Most clients do not pay attention to the conditions under which this procedure is performed, whether all the requirements for sterilization and disinfection of working instruments are followed. A negligent attitude to this issue can have a negative impact on a woman’s health. Untreated manicure tools are the carriers of dangerous diseases, which are transmitted from sick to healthy client.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISINFECTING TREATMENT OF TOOLS
Disinfection of manicure tools always includes four steps: disinfection, cleaning, sterilization and storage. To learn more about why disinfecting your manicure tools is a complicated procedure with several steps, see the Important to Know appendix.
We offer you three simple and obvious ways of disinfection. budget, classic and professional.
- The budget way can be used at home and requires minimal expenses for the purchase of equipment, but still allows you to perform almost the entire cycle of disinfection of the tools.
- The classic method is used in salons, for professional services. Also it does not require considerable expenses for the equipment, but the use of glass sperm (ball) sterilizer in this way has a number of considerable disadvantages.
- The professional way in this case the instruments are decontaminated almost according to the medical regime. Applied equipment is a little more expensive, but this treatment can fully comply with all sanitary requirements for the disinfection of manicure tools. Your customers will certainly appreciate this care for their health!
Take note! This method of decontamination of manicure tools can not be recommended as a complete. It can be used if a glasperlene or dry-heat sterilizer is not available. Nevertheless, it can be applied at home, it is much better than neglecting disinfection altogether.
Pour 0.5 liter of water into the box for the disinfection of manicure tools. Add your disinfectant as recommended by the manufacturer. You can use a measuring cup or a simple disposable syringe to dispense the disinfectant. You should always add the disinfectant to the water, but not the other way around. Dip your used instruments into the solution and allow to soak for 15 minutes.
Rinse each instrument with a brush (or detergent) under running water. After that the tool should be thoroughly wiped.
Place the instruments in the sterilization bag. Sterilize the instruments in a conventional oven at 180°C for 15 minutes. Do not exceed the indicated temperature! Even a brief excess of temperature over 180°C could result in the instruments becoming unstable and unusable.
Do not remove the instruments from the kraft bags until they are ready for use. In a sealed Kraft bag, the instruments remain sterile for up to 30 days.
Please note with this method the instruments are stored before being sterilized! Store the instruments which have been disinfected and disinfected in the UV-Camera prior to use. Immediately before use, the instruments are sterilized in a glasperlene sterilizer. So:
Step 1. Disinfection combined with ultrasonic bath cleaning
When using an ultrasound bath, disinfection and cleaning in the water stage can be combined. Remove the instrument tray from the tub and fill the tub with water until it is empty. The capacity of the bath is approx. 0,7 l. Attention, water temperature should be at least 18°C! Add disinfectant. You can use a measuring jug or a simple disposable syringe for dosing the disinfectant.
Place the instruments in the tray next to each other and place the tray into the tub. The instruments must be completely covered with the disinfectant solution. Run the ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes. After the cleaning cycle is complete, remove the tray with the instruments from the tub and continue with step 2.
If you do not have an ultrasound bath, you can disinfect in a box for disinfection of manicure tools with subsequent cleaning, as described in steps 1 and 2.
Step 2. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry thoroughly
After the ultrasound treatment rinse the instruments with clean water and dry them thoroughly. Then carefully inspect the instruments. Must be free of blood, skin and other debris, scratches and dents.
Store the instruments in the ultraviolet light chamber immediately before the next use. If the use of the UV-Camera is not possible, the instruments can be stored and transported in any sealed box
Remove the instruments from the UV-Camera and place them in the dishwasher immediately before use. Sterilizer must be preheated for at least 30 minutes. Sterilization at 250°C, for 20 seconds. The instruments are then ready for use. Read more details on the use of the Glasperlene Sterilizer here.
Step 1. Disinfection combined with ultrasound bath presterilization
When using an ultrasound bath it is possible to combine disinfection and cleaning in the water phase. Remove the instrument tray from the tub and fill the tub to the brim with water. Bath capacity approx. 0.7 l. Attention, water temperature should be at least 18°C! Add the disinfectant. Use a measuring cup or a simple disposable syringe for dosing the disinfectant.
Place the instruments on the tray and put the tray in the bath tub. The instruments should be completely covered with disinfectant solution. Run the ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes. When the cleaning cycle is complete remove the tray with the instruments from the tub and continue with Step 2.
Step 2. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry

After the ultrasound treatment, the instruments should be rinsed with clean water and dried thoroughly. Then carefully inspect the instruments. Make sure they are clean and free of blood, skin and other debris, scratches, and dents.
Place instruments in self-adhesive kraft sterilization bags and seal them. Sterilize the instruments in a dry-heat oven at 180°C for one hour. Do not exceed specified temperature and exposure time! Even a brief excess of temperature above 180°C can lead to loss of strength and value of the instruments.
Do not remove the sterilized instruments from the kraft bags until they are ready for use. Recommended for storage in the ultraviolet chamber or, if not available, in a hermetically sealed box. The instruments in a sealed Kraft bag remain sterile for up to 30 days.
APPENDIX 1. Advantages and disadvantages of the Glasperlene Sterilizers
Glasperlene sterilizers, like the Macrostop Sterilizer, allow the sterilization of the instruments in only 15-20 seconds. The quartz balls in this apparatus are heated up to 250°C and guarantee the destruction of all pathogenic microorganisms. The outer part of the glasperlene sterilizer is made of high quality plastic, the inner bulb is made of heat-resistant metal. These inexpensive and widespread devices have a number of disadvantages. Let’s list the most important ones:
- Only the working part is sterilized, the handles are not sterilized
- Partial and rapid heating to high temperatures can cause deformation of the instruments
- The continuous contact of the instruments with the quartz balls causes a gradual blunting of the cutting edges
- The inability to handle large instruments. they simply do not fit in the appliance
- The balls in the sterilizer need to be replaced at least once every six months
Dry cabinets do not have most of these disadvantages.
APPLICATION It is necessary to know
Why manicure instruments should be disinfected and sterilized? First of all, because while doing manicure, especially trimming, there are almost always small wounds and traumas. Viruses and bacteria can thus enter the blood. The sterilization aspect is especially important in beauty salons, where a large flow of customers work with the same tools for each one of them. Thus, if the client or the craftsman has a blood borne infection, in case of inadequate sterilization of the instruments there is a risk of transmission of infection. The proper disinfection of manicure tools significantly reduces the chance of contracting diseases, as innocuous enough, such as fungus, and very serious, such as HIV, hepatitis and others.
Disinfect the instrument immediately after use. Simply place the used instrument in a tub with disinfectant solution. Untreated instruments should not be in the interior.
Touch contaminated instruments only with gloves or a special set of tweezers.
Disinfect the instruments first and only then wash them. Do not skip the disinfection step. This first of all protects the person doing the disinfecting from the risk of transmitting the infection.
Ultrasonic baths, ultraviolet boxes do not sterilize the tools! They are designed for disinfection and storage. Sterilize the instruments only in glass sterilizers, dry kilns, autoclaves. The sterilization step not only eliminates bacteria and viruses, but also spores.
Help. Kraft bags
In professional salons, this is the traditional packaging. Cutters or other tools are placed here before sterilization, and processed already packed.
This prevents contact of the sterile nozzle with the open air, and the band that has changed color after heat or steam exposure indicates the sterility of the milling nozzle. Of course, you should not sterilize bagged cutters in the oven at home, but it is very convenient to store the tool prepared for work in them.
How to sterilize tools for manicure
Everyone knows that the manicure equipment should be obligatory disinfected. But, coming to the salon, many people forget to ask the master about it. At home, however, only a few people handle their files and tweezers, confident that their personal tools do not require it. In fact, there are germs everywhere and the consequences of dirty tools at home and after unknown clients in the salon can be terrible. To avoid trouble, how to sterilize tools for manicure, everyone should know.
Preparation for the hardware manicure
Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to disinfect not only all the tools and attachments, but also to treat the nails and skin. You can do all this with special antiseptic solutions or ordinary medical alcohol. Thirty minutes before treatment, hands and feet are washed with soap and water and thoroughly dried. Then proceed to degrease the nails and remove the old nail polish with a special liquid. The cuticle is then covered with the softening composition and waited for it to take effect.
How to dilute Optimax for the disinfection of manicure tools
To dilute Optimax for disinfection of manicure tools, you need to take 970 ml of water and 30 ml of concentrate. The treatment will be complete with the resulting 3% solution if you soak metal accessories in it for 15 minutes. You can make the composition less concentrated, for example, 2%. Then for 980 ml of water take 20 ml of Optimax. But the exposure time will already be 30 minutes.
Similarly dilute and use the newer tool Optimax Prof. It contains additional components, so it is quite reliable for the treatment of manicure tools, too.
