Working principle of “KPS-4” cultivator

The operator lowers the tines into the working position after entering the field via the hydraulic system. Because the tines are positioned at a certain crumbling angle, as well as under the influence of the massive weight of the machine and its speed, they enter the soil to the required depth. The blades of the tines cut and crush the stalks and roots of the weeds.

The soil from the upper soil layer rises upward on the tines and falls from them, crumbling into small lumps that are evenly distributed on the surface of the field, leveling it. In order to intensify this effect of breaking the soil into small lumps and leveling the surface, the “KPS-4” cultivator is equipped with tooth harrows.

The working depth is set on the cultivator by the support wheels. When the wheels are raised the working depth is increased and vice versa. Lifting and lowering of the wheels is carried out by means of the adjustment mechanism. The cultivator tools. tines. are arranged in a staggered arrangement. The tips of the rear tines should overlap the front tine tips by 7 cm on each side in order to kill the root system of the weeds. Uniform working depth can be adjusted by adjusting the spring on the folding boom. If the spring is compressed, the share depth is increased. Several trailed cultivators can be hitched together to form a large wide implement for use with 3 to 5 tractor classes. Principle of operation and maintenance

Always set and adjust the cultivator before starting to use it. If this is not its primary operation, it is necessary to clean the device from dirt and organic fragments. If necessary, defective parts must be replaced with new ones. The flat wheels are inflated and the bearings are additionally lubricated.


The machine has to be adjusted on a flat surface. Under the wheels during this process it is necessary to put a padding, which is 2 or 3 centimetres shallower than the depth by which the wheels are lowered. It is important to keep both wheels at the same height for accurate adjustment and further operation. A 350 millimeter thick plate is also placed underneath, to which is added the value used for the wheel spacers. In the next step the working units are adjusted to the desired working depth. At this time, the moving device is prepared, after which the two components are combined.

The actual working process of the KPS steam cultivator is as follows: the moving device with the attached cultivator drives into the cultivated area. The frame is lowered in such a way that the tines penetrate the soil to the desired depth. During this process the stems and roots of the weeds are cut by the sharp part of the tines.

The clods that are on the surface are pushed upward by the tines and then broken down into smaller fragments as they fall down. This creates an even layer of earth on the surface. Sometimes for more intensive soil crumbling, the general scheme is supplemented with the operation of tooth harrows placed on the cultivator. Incidentally, the size of how deep the tines plunge, you can change with the support wheels. When the latter are lifted, the impact deepens, and when they are lowered, it decreases. Whether or not the machining is uniform is determined by interacting with the spring on the boom. Compressing it increases the working depth, and relaxing it decreases the working depth.

It is important to note that the cultivation itself is first carried out across the main tillage, and then perpendicular to the previous pass. The device generally moves by performing shuttle movements. After finishing the treatment of the main passes, it is necessary to pay attention and treat the turning areas of the plot.


Maintenance and repair

Before setting off, set the machine down on a firm, level surface to allow the operator to adjust the working elements. Under the wheels, wooden or metal strips 20-30 mm lower than the expected working depth are placed. The difference simulates the driving depth of the rollers. Do not use spacers of different heights under the left and right side wheels. A 350 mm thick beam is placed underneath the frame, adding the working depth and subtracting the wheels’ drawdown into the ground.

Then the position of the frame is adjusted using screw mechanisms. The correct positioning of the long tine tips on the tine plates is good with the tine plates resting on the base plate. Correcting the position of the shortened and single sided ridges is then possible by repositioning the working axle.

Maintenance involves regular cleaning of the machine from buildup of dirt that can cause corrosion of the steel elements. Rusted areas of the frame are cleaned to metal, primed and painted. If the tool is bent, it can be straightened out; if the original configuration cannot be restored, it is recommended to replace the assemblies. Hydraulic lines are checked visually, in case of leakage replacement of hoses or sealing rings is required. Cylinder rods must not be soiled as to cause damage to the sleeves.

If any bends or tears are detected in welded seams on frame, cultivator operation is to be stopped. Have repairs repaired by a specialist workshop fitted with measuring equipment. Improper repair may cause misalignment of parts and poor quality welds that will fail when the proper force is applied.

The hinges of the harrow mounting have been additionally reinforced and metal strips with enlarged cross section have been used. For towing it is used a tractor with 2 tons of pulling force, equipped with a hydraulic system with an outlet on the rear part of the body and a spool valve.

KPS-6 cultivator is based on a metal frame with side wheels equipped with a position adjustment mechanism. Soil is tilled with harrow and additional pipe for leveling the soil layer. Optional device for flaking grass stalks after harvesting. Optionally available with a strengthened design to enable tillage of hard or virgin soil (Y version).

Frame mounted hydraulic cylinders, hoses with quick couplings are routed to trailed implement.
