How to saw a fireclay brick manually

How to cut fireclay bricks?

In the past, the question of cutting bricks did not arise, because it simply cut them with a pick. But now there are many construction tools that allow you to cut the blocks quickly and accurately.

During the cutting of this building material generates a lot of dust, so you should always use personal protective equipment: a respirator, cloth gloves, plastic goggles. According to safety rules, all electrical equipment must be grounded.

To get an accurate and straight cut, you need to put the necessary markings on the workpiece. With a pencil on the brick plane, use a ruler and an angle to draw the required dimension lines.

Cutting with a bolt cutter

Gasoline cutter is a special circular saw of independent type, equipped with a gasoline engine. This tool has a large mass and size, so for piece cutting ceramic bricks, it is not quite convenient. The cutting tools used in a chain saw can be of two kinds: discs or chains. Both types of tool are made with diamond coating.

The saw, equipped with a disk, resembles an angle grinder (only larger). The tool is similar to a chainsaw when the chain is installed. Due to its power, this saw is more suitable for cutting apertures and niches in masonry, as well as for demolition work. A chain saw can cut through walls of almost any thickness. A big plus is that this equipment is equipped with a forced water system in the cutting zone, which spares dust.

Cutting brick with an angle grinder

When doing small amount of work, cutting bricks with an angle grinder is a good solution. It is recommended to use angle grinders with power from 2 kW. But you should not use too powerful ones, because they are too bulky and heavy.

The most convenient for this are considered models, in which it is possible to use circles with a diameter of 23 cm. Smaller-diameter cutting tools are also suitable, but they are not very handy to use, because the. к. the disc does not travel over the entire thickness of the block. The workpiece will need to be turned over, which will affect the accuracy and quality of machining, significantly reducing productivity.

Technically, the way of cutting bricks with an angle grinder is not too difficult. But it is important to hold the tool correctly. It must have a reliable fixation, in which the cutting edge is strictly perpendicular to the surface to be processed. An inexperienced person is unlikely to immediately get to make an even cut, so you should first practice. Cutting edge width and tool play must be taken into account.

Specialists advise to use a special clamping frame for the angle grinder to improve the quality of cutting. In this fixture, the workpiece is fixed in an individual recess, and the angle grinder is rigidly fixed on the lever. The fixed attachment of a brick block makes it easy to cut along, across and at any angle. Read more at

Diamond cutting of bricks

In order to obtain an even cut surface without cracks and chips, diamond cutting of bricks is used. Performed such work with an angle grinder, but with a special diamond cutting tool. Any work involving such tools is considered diamond cutting. The difference between these cutting elements is that they have a diamond coating on the working part.

For cutting brick blocks it is better to use diamond discs, t. к. they are safe to work with and have a long service life. Using a diamond cutter with a more powerful professional tool is not economical.

Manual tile cutter

When there is a need to cut thin pieces of facing brick, you can use a handheld tile cutter. It will be handy for finishing work, when pieces of bricks with irregular sizes and angles may be needed.

Using tile cutting pliers

The pliers can be used to shape bricks into any shape: bevel, rounding, etc. Suitable for fine and meticulous work.

Cutting bricks with a special machine

A specialized tile cutting machine is very effective when carrying out large scale works. It allows you to do all manipulations as quickly and efficiently as possible. Minimal brick dust is emitted into the ambient air during machining with this special machine, thanks to its sprinkler system. But this equipment has a rather high price, so its use for single works is unprofitable.

Some craftsmen make machines with their own hands. For this purpose, they construct a structure from the base (support) and cutting equipment (circular saw, angle grinder). The equipment should be securely fastened and checked for proper functioning before beginning work.

Basic tools

The proven method of cutting the material is based on tapping the sharpened edge of the pick hammer on the surface of the brick, which is previously placed in the palm of your hand. This technique has not proven itself because it is considered ineffective. The product can easily break anywhere.

To cut refractory bricks, an angle grinder is used. In the operation of the angle grinder use a variety of discs:

Abrasive disc can cut concrete and brick. It wears down easily and diminishes in diameter very quickly. Cutting analogues are used for cutting wood, metal. The diamond disc can be used for extended periods of time.

Dust is emitted when cutting stones or bricks. Such work must be carried out safely, with goggles and a respirator.

Beforehand you need to make markings, and then cut chamotte brick.

In some cases the material is trimmed. To do this, experts recommend using an angle grinder with an abrasive wheel, which is used for work with stone.

How to cut at home?

It is rather expensive to buy a special machine only for masonry fireplace in your house. In this case, for cutting refractories, you can use an angle grinder with a segmented diamond disc mounted on it. Of course, such a cutting tool is not equipped with a device for supplying coolant.

This problem is easily solved if you pre-immerse the required number of bricks in a container of water for 20 minutes. After they will be as easy to handle, as with the coolant supply (no dust is guaranteed).

How is the cutting of bricks

During the cutting, in addition to special tools and devices, you will need an angle and a building pencil. In addition, any craftsman must understand and remember that this operation is extremely dusty. The use of a respirator and protective goggles during work is an urgent, even vital, necessity.

To ensure the accuracy of sawing bricks, it is desirable to make the necessary marking before cutting. To do this, a line for the saw trimmer is applied with a pencil. The sawing itself is carried out close to the line. If you cut strictly in line, you may end up with a smaller brick than necessary.

The question of how and what to saw bricks with is often decided on the basis of the amount of work to be done.

Using an angle grinder

Brick cutting with an angle grinder (angle grinder. angle grinder) is most often performed in the course of small-scale production. To do this, you need to choose a tool that can work with a wheel 230 mm. If the wheel has a smaller diameter, it will not be possible to cut the brick to its full thickness. Therefore, it will have to be turned over, and this reduces both productivity and quality of performance.

Used angle grinder must have a power of at least 2 kW. Overly powerful tool in the work is inconvenient, because it has a large size and weight.

In addition, when working with an angle grinder, you should choose the right disc for cutting bricks. The discs used to perform these operations come in two basic types:

The only advantage of the abrasive disk is its apparent cheapness. It really is only apparent, because such a blade wears out rather quickly and needs to be replaced often. over, it is quite dangerous to use an abrasive blade, because it deforms and breaks quite easily.

A diamond disc is preferred in the cutting process. It is based on strong steel. The blade is reliable, much less dangerous, has a constant diameter during operation. At the same time, diamond discs come in several types:

  • Conventional solid-edged discs. They are cheaper than other discs and give a better quality of cut. But they heat up a lot and wear out faster than others;
  • Segmented, whose cutting edge is divided into individual areas by radial cuts. This disc design ensures a well ventilated cutting zone and good drainage of sludge. Segmented blades are useful for dry cutting;
  • Turbid edged discs. This edge is provided with a toothed surface, has high rigidity and strength. Such discs are the most durable and convenient for wet and dry cutting.

To ensure the best quality of cuts with an angle grinder is recommended to use a special device, called a frame for the angle grinder. With such a bed, the angle grinder can be fixed on a special lever, and the brick. in a special device provided for this purpose. The base allows not only straight cuts, but also cuts bricks at an angle.

Cutting with a chain saw

Petrol cutter or, in other words, a special saw when cutting a piece of brick is quite uncomfortable, because this device is quite significant weight and large size.

If the gasoline cutter has a disk, then it resembles an angle grinder, which has a powerful gasoline engine. If a chain cutter uses a chain as a cutting tool, it is very similar to a chainsaw in appearance. The chain of the gasoline cutter, like the wheel, is made in accordance with special technology and is equipped with a diamond coating.

Brick cutting saw is particularly useful when making apertures in brick walls or when demolishing them. The great advantage of such saws is that almost every one of them has a forced water supply. This fact allows for greater comfort in such dusty work as sawing bricks.

Cutting bricks with a special machine

A brick cutting machine is a device that includes:

  • a solid metal frame;
  • A motor with a drive;
  • diamond disc;
  • A system for clamping the workpiece;
  • sprinkler system that virtually eliminates dust formation.

The decision to buy a brick-cutting machine makes it possible to:

  • perform work at high speed;
  • perform all sawing operations with a high level of accuracy, resulting in a seam between the joints obtained as a result of cutting elements is barely distinguishable;
  • Significantly increase operator safety by minimizing the dust generation that accompanies the brick cutting process.

However, the price of a brick cutting machine is such that its purchase can be considered justified only when it comes to large volumes or when it is used by specialists who are constantly engaged in this type of activity.

Brick cutting with this machine is quite easy. And all the stages of the operations performed are always described in detail in the manufacturer’s instructions. As a rule, the sequence of operations with this equipment is as follows:

  • The necessary marking is made on the brick;
  • the workpiece is fixed at the required angle;
  • the cutting head is brought to the place of cutting;
  • The rotation is started and its speed is set;
  • The cutting tool moves smoothly and smoothly to make the cut.

A great convenience when working is that the operator, when sawing, stands in such a way that the cutting wheel moves towards him. This makes the markings clearly visible, so you can cut the brick correctly.

A water-cooled, angled brick-cutting machine is a technically complex device that can be source of increased danger. This is why all work with it should be carried out in strict accordance with the safety instructions. The electric motor of the machine operating under voltage of 380 or 220 V must be earthed safely. Only the types and sizes of cutting blades to be used as specified in the operator’s manual are to be utilized. All necessary personal protective equipment must be worn by the operator.

Brick cutting and all about it

Not everyone has a machine for cutting bricks. Small businesses and individuals don’t have the extensive technical capabilities in the job as large. You have to do a lot of manual work. If it is construction, it is not profitable for private brigades or single specialists to invest in expensive equipment. They use the experience that allows them to perform the work qualitatively and on time and do everything themselves. Today we will tell you what to cut bricks with and how to do it correctly.

Brick cutting options

Cutting different bricks is a task that builders face every day. Cutting bricks with an angle grinder is the most common way to do this work. But not always everyone can do it. After all, everyone has faced the issue of poor quality cutting, or rapid failure of the wheel. The thing is that you have to do everything according to certain rules and choose the right tool.

  • For example for making fireplaces and stoves, sometimes the work should be done accurately enough, and here it is better to do the work with a diamond wheel. After all, then you will get accuracy;
  • Just as accurate work is needed when making a cut in the face of masonry. This is especially important in Bavarian masonry. For a standard common brick is quite suitable any circle.

Working with blanks

If it is cutting concrete bricks, then it is necessary to have an angle grinder as powerful as possible, because there will be a heavy load and with little power, the equipment will quickly fall into disrepair.

  • To cut the brick you will need an angle grinder with a cutting blade diameter of 230 mm. If you use a smaller element, it will not be possible to cut to the end. The brick will have to be turned over, which is not good for the results. And the cut is not as straight as you would like it to be.
  • For brick, you need a powerful angle grinder, at least 2 kW. The tool with more power, as well as suitable, but very powerful machines weigh a lot and are quite cumbersome, it is not convenient to work with them, people quickly get tired. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the choice of a working tool.
  • To work the cut you need a 125 mm wheel.

Types of cutting blade

Stone cutting blades are of two kinds: abrasive, diamond. If you compare the advantages of both, the first is attractive only for its low cost.

Note: The cheapness of the abrasive elements, sometimes translates into high costs. Especially if there is a large amount of work to be done, for the simple reason that it wears out quickly and has to be replaced often. Diamond cutting of bricks is more accurate.

  • Another reason why the abrasive wheel is inconvenient is that its diameter decreases rapidly as it is worn down during the work, which means that you can only fully cut through the brick at first.
  • The quality and service life of the abrasive wheel depends largely on the manufacturer. To understand what kind of sample is in front of you, pay attention to its thickness (2, 3 to 3 mm), then check the double reinforcement, because the work with abrasive parts quite dangerous, they quickly deform and collapse.
  • Given the above, it is worth giving preference to the diamond analogue. In the process of cutting, it is preserved in diameter, as it has a solid base of high quality steel. Diamond wheel can “survive” dozens of their abrasive counterparts, and the likelihood that it will break during operation is almost zero.

Varieties of abrasive disc

Brick cutting price will directly depend on the cost of the wheel. But you should not especially save on this, it is better to give preference to proven brands. The discs are quite different in their price range:

  • One of the cheapest options is considered a circle for cutting bricks with a solid edge, but it has disadvantages. During operation, such a circle is quite strongly heated, as a result, emergency wear and tear can occur. Avoid possible overheating of the cutting blade by taking regular breaks. Usually such samples do not last long, but the undeniable advantage is the ability to make high-quality cuts: no burrs, the stone does not crumble.
  • The segmented blade is the most frequently used. There are cuts in the cutting edge, which can easily evacuate sludge and ventilate the place of treatment. In dry cutting, segmented blades are the best, because if water is used, cutting performance can deteriorate as the kerf becomes blocked with sludge.
  • Brick cutting discs with a turbocharged edge rank first in terms of cutting performance. The toothed surface gives the disc additional rigidity and makes it more robust. Circles of this type can be used for dry cutting, as well as for wet cutting. The spent material slides across the surface like a spiral, is easily removed and does not affect the quality of the cut. Not only bricks can be cut with the discs but also different stones.

Working with an angle grinder

Cutting a brick of stone begins with a marking. You will need an ordinary angle and a pencil.

Attention: When you start work, you need to make adjustments to the thickness of the cutting disc and the luff settings on the tool spindle. If this is not taken into account, then deviations from the specified size of the brick to be cut can vary from 1, 5 to 2 mm.

Cutting bricks with an angle grinder is not as easy as it may seem at first glance. It requires specific skills, e.g. it is necessary to hold the disc properly in relation to the surface: strictly vertically. An inexperienced worker tool “walks” on the weight, which is sure to affect the quality of work. If you have to work with an angle grinder for the first time, it is better to pre-train on unnecessary bricks. This will allow you to gain the necessary experience and not to spoil in the future quality building material.

How and what to cut a brick?

During any construction work related to masonry, without cutting bricks can not do without. When building walls, stoves, fireplaces, tiling and other masonry work may need a block of irregular shape or irregular size.

Some craftsmen make machines with their own hands. For this purpose, they build a structure consisting of a bed (support) and cutting equipment (circular saw, angle grinder). The equipment should be securely fastened and before starting work, check that it is in good working order.

Brick varieties

Bricks have been used in construction since ancient times. It has an enviable strength and durability. There are quite a few types of bricks, depending on the material from which it is made, as well as what it is planned to build with it (walls, stoves, etc.).).

Red brick

Classic bricks, made from special varieties of clay and fired in a kiln at high temperature, called red for its color. It is widely used in various fields of construction and in the construction of individual houses. Material can be cut at home with several tools, allowing it to do so with a high level of precision. The cutting tool is often a diamond wheel. The appearance of the final building largely depends on what you cut with.

Facing hand-formed bricks

The distinctive feature of hand cut bricks is their unusual and attractive appearance. Used for facing works. However, it is quite expensive, so in order to save money practiced cutting hand-formed bricks in half along the length of the block. This cuts the material in half. Cutting is done with a diamond tool.

How to saw or cut a brick

The need to adjust the size of bricks occurs in almost all types of work with this material. To obtain a high-quality result and minimize labor-intensive, it is recommended to use mechanized methods of cutting, which will be discussed below.

Subtleties of using a circular saw

Today, the price of bricks is set quite moderate, due to which it has found widespread use in almost all sectors of construction. Stationary saw is used mainly to work with timber, to cut bricks you must replace the usual disk installed on it with an abrasive version that has fiberglass reinforcement. such components are sold in hardware stores.

  • It is recommended to cut bricks in the fresh air to protect yourself from the inevitably generated dust;
  • Mandatory element of equipment is protective goggles. there will fly splinters;
  • A respirator or at least a cotton-gauze bandage should be purchased to protect the respiratory system.

PART 1: making fire bricks.clay

It is necessary to install the facing brick so that it “sits” as tightly as possible. 70 mm is the minimum allowable distance from the edge of the disk to the table, while you should not take too large disks, either. it will bend and interfere with the work. The size of the cut is set with the help of the limiting rail, which is pressed tight against the workpiece.

An overview of the capabilities of an angle grinder (angle grinder)

Special discs are used for cutting and the device must be equipped with a protective cover. Always carry out a preliminary test by letting the machine idle for one minute. The supply cord must be drawn as far away as possible so that it does not come into contact with moving parts. Hold the angle grinder with both hands and release it only after the disc has come to a complete stop.

Since bricks and dry mixes are key building components, a cutting procedure may be required even when erecting small structures. Dust is always formed, so as when using a saw, it is worth to get a respirator, unprofessional use of water jets is not recommended, as in this case increases the risk of injury and equipment failure.

  • The operator should stand clear of the point at which the machine is to move if a blowback occurs. Be aware that if you run the tool away from you, the backfire will cause the tool to bounce off in your direction;
  • The machine is a highly dangerous device and its use requires the utmost care and caution. You should not cut bricks while under the influence of alcohol or if you are morbidly weak.

Kickback is the main risk factor; it occurs as the tool rebounds due to jamming in the thickness of the brick. This is why the angle grinder involves ensuring a well-rounded and precisely coordinated operation.

Tool cutting

The work will go much faster, more accurately and qualitatively if you use a brick-cutting tool. His choice is not too extensive: usually for this purpose use an angle grinder ( angle grinder), a gasoline cutter or a special machine for cutting bricks.

Without a construction angle and a pencil for marking you can not do without in these cases, too. In addition, you will need personal protective equipment, since the cutting process is accompanied by the formation of large amounts of dust and small splinters. These are gloves, goggles and a respiratory mask.

angle grinder

What to saw bricks with if you need small amounts of unusual stones?

For this purpose, it is best to use an angle grinder, which is popularly called an angle grinder. In contrast to the equipment, which will be discussed below, this tool is almost every home master.

Advice from. An angle grinder with a power of about 2 kW is recommended. A less powerful tool may not cope with the task, and too powerful is difficult to work.

There are two types of brick cutting discs that can be installed on the machine:

    Abrasive. inexpensive, but also not too practical. It rubs off quickly and can deform or crack when you cut, affecting the quality of the cut and the safety of the craftsman.

In any case, the optimal diameter of a disc is 23 cm. The smaller wheel will not cut through the brick to its full thickness, so it will have to be turned over in the process. And too big circles are not so convenient to work with.

Diamond discs, in turn, are differentiated by the type of edge and are available:

fireclay, brick
  • Continuous-edged. The cheapest of the counterparts, they give a flat surface in the cut. But they become hot during cutting and wear out sooner.
  • With serrated turbine edge. serrated in a spiral pattern to keep dust and other debris well away from the work area. Suitable for wet and dry cutting, they have the longest service life and the best cutting performance.
  • With a segmented edge. In such discs, kerfs are made along the edge, dividing the working plane into separate sections. The area of the cut while working with such a disc is constantly ventilated, so it heats up more slowly. But when cutting wet, there is a risk of sticking waste in the slots, so it is mainly used for dry cutting.

What you cut bricks with, and which saw blade to use. that’s for you to decide. Now you know about the features of any cutting attachment.

The only thing you need to remember is not to saw precisely along the marked line, but to move away from it a little so that the marking remains “in the body” of the part you need. Otherwise, due to the backlash of the tool and the thickness of the cutting part of the disk, it will be less than the required size.

Holding the angle grinder by weight, it is difficult to make a quality cut. It is better to fix both it and the brick in the clamping base. With its help, you can do a neat cut not only along or across the brick, but also at any angle.

A special bed for the angle grinder will make the work easier

It is very important not to forget about safety while performing such work.

The instructions require the following points:

fireclay, brick

It is important to hold the power tool with both hands so that it cannot break free and injure you or others when you hit it back. This requirement will also ensure a more precise cut.

When working, a secure footing and a good grip are very important

  • The power supply cable must be kept as far away from the working area as possible to prevent it from being cut or wound up on the disc, with all the adverse effects that this can have.
  • Only allow the angle grinder to leave the machine in hand and place it on the ground or other surfaces after the disc has come to a complete halt.
  • The cutting wheel must always be covered with the blade guard. Do not use an angle grinder without a hood

Brick cutting machine

Special-purpose brick cutters are expensive and it does not make sense to buy these for one-off jobs. This sophisticated equipment is designed for those whose work involves masonry work.

It consists of the following assemblies and elements:

  • The metal bed;
  • Power unit with electric motor and diamond wheel;
  • Brick or stone clamping system;
  • Most models are also equipped with a system of water supply into the sawing area.

This equipment allows you to quickly and accurately make cuts of any complexity. The sawmill operator can always see and control the cutting process.

A sprinkler system minimizes the amount of dust emitted into the air, making the work as comfortable and safe as possible.

How to cut a brick with this machine?

  • It is necessary to apply a marking and set in the working area, fixing in the right position;
  • The cutting part of the tool is lowered to the working area and oriented to the marking;
  • Then turn on the motor and adjust the speed, and then perform the cutting. In the photo. the process of sawing bricks on the machine

Sometimes there is a need not to cut individual bricks, but to cut through various niches, door and window openings in masonry. In such cases, the most effective tool will be a chainsaw, with which the diamond cutting of brick walls.

Having a lot of weight and size, it is not convenient for piecework, but indispensable for sawing masonry and demolition work.

A chainsaw is essentially a circular saw with a gasoline engine, the cutting tool in which can be a disk or a diamond-coated chain. Saw with a disk outwardly reminiscent of a large angle grinder, and with a chain. a chain saw.

What do you use to cut bricks?

Hi there. That it is done by angle grinder and so it is clear But it is too much dust, etc. About tile machines also know, but to buy a machine because of the 15-20 bricks as it is not hunting What else can be a solid brick to saw? Maybe someone has used a saber saw? Or a jigsaw

No, you need a flat saw, and then sharpen it again with what?? a bolt cutter?

He might have been sawing.Yes, it’s a bit expensive.

What does that mean?? And how does it cut without splintering?? evenly?

Enough said quarrelsome question: What can be used to saw bricks without much dust NEVER saw them with a saber? YES, I can buy myself a saber (and Bosch and makita and milka) and saws for it! then come in handy at the cottage for me all this! It’s important for me to saw all this without getting dust all over it!

Rasimovich. a lot of information is good, but you need to know how to use it. Have you ever wondered why the side handle has up to five attachment points?? Have you ever seen a furrow sawyer?? Read, look and think more.

What is your full brick? It may be that the blade above will not be enough for one. If the dust is so disturbing, and there is no vacuum cleaner and no street, then soak the bricks in a basin of water for a few hours, and then saw with an angle grinder.

Ferrari. a dust cover, a vacuum cleaner and a breeze from the back.

I can buy a saber (Bosch, Makita, Milka) with a saber? YES, I can buy myself a saber (and Bosch and Makita and Milka) and saws to it! Then I’ll need it all at the cottage! it is important for me to saw it all without fucking up the dust!

buy a saber. it is a beautiful thing. A working man could use one. The ceramic brick blades should be used: the ones that used to be laid. will not last long. They’ve got tiny bits on them. and a special blade will last a long time
