Cutters for the power tiller: selection, operation, self-made
A tiller for a power tiller is one of the most common types of additional equipment for soil treatment. It is a set of special blades fixed on the axle. With their help, you can quickly and easily get rid of weeds, make ground cultivation on the site. In order to choose the best type of cutter for your power tiller, you should classify them a little.
According to the location of the cutters there are lateral and hinged. Side-mounted on either side of a single-axle tractor, powered by the wheel drive shafts. In fact, in this arrangement, these cutters replace the wheels and drive the machinery.
The second type. the power tiller, working from the PTO, is located at the back of the machine and does not participate in the movement. Motoblocs of the brands Celina, Neva MB-1 and MB-2, MTZ have exactly such a device of mills.
According to the design of the knives, there are two types of cutters. saber-shaped (active, standard) and the so-called goosefoot.
Active milling cutters
An active cutter consists of a set of four powerful knives set at 90° to each other. There can be two or more such sets on an axis. The number of additional cutters, as well as the size of their blades depends directly on the power unit performance. The blades of this cutter have a curved band, bent alternately in different directions. Their design and durability allows to safely process virgin land, as well as areas where there are stones and roots.
The second type of cutter is the goosefoot cutter. It takes its name from the unusual shape of its cutting elements, which resemble the claws of a goose. They are triangle-shaped and located on the edges of the tines. Number of cutting elements and size of this module also depend on power of a power tiller. cutting edges and supports means better quality of work.
This cutter is capable of working heavy virgin and clay soils, but in areas with increased vegetation and roots, the product is likely to clog.
Sabre-shaped cutter and its assembly
Before assembling a tiller on a single axle tractor, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the concept of a power tiller. It is a welded frame made of pipe with a diameter of at least 23 mm, with a fuel tank and engine mounted on it. They are attached to the frame with brackets. The engine is otherwise known as the power pack. It is equipped with a gearbox and a clutch mechanism. Each brand of cultivator has its own power unit with different capacity.
The cutter is most often sabre-shaped. This is one of the most popular power packs nowadays and is even called the standard power pack. The effectiveness of the sabre blades has been proven over many years of use on a wide variety of soils. The mounting of such a unit on a single-axle tractor allows many jobs to be done. The blades are made from carbon steel for high durability. The cutter design is collapsible. Each cutter is thermally hardened using high-frequency currents in the manufacturing process.
How the tillers for power tillers are assembled? Each cutter consists of 2 units. Each of them is equipped with 12 blades. The unit consists of 3 components. Each unit is 4 legs arranged at right angles (picture ). In relation to each other they are located at an angle of 30 °. Each blade is made of 5 mm thick steel. They are attached to the stand, which is made from 63×40 mm angle. The other end of the rack is welded to the flange so that the 4 knives are joined together. All the parts of the cutter connect to each other with bolts with washers and flanges. This design is very reliable. It is capable of withstanding quite high loads. If you plan to use the cultivator all the time, it’s better to use a prefabricated tiller.
Some machines have trouble mounting the tiller to a single axle tractor. That’s why it’s recommended to do this job with two people. The assembly is usually performed on specially made wooden trestles about 50 cm high. They help get the job done faster. the single-axle tractor carefully rests on the coulter and leans at an angle of about 45°. Under the handlebars of the handlebars are placed. In this position wheels are taken off the power tiller and cutters are installed (image ). On the outer ends on the right and left side you must install the plates on the tillers for the power tiller. They improve the machine’s performance and make it run smoother and more stable.
Getting your power tiller ready for land cultivation
For soil cultivation on a single axle tractor instead of transport wheels it is necessary to install a set of cutters on the left and right sides, as shown in photo 2 (cutters are installed on the right side). One set of cutters includes eight blades. This number and position of the blades on the axle gives the most effective result in tillage.
Please note that when mounting the blades, the cutting part should point forward, in the direction of travel of the power tiller. Please note that the working part of the blade should not be sharp, because in this case the single-axle tractor will not move forward, and will constantly bury itself in the ground, because the cutters will not loosen the soil, but will simply cut it

Picture 5 shows the coulter. What is it and what is it for?? The coulter is a strip with vertical holes that we can use to adjust the depth of the tiller when cultivating the field.
The coulter is fitted into the clevis and fastened using a bush and cotter pins in the second hole (counting from the bottom of the coulter). When installing the coulter in this way the depth of the tiller on the power tiller will be about 20 cm. this depth is quite enough for good tillage of the ground for further planting of cultivated plants on the plot.
To change the working depth of the soil, the coulter can be attached to the coulter bar as follows:
- To increase the tillage depth, lower the coulter down and attach it to the clevis through the upper holes.
- To reduce the depth of cultivation, lift the coulter upwards and attach it to the shackle through the holes below.
Cutters and coulter are installed and the single axle tractor is ready to work. To determine the quality of the cutter’s depth adjustment, you must perform a test run of the power tiller on the plot and make sure that the single-axle tractor works without load during cultivation and the depth of tillage meets our requirements.
Self-made tillers for a power tiller
Manufacturers offer different versions of tillers for power tillers. You can use one set of cutters or buy two different types of devices, changing them depending on the soil conditions.
Some craftsmen prefer to use homemade products, which, if properly assembled, will be no worse than the factory ones.
The main advantage of making a soil cutter yourself is that it can be adjusted to the specific features of the site.
Scheme of the tiller assembly
Photo 1 clearly shows the design, features of the cutter. The diagram is not complicated, but you should read it carefully before you start using the equipment.
The cutter design includes elements such as:
- The rotor axle, which can be of different lengths (it can be single or divided into two parts, t. е. Cutter will be assembled from 2 parts);
- short rotary axis;
- the so-called finger, equipped with a locking device;
- right and left blades;
- Nuts, bolts, washers, which are necessary for fixing the whole structure.
Direction of rotation. counterclockwise. Soil cutters of any type are self-sharpening tools, there is no need to apply additional sharpening. Do not use sharpening unnecessarily, it can spoil the design.
During the installation of the cutter can be difficult, such work alone is not recommended.
Special X-shaped trestle made of wood, the height of which is about 50 cm, is used for assembly. This makes it quick and easy to put the wheels on the structure.
Before assembling the single-axle tractor should be carefully leaned on the coulter, then tilt it by about 45°. Wooden goatees are usually planks that are knocked together in the middle in an X-shaped position, put under the available handlebar handle. After that, the wheel of the motoblock is removed, the cutters of the selected size are put.
How to correctly assemble the tillers on a single axle tractor?
Assembling a tiller can cause some difficulties, especially if you do it for the first time and by yourself.
To begin with, you should familiarize yourself with the structure of the cutter.
The drawing below shows its main constituent elements:
- rotor axle (comes in different lengths, can be one-piece or split);
- pin with locking device;
- blades (right and left);
- elements of fixing the structure (nuts, washers and bolts).
Also remember to take into account the fact that the movement of the blades during work is counterclockwise. Be careful when assembling the module. any deviation in the design will cause the axle to be out of balance, and the unit will be skidded sideways when working.

About the elements
They are needed when cultivating the soil. Therefore, the quality of processing and the complexity of the procedure itself depend on the model: the load on the motor, ease of operation and labor intensity.
As a rule, the cutter is included with the power tiller. But this may not be enough. Sometimes you need to increase the depth or width of processing, so the device can be supplemented by other products. This solution also improves forward motion of the power tiller. This will also increase the service life of the machine.
If the soil is clay, then it is better to use two pairs of tillers. And even if the soil is light and has already been worked before, additional elements will not be an obstacle.
Depth adjustment is made possible by the variable coulter. It is a robust element that is vertically positioned in the hitch of the power tiller. The final loosening depth is influenced by the diameter of the tool.
Mounting the tillers on a single axle tractor
To install the tillers on a single-axle tractor, you should use special wooden trestles, the height of which should be about 50 cm. The machine must be supported on the coulter and tilted at an angle of 45 degrees. The wheels are then removed from it and the tines are put on. On the outer ends, special plates are installed on both sides, which make the course of the unit smoother and more stable.
All tile cutters are self-sharpening tools. Sharpening is not necessary for them, as it can only spoil the design. Only in some cases, if you have been using the tiller for a very long time and see that it has started to work the ground poorly, you can sharpen the blades.
