Instructions: how to saw with a hand jigsaw. Why the jigsaw is crooked and how to fix it How to make the jigsaw sawing straight
Sawing, sawing, hud. carving. all this is an indispensable process of interior design and decoration.
The method is used in both external and internal processing.
From time immemorial, this craft helped our ancestors in construction, and the results of the work decorated houses, farmsteads, farmsteads objects of everyday life.
These days the art of “sawing” is still relevant, and, as we think, will always be relevant.
But here comes the unforgettable 21st century. In connection with the tireless technological progress, giving birth to more and more new tools for processing, sawing and sawing became a little more convenient and easier.
But on the agenda is the “most unique” tool of all time! Old-timer, you might say. Ladies and gentlemen. meet His Majesty the Jigsaw ! A round of applause!
But before we take this royalty in our hands, let us understand how to choose the right jigsaw.
And so, we need the most common tool we have. The easiest. It does not cost much.
The hardest part is choosing the right saws for the jigsaw. At the moment the market is stuffed up with old examples of saws, even Soviet, with a thickness of just a few millimeters.
If you are going to saw with this contraption, in addition to saws you will have to stock up on immeasurable patience, because it’s a truly hellish job.
Probably the most annoying thing in this business is that as soon as this two-three-millimeter is well heated from friction, it has all chances to burst to hell when you saw some plywood, and you immediately have to put a new one.
Mostly such a saw lasts for a few hours of work, and even then, if you handle it carefully.
If it’s not careful, it’ll take half an hour, max. In addition, it is worth adding that these saws are only suitable for plywood. For the kind of plywood that guitars are made of, for example.
For particleboard, metal and other materials it is better to use a bigger jigsaw.
And in general, if you just need to cut plywood into pieces, squares or rectangles, take a five or ten millimeter saw.
No curves, just a straight road.
How to saw with a hand jigsaw ?
The question seems to be an ordinary one, but on the other hand, there are a couple of difficult points.
The first thing to remember if you do decide to go the way of torture and opted for a saw a couple of millimeters, prepare for nine laps.
And if Dante’s were all different, then your circles will be the closer to the ninth, the hotter. To avoid exploding like Vesuvius and covering Pompeii with lava, buy twenty of them. You’re gonna need it.
We have plywood! We have a jigsaw! There’s nothing easier than to take it and saw.
All you have to do is saw. As they used to say in one famous movie, “Saw, Shura, saw”. That’s right, saw, my dears!
It does not take long to cut a board in half. But if you want to saw something, like a pattern or a groove, it will take much more time.
The most annoying thing in this case is that a file of a different size won’t fit. In order to saw, another size is bad. With this one you can at least make normal bends and curves.
In order to make, for example, a smooth angle, you need to slowly drive the jigsaw up and down, turning the saw blade in the direction you need.
You have to take all the pressure off, and saw lightly, in one place. Otherwise you risk getting the notch in the wrong place. You’ll ruin your work as a consequence.
On the case. should, again, be stocked with a mountain of patience. It will take you more than one day to saw something with the file. It’s better to get another one. Or to avoid changing saws one after another, buy two jigsaws. This will be much more comfortable for you.
How to saw Particle board with a jigsaw?
If you are going to figure out how to saw chipboard with a jigsaw, the answer is one thing. tedious.
In addition, you will definitely need to pick up a different size saw. And in general, it does not matter what size the saw is. What matters is the size of its teeth. The bigger the teeth, the faster you can saw.
But there is a significant risk of splinters and chips, which you can “cut” in the process, which, of course, spoil the material. The smaller the teeth, the longer you have to saw, but the work, in the end, will be better and neater.
And in general, it all depends on the person. You can make a masterpiece with wide teeth, or you can make a masterpiece with small ones that you flush down the toilet.
How to saw straight with a jigsaw, or why the jigsaw is crooked?
Try to answer your own question. If you have already tried to saw, and this is probably the case, you have seen how the blade can suddenly go somewhere sideways, making an incision in the wrong place.
After that the sadness will pierce you through: you will have to do everything all over again, because what you have done is a complete failure. But don’t despair. We will teach you how to saw straight.
To begin with, as it is written in the instruction to the tool, it is necessary to fix the working blade of the saw firmly between the lugs of the jigsaw.
The saw should end up being taut between one and the second arc. First insert the saw and fix it by one ear, so that the other end goes completely under the other ear (so that the edge is not too small).
You will have to change it right away, and this is not comical. In general, squeeze the arcs to each other, then twist the desired ear and voila! The jigsaw is ready for use.
Before you start check how the saw stands, try jerking it with your finger. If everything is “iron” and firm. it is done correctly.
Yes, yes, it is very similar, but one interesting activity, but still you need to concentrate at this point. Your eyes should be watching the inclination of the blade. It’s the tilt that affects the trimmer blade.
You tilt it just a little bit, and lo and behold, the trimmer blade goes sideways. Misalignment. Right? Right.
Why the jigsaw is crooked
Jigsaws were originally designed to cut circles and patterns. Not all models have a straight-sawing function. The price of such a tool is many times higher.
You can also make a straight cut with an ordinary jigsaw. To do this, you should use the ruler, which should come with. In order to control the sawing process more easily, you need to lower the speed.
Beginner masters often face a problem: the jigsaw leads sideways when sawing, and the sawing turns out at an angle. To cope with this, it is necessary to study in detail the process of correct and even sawing.
There are several reasons for an uneven saw:
One of the causes of crooked sawing can be too thick material. As a rule, thinner wood is easier and easier to cut. The jigsaw may have poor mechanics, in which case it needs to be replaced. You can check the quality of the jigsaw by moving it from side to side. If it dangles, then it is a cheap tool for rough work. To get an acceptable result, you should saw with a reserve, and the edges should be decorated with a hand router.
Another effective way to learn how to saw evenly with the jigsaw is to draw not one trimmer line on the workpiece, but two parallel lines. This way the cut is smoother.
Some recommend using the pendulum function. The jigsaw does not need to be pressed. it should go by itself. You can try to change modes.
How to Saw Patterns?
The most difficult, but beautiful is artistic sawing patterns. To create an ornament it is necessary to transfer the stencil to the plywood. To make a stencil, use wattman, paper, or leftover wallpaper. Large elements of furniture can be placed on a piece of cotton or wallpaper, for small elements will do a simple sheet of A4. On the sheet with a pencil to create a drawing or take ready-made, then you need to duplicate it with a brighter pencil or felt tip pen to be easier to transfer an image on the wooden workpiece. In order to make a pattern or ornament with a hand and electric jigsaw, you need to
How to Cut Perfect Circles using Jigsaw Machine
- draw or find on the Internet the pattern that you will translate and cut out;
- transfer this pattern to the workpiece;
- saw out the pattern. large elements can be made with an electric jigsaw, small elements only with a hand jigsaw;
- Remove the remnants of paper, if you glued the stencil to the plywood;
- process the edges;
- clean the workpiece of dust and shavings;
- varnish, stain or paint.
There are the following options for transferring the pattern to the workpiece:
- simple drawings can be drawn with an awl, and then connect the lines with a pencil;
- You can use tracing paper;
- glue or double-sided adhesive tape on the plywood, and remove the remaining paper after the work.
Artistic jigsaw carving involves preparation and skills that require patience and diligence in learning. Start with simple patterns, gradually complicating the schemes. Openwork is very graceful and beautiful, and is also an inexhaustible space for creativity and imagination. Figured carving will require more work with a hand jigsaw than with an electric jigsaw, as mentioned above. The hand jigsaw allows you to make small elements in the pattern
Particular attention should be paid to the corners, which can cause cracking or chipping of the corner
How to work with an electric jigsaw: features and rules
Depending on the type of material, the rules for making the cut are slightly different. And, to avoid mistakes, you need to learn how to work with an electric jigsaw in this or that case.
How to cut metal
Metal should be cut with a fine-toothed file. For finer and softer material like copper or aluminum, you may want to set the RPM higher. Optimal is considered to be more than 750 W. And to reduce the friction force, you should periodically drip oil during work.
Important! When cutting sheet metal, it is best to place plywood underneath to reduce vibration.
How to cut wood, chipboard, plywood
The widest assortment of saws is available for cutting these materials. But they must be used as intended. To set the number of strokes you should be guided by the maximum values of the tool.
For cutting in this case you need saw blades with coarse teeth from 2 to 6 mm. The harder the job, the smaller their size. A straight cut can be made at high RPM, while a shaped cut can be made at lower RPM.
Having mastered the basic principles of how to work properly with an electric jigsaw on wood, plywood and particle board, not only an adult but also a child can cope with such a task.
How to cut a metal tile
In this case, the greatest difficulty is the profile of metal. And, in order to properly make the cut, it is recommended to fix a sheet of material between the bars on both sides. This prevents vibration and creates a certain gap for comfortable work.
Important! In order not to spoil tile surface during the cut it is necessary to wrap the cloth around the bottom of the tool.
How to cut plexiglass, plastic
The same saws are good for cutting this material as for metal. Set the pendulum stroke to a minimum or disable it completely. To process plastic, plexiglass should be at minimum speed.
How to cut ceramic, porcelain tile
When cutting these types of materials should use a saw with an abrasive edge. In this case the pendulum stroke should be turned off, and the working process should be performed at maximum speed. To cut ceramic and porcelain stoneware, you should rarely use a jigsaw, as these saws quickly deteriorate and need to be replaced.
How to saw laminate flooring
When cutting this material, the only difficulty is that chipping occurs along the edge. To avoid it, it is necessary to use a jigsaw with different types of teeth. And in doing so, do not cut from the face but from the inside.
Popular breakdowns, how to avoid them and safety rules
It is important not only to know how to saw with a jigsaw without chipping and smoothly, but also to try to avoid the causes that can lead to a breakdown of the electric tool.
Most often it is the motor that fails in electric jigsaws. The causes of failure may be few. the rotor burned out, the stator, the notch on the shaft worn out. To avoid rotor burnout, you should buy a tool that has enough power to perform all the required tasks. For example, if you often need to saw large thicknesses of workpieces, an electric jigsaw with a power of 0.4 kW is not enough, because the motor cannot hold the load and will burn out. Besides, it can be caused by insufficiently high voltage.
It is not advisable to frequently set the tool at reduced speed, because the winding may burn out due to lack of cooling and high currents. The notch on the shaft is liable to wear due to the constant impact loads on the jigsaw stem, and the impact loads occur due to the wrong choice of jigsaws. For this reason, it is always worth following the recommendations when choosing a saw blade.
Owners of such tools sometimes find that the start button malfunctions. Pressing causes the circuit to close and the motor to start, but if there is metal dust in the housing, the normal operation of the trigger can be impaired. A special vacuum cleaner (but not a household vacuum cleaner) can be used to remove the dust from the tool during operation. Even wear and tear on the tracks, which conduct the current, can lead to button failure. It must be said that this wear process is quite long.
What to do when there are problems with accuracy
Observing the following recommendations helps to avoid the most common mistakes.
Homemade Jigsaw Table Machine || DIY Jigsaw Table
- The main requirement is that the material to be machined must be securely fastened. Cutting must also be comfortable for the operator.
- It is better to use guide rails if there is much doubt that a person can do the job. For example, a block of wood would be an excellent guide when making a straight cut. It is simply fastened along the marking. Much more difficult when the shape of the future product is quite complex. Then the use of templates is recommended. Otherwise, the speed of work will have to be reduced, so that the result will be more accurate.
- Sawing problems are one of the most common sawing problems. There is a chance of chipping, blunting. It is better to inspect the device, if it is noticeable that the tool is strongly sideways.
- If there are jerks, there is a chance that the kerf will go sideways. Other tool failures lead to loss of accuracy. It is recommended to start fixing such problems immediately, on the spot.
- The skill of the doer also affects the accuracy of the final work.
Features of working with hand tools
Manual tool to work more difficult, but it is this jigsaw perfectly rescues the master in cases where you need to urgently make a furniture workpiece, and there is no electricity. Sawing with a hand jigsaw is labor-intensive enough. Securely clamp the workpiece to the workbench.
Material should be cut starting from the center. After sawing, the craftsman drills a hole in the material, and only after that does the saw cut begin. Do not saw too close to the contour, in order to avoid chipping.
Tip! The jigsaw should be as firmly fixed in the fixation area as possible.
Then measure the thickness of the nail you used and drill a hole of the same diameter in the center of the circle. Use the hole left by the compass needle as a template.
Now set the piece aside and take some thin plywood. Make a large crosshair mark in the upper left corner and drill the center with a thin drill bit. Make sure that your marks remain after you have drilled the hole.
Then make a second mark on the workpiece at a distance equal to the radius of your circle. Remember that the radius is half the diameter.
At the place of the last mark, drill a hole with a drill bit of such a diameter that the jigsaw blade will fit into the resulting hole with a small gap.
Now move on to the part with the circle drawn. Drill the initial hole with a drill larger than the jigsaw blade. Try to drill so that the hole touches the line marked with the compass.
Now it’s time to put the workpiece and the template together. Securely fasten the workpiece to a solid surface. Insert a nail through both center holes in the workpiece and template, then align the starting holes on the circumference.
Now we need to attach the jigsaw to the jigsaw pivot template. I use a favorite secret for this purpose: double-sided duct tape. It’s easy to find at any hardware store. Apply the tape to the rotary template and insert the jigsaw blade into the initial hole. Once you have everything set up correctly, press the design against the sticky tape for a few seconds.
Finally it’s time to make the cut. Keep the jigsaw at full speed all the time, feeding forward at medium force. Do not worry about the tape coming off, trust me, it will not happen.
Assembling the model steam locomotive
Once the material is prepared and the drawing is printed, you should begin the process of transferring the diagram to the workpiece. When doing this you need to take into account some rules of work. Many home craftsmen tend to translate the drawing on the plywood only using a copy and pencil. However, you can also use “Black Tape”. When you select this tool, the drawing is glued to the workpiece. Then the diagram is washed off the plywood with water, so that only the marking lines are left.
Then holes can be made in the parts of the future locomotive. Parts of the steam locomotive have groove pieces that are sawed from the inside. To make such elements, you should make holes in them with a hand drill or an awl. The holes should be not less than 1 mm in diameter. To avoid damaging the table top, put a plank under the workpiece when you make the holes.
Now you can saw parts. Take your time when sawing. The basic rule is to hold the jigsaw at right angles to the workpiece. All elements must be made smoothly, without any irregularities.
