Patriot grass trimmers are a shining example of American lawn and garden toolmaking excellence
A huge role on the efficiency and durability of gasoline trimmer for grass plays oil, which protects the details of the cylinder and piston group from rapid deterioration.
In order for the lawnmower to please its owner trouble-free operation requires a competent approach to maintenance. Currently, it is customary to distinguish between two main types of engine according to the number of work cycles:
Principle of operation of two- and four-stroke engines
- two-stroke motors, where oil is added directly to the fuel tank;
- Four-stroke engines with a separate oil reservoir. An exception in this category is the STIHL 4-MIX motor, which runs on a petrol-oil mix, but has four strokes.
Nevertheless, the majority of trimmers presented in our market are equipped with the power units working on the mix which has been preliminary filled in the fuel tank.
At present the Patriot company offers a wide range of gasoline trimmers. The following products are considered the most popular.
Patriot PT 3355
This type of equipment is considered lightweight, it is usually used for eliminating small amounts of weeds, mowing lawns, leveling plants around trees, mowing grass in hard-to-reach areas.
The main distinguishing features of this lawnmower variant are enlarged piston stroke, chrome cylinder, good antivibration system.
This garden-type tool is an amateur model. It is characterized by low weight, but high reliability and good traction capabilities. Mower can be used for high-quality mowing of low-growing wild weeds, small lawns, elimination of young shoots. The feature of the machine can be called the possibility of its use in conjunction with universal mowing heads. This grass trimmer can also be equipped with a plastic blade and a three-blade forged blade. Patriot 3055 has a capacity of 1, 3 l / s, while it weighs 6.1 kg.
Running in and out of the chainsaw at the factory
Running-in conditionally divided into two types: household, held the owner of chainsaws after purchase and factory, which is a tool after manufacture and assembly at the factory-manufacturer.
The chain saw is running in at the factory. during this period the piston group is running in and all chain saw performance is monitored by the manufacturer. High-priced chainsaws tend to have chrome-plated pistons for longer life and better resistance to wear.
Oil and gasoline: the specifics of making fuel
Two-stroke engines on various chainsaws do not run on pure gasoline, but on a mixture of motor oil and gasoline. If your tool owner’s manual does not specify the exact ratio of gasoline to oil, prepare the mixture in a 25:1 ratio; by default, use AI-92 gasoline and air-cooled two-stroke engine oil, such as Oleo-Mac Prosint 2T, STIHL HP, Vitals Semisynthetic, Champion JASO FD or others.
Use a 40:1 or 50:1 ratio during the first running-in phase, that is, reduce the proportion of oil in the mixture if the owner’s manual does not specify how much oil and gasoline to use. Do not use low-quality waste oil, substitute oils, diesel fuel or any homemade substitutes for the running-in period and further operation of your chain saw. Use of low-quality lubricants can lead to rapid failure of the chainsaw engine and its saw part.
Properly mixed fuel should not be stored for more than a month in the gas tank or for more than two months in the can. Do not prepare a large amount of fuel, it is better to prepare a fresh mixture before using the tool.
Getting ready for the first start
Preparing for the first start-up is done by visual inspection of the tool, checking that all parts of the chainsaw are correctly assembled and installed.
The first start of the chain saw is done according to this schematic diagram:
- After making the fuel mix, pour it into the tank;
- pull back the brake handle, putting the chain brake in the off position;
- open the choke;
- the ignition is turned on;
- Hold the chainsaw by the handle with one hand and pull the starter cord with the other;
- When the engine is running, you should press the rev button and wait for the saw to reach full throttle, then release until the saw is running at idle speed.
Adjusting the carburetor
Sooner or later, carburetor adjustment will be necessary for the stable operation of the chainsaw
Please note that adjustment of the carburetor, while the saw is under warranty, is performed by the service center specialists
After starting the saw, use the adjustment screws to adjust the carburetor.
Location of the carburetor adjustment screws.
Priority for carburetor adjustment:
- After starting, turn the screws L and H as far as they will go and then unscrew each of the screws a turn and a half in the opposite direction;
- Next, give the chainsaw about 5-10 minutes to work;
- The idle speed is set with the screw T;
- If the adjustment is correct, the chain will not turn on the bar when idling.
Advice on the first run-in phase
At the initial stage of the running-in of the chainsaw adhere to the following rules:
- The bar and the chain must always be lubricated with a special saw lubricant;
- It is forbidden to run the saw in its entirety at idle speed, because oil must flow to the saw’s cutting parts when the engine is running, and this does not happen when the saw is idling;
- When the first 5-7 hours are done, drain the remaining fuel mixture from the chainsaw and mix a fresh mixture;
- try not to overload the tool during the first 4-5 refuelings, work in a moderate mode, also refrain from sawing logs with a diameter over 40 cm.
Peculiarities of running in of Chinese chainsaws
In general, the running-in process of Chinese saws is not much different from the running-in of brand-name chainsaws of well-known manufacturers, especially if we are talking about the new generation of saws, made in modern Chinese factories.
When running-in the Chinese chainsaw we advise to pay attention to:
- oil quality (do not use cheap oils and lubricants, Chinese chainsaws are sensitive to cheap fuel and lubricants);
- it is undesirable to adjust the carburetor by yourself even after the warranty expires;
- if some detail can be replaced, replace it without any doubts, Chinese chain saws are hard to repair and installing a new spare part will save you the time you need to work with the chainsaw.
We recommend watching the video from the owners of chain saws of similar models to get more insight into the nuances of the Chinese chain saws.
Removing and lubricating the upper shaft of the grass trimmer
First remove the lower part of the boom from the coupling sleeve, and then disconnect the coupling from the upper part of the boom (here we are talking about the coupling that connects the two halves of the boom).
PRORAB-8406 grass trimmer with disconnected coupling and lower part of the boom
Now the most interesting: on some videos, like on this one, holding with pincers the shaft coupling sticking out of the upper part of the rod from the bottom, they knock it out of the rod with pincers together with the roller bearing (here we mean the coupling connecting the upper and the lower shafts). Some chain saws with a collapsible shaft, like the one in the video, have a coupling between the upper and lower shafts pressed into a roller bearing.
With our PRORAB-8406 trimmer and others like it, it won’t work. They do not have a roller bearing, and the coupling sleeve is an extension of the upper rod shaft. There is a retaining ring at the top of this shaft that needs to be removed first.
Where the top of the rod attaches to the clutch housing
- Unscrew the central screw completely. It secures the upper part of the upper shaft and fits into the drilled hole in it. Loosen the side clamping screws and remove the rod from the clutch clutch housing.
- Pull the shaft out the top of the boom toward you as much as play allows to reach the retaining ring and remove it. A special puller may be needed. Remove the circlip.
Retaining ring on the brushcutter’s upper shaft
Installing LED’s on my Zero Turn
- Without the circlip, the upper shaft can be easily removed from the opposite side of the shaft. Lubricate it, remembering the splines in the sleeves on the shaft and the clutch shaft.
- Install the lubricated shaft in place at the top of the rod and secure it with a retaining ring. Insert the rod into the hole in the clutch cover and align the hole on the rod with the tapped hole of the fixing screw.
- Screw in the fixing screw and secure the upper part of the grass trimmer shaft with side screws in the clutch cover.
- Clean the boom coupling from debris and install from the bottom on top of the boom.
I do not have a puller, and to remove the retaining ring I use two large paper clips. You have to straighten them out beforehand, make half rings on one side for your fingers, and bend small hooks on the other.
In many videos masters recommend to use grease “Shrus-4”, this is the best option. In its absence, to lubricate the shaft of the boom lawnmower can use “Lithol-24”, which is oriented to temperatures up to 130 ° C. And here is solidol, which has worse lubricating properties and works at temperatures up to 70 ° C, is not recommended.
However, if you urgently need to lubricate your brushcutter’s shaft, and you don’t have any suitable lubricants, then grease or even normal engine oil is better than nothing at all.

Preparing the right fuel mixture
Before you start running in a new lawn mower engine, you also need to mix the fuel right. As it is known for two-stroke engines it is made of special two-stroke oil and gasoline taken in certain ratios. You can find the proportions in the instruction manual supplied with the tool or on the label of the lubricant. The manual will also tell you the recommended type of fuel, as well as the recommended type of engine oil.
Prepare fuel in small quantities, enough for one mowing. Use special plastic jerrycans for the fuel or separate glass or metal pots. It is best to use a medical syringe to fill the oil.
When getting ready to run in a new lawn mower many people have problems with the fuel mix. And the reason for this is that there is a discrepancy in the tool manufacturer’s instructions and in the engine oil manufacturer’s instructions. The first ones recommend 1:25. The others recommend 1:50. Who to trust?? What to do?
According to the experts, if the manufacturers write the proportion 1:25 or 1:30 in the instructions to trimmer, it’s most likely a cheap tool with poor cooling, or the manufacturer doesn’t know what oil the consumer will add. But here it should be understood that the excess of lubricant does not affect the performance of the grass trimmer in the best way. Excess oil does not burn out completely when the engine is running. It cokes and clogs the cylinder and piston.
What to do in this situation when running in a new tool? It is ideal to buy the oil that the mower manufacturer recommends. In the case of running-in engines, when there is no possibility to buy the recommended oil, it is better to buy a good Husqvarna two-stroke oil for the gasoline-driven tools of the same name. It’s not cheap, but it lasts for a long time. It is necessary to mix it as it is written in the instruction on the can.
Remember, it is better to use the oil manufacturer’s recommended oil ratio. But whether the proportion that is written on the mower is suitable, it is better to find out by experimenting. If the proportion recommended by the manufacturer of the trimmer for grass, the engine drips oil and you can see the leakage, then the proportion must increase.
The result of a proper running-in of the gasoline grass trimmer
After you have run the lawnmower according to the instructions, as a result we will get a ready to work tool. Of course, it is best not only to read the steps, but also to see the running in on the video from the experts. The result of doing the right thing will be:
- trouble-free operation of the power tool for a long time
- quality startup of the device and stability of power supply;
- The absence of unforeseen repairs of the grass trimmer after a quality run-in;
- no overheating.
In this regard, the initial processing of the Chinese grass trimmer is an integral part of the quality work of the device, which can work flawlessly, using blades for petrol mowers or cutting lines of different diameters when processing areas available for purchase at the special store “Mower for grass”.
Preparing for the first start of the lawnmower
Before making the first start of the lawnmower, it is necessary to carry out a number of sequential actions:
We recommend performing them not only when buying a new grass trimmer, but also when preparing the old tool for the new season after storage.
Basic rules and tricks for using a brushcutter
To get good mowing results and long service life, it is important to use and maintain your brushcutter properly. Even if it is your first time holding a brushcutter in your hands, you will quickly learn the correct mowing technique. The machine is simply rotated in a semi-circle from right to left, moving evenly forward.
Here are some basic techniques and tricks to help you mow even large areas quickly and with better results.
The basic mowing technique is the most commonly used.
Because the cutting attachment turns counterclockwise, it is more common in working practice to mow from right to left.The advantage of this method is that the grass cuttings fall on an already mowed surface.
Large, flat surfaces. the right technique.
Large, flat surfaces are best mowed in a square pattern. The area is squared, after which you always work along the outside towards the middle.
Basic technique in case of tall grass.
If the grass is very high or the weeds are very stubborn, it is best to mow in both directions: first you cut the higher part of the mowed grass in one cut to the right, and in the opposite direction (to the left) the lower part. The grass cuttings remain on the left side even in this case.
Along the slope. mow after mow.
You make perfect progress by mowing in a straight line, especially on a slope: cut a swath parallel to the slope, then go back to the mowed area. Then mow the next higher swath. Here too the grass cuttings are always placed on top of the cut surface.
Skilfully avoid obstacles. mow playfully.
To mow against trees or shrubs without damaging knots or trunks, it is ideal to use a thread cutter. If many plants are spaced closely together, mowing is suggested before mowing. To do this, use your brushcutter’s blade guard as a guide. Always lead it specifically along a tree trunk or shrub, and move around them. The trunk remains protected, the area around the trunk will be mowed.
Working in a gas trimmer
Mowing is most often used in a lawn mower (gas grass trimmer). Failure. This is engine operation at low rpm, with no load. You have to start the mower first and let it run. It is best to mow the first one with a fishing line, because mowing grass provides less load on the engine than when working with hay or bushes.
There is no need to work out all the time when you first start the engine. After idling, it’s best to mow your lawn for 10-15 minutes, then turn the machine off and let it cool down a bit. Use the brushcutter carefully and without sudden movements to avoid hitting hard objects (stones). A rock bump may adversely affect the operation of components that are not yet running. In some cases, play, noise and hum appear during operation. This can be easily avoided if the grass trimmer is started correctly.
