is better to use notched, because otherwise the cutting angle varies in a wider range of values (70±10 0 ), which is unacceptable for chain saw tooth treatment.

How often should the chain on a chainsaw be sharpened??

The disciplines in which loggers compete are based on operations that any logger performs every day, so you won’t see “saw throwing at range” competitions here. All relates to real logging practices.
With such a chain the productivity is significantly increased, but at the same time the vibration is increased. Such chains are used for industrial logging operations.
There are many stories of treasures that were hidden during the war. And a similar story happened to a Czech named Rudy Schlattner, who returned years later to his ancestral home to find the family treasure his father had hidden before he was evacuated.
The smaller the pitch of the saw chain, the less vibration it has, but with this the performance decreases. this has to be taken into account when buying in the store.

Before you start working with your chainsaw for a long time, it should be inspected and a test sawing should be carried out, as a result of which:
- Visually inspect for the presence (or absence) of a tapered area around the corner of the tooth and the radius curvature that is the main feature of blunting (see scraping). Fig. 2).
- Check the feed pressure at which the tool is working steadily and produces a fast cut. For sharp teeth, the initial moment of tooth penetration into the wood is quick and without significant material resistance.
- Check if the chain vibrates when making a steady cut. if you can feel it, the teeth need to be resharpened.
- Examine the appearance of the end face that has just been cut (particularly if the tool is used for rip sawing). In case of rough chips and dents the chain of a chainsaw has to be sharpened.
Sharpening Angles and Chainsaw Tooth Configuration
The cutting edge of the tooth is characterized by the following parameters:
In addition, each tool model has its own tooth pitch, the value of which for domestic and semi-professional models is related to the power of the chainsaw, and the torque that the drive develops. For example, a smaller pitch is used for rip sawing (e.g., 0.325 in.). This will reduce productivity, but the effort required will be much lower. Upper cutting rates for chain saws are seldom used, mainly for cutting trees with big diameter trunks. Engine power in this case should not exceed 2500 W.
thickness of cutting edge of the majority of chainsaw producers sets the same, and is equal to 1.3 mm (there are also edges with 1.1 mm thickness, but, firstly, it is extremely difficult to sharpen them in house conditions, and, secondly, such links are extremely nonfunctional: they can be used only for cutting of thin limbs).
chain profile height can be either 0,625 mm or 0,762 mm, and in the vast majority of cases low profile is used for home chain saws. When sharpening the limiters, this parameter is very important, because with the reduction of the height above the permissible values vibration of the tool during work increases, although the quality of the cut is still satisfactory. For this reason it is not recommended to reduce the height of the limiter when sharpening the tooth.
Angle of chain sharpening depends on whether the chainsaw is to be used for cross-cutting or rip sawing. Since the resistance of the wood is always noticeably higher with longitudinal sawing, the tooth edge must be very sharp. It is recommended to make it in a range of 6 12° (for comparison. if a cross cut prevails. up to 25 30°). Naturally, in the first case, the sharpening has to be done more often and particularly carefully, because the unacceptably small angle of the tooth inclination contributes to its fast chipping out when the chainsaw works. It is especially important for chainsaws made of constructional alloy steels containing silicon and manganese, for example, 40KhGS or 35KhGSA.
Chainsaw chain. care and sharpening
The functionality of the tool depends on the serviceability of the working assembly. An improperly set or blunt chainsaw chain will make work a misery. The saw chain is a vulnerable part. Teeth wear out, links stretch, resin bonded blade brakes. Proper care and timely replacement will extend the life of your tool.
Parameters of the chain headset
Each saw unit is designed for a specific performance profile. So, the distances between the teeth of the driven sprocket and the drive sprocket are standard. And the chain teeth fit precisely into the chain holes created by the moving links on the rivets.
This distance is called chain pitch and is measured in inches:
- The 0.325 chain is designed for light-duty applications and is used on household tools;
- pitch o.375 (3/8) is used on saws up to 4 kW;
- 0,404 chain pitch used on professional tools.
Driving link thickness defines durability of a chainsaw chain and is measured within the limits of 1.1 to 2.0 mm. An important distinguishing factor is the chain profile. For recreational chainsaws, the bar is mounted with a low profile that reduces the load on the engine.
High profile saws “tear” the wood deeper and more aggressively. But in this case the vibrations are intensified. Professional tools have a high-profile, long-pitch saw blade that vibrates heavily and that can be harmful to both the saw and the operator.
So choose a middle ground. large pitch, low profile or vice versa.
The number of links in a chainsaw chain depends on the bar length and is specified in the data sheet. Leading chainsaw manufacturers use their own chains. Consider the most reliable saw blade Husqvarna, section 1, 6 mm links are strong, steel is used carbide.
Makita saw chains with a tooth thickness of 1.1 to 1.3 mm are considered light. Oregon is a world-renowned chain sharpening company. The Picco Duro, Rapid Duro, Picco Micro saw chains are recognized as the best and have all kinds of hardfaced cutting edges including tungsten carbide.
The price of a chainsaw chain depends on the material used and the number of cutting teeth in the blade.
Saw unit care. chain tensioning criteria
The saw blade is under a tremendous amount of stress while working. Over time the pitch of the chain increases and it is even possible that the blade slips on the teeth.
It is normal for the top tooth to rise up into the groove when it is pulled up and stay a third of the way up. It is not normal for the lower part of the chain to sag too much.
How to tension the chain on a chainsaw correctly? It is necessary to loosen the bar fastener and tension the chain.
To tension the chain, there is a tensioning device. By rotating the adjusting screw, a pin moves the guide bar in the groove, the saw guide bar is moved forward to increase the axial spacing of the chain tension. When adjusting you need to rotate the chain and make sure it doesn’t slack off and has no jams along the way. After tightening the bar, check that it is working properly.
Overextension can cause damage to the tire, rupture of riveted joints. A loose chain will cause the chain to bite and slip, possibly breaking off. The tensioning bolt may be on the front or on the side behind the protective housing.
Why chainsaw chain lubrication is needed
Lubricating the rubbing parts of machinery creates a film in the gap that prevents the surfaces from coming into contact.
- less effort is needed to move the mechanism;
- Reduce abrasion on the mating parts;
- Prevent heating up when sawing, friction smoke;
- prevents the saw chain from sticking.
Modern saws have a continuous, forced lubrication system. there are still chain saws that periodically let the lubricant flow from the oil reservoir; the pump is activated by a button on the handlebar.
Chainsaw chain oil is chosen to be specially formulated. It should:
- Maintain fluidity at minus temperatures;
- Have special additives that keep the teeth from getting greasy;
- Protect from saw blade sharpening.
This is the quality of speciality oils developed and produced by STIHL and other leading manufacturers. M6 and M8 oils are suitable. Lubrication of the chain during operation is checked by working on a clean piece of paper at idle speed. The oil should leave a distinctive stripe-like mark. Lack of lubrication causes the chain to heat up and leaves the area around the saw unit smoky.
The denser the wood, the more effort it takes to cut it. The automatic feeder provides flow depending on the chain load. The oil then mixes with sawdust and is absorbed by the sawdust.
If you use a chainsaw from a well-known foreign brand, you should use the recommended oil. The chainsaw chain oil depends on the oil to be used and the length of time between repairs. Less load on the saw unit will create better conditions for engine operation.
How to sharpen a chainsaw chain
Every chainsaw loses its edge over time. Working with blunt tools is not possible, the motor is overloaded and the work moves slowly. That’s why saws are sharpened without too much wear on the teeth. Depending on the quality of the saw blade, sharpening may be necessary after different hours of use.
It is not possible to sharpen a chain pobedite surfaced chain at home. But such tool is several times more expensive and is used in special conditions. The other blades can be sharpened using a chain saw chain file, a special tool kit or a sharpening machine.
It is important to get the final result, regardless of how you work and what tools you use. Proper sharpening angle, cutting plane, and even edges of all the teeth will restore the chain blade to working order.
