How to make a disc, propeller and leaf spudger for a power tiller with your own hands?
Crop cultivation maintains soil fertility, increases growing efficiency, and cuts fertilizer and irrigation costs. To gather a rich harvest of some vegetable plants, especially potatoes, without this procedure is impossible. But it is long and tedious to manually hoe. It’s faster and more economical to use a single-axle tractor with a tiller. You can make such a device yourself. Let’s consider what there are potato riders for a power tiller and how to make them with your own hands.
Hiller is a tool that can be used to till and cultivate soils of different size and complexity.
The nozzle is used to cultivate crops, loosen, dig over the ground, and control weeds. The implement is made of metal, is fitted with paddles or has rotating discs that are attached to the frame.
The attachment is installed on a single-axle tractor with special mounts. The attachment allows for different heights of hilling and depths of penetration into the ground. Along with loosening, the device performs the lifting of the soil to the desired level and aeration. Cultivation width, height and angle depend on the model.
Choosing a prototype
Cultivation in general is a kind of soil cultivation and is carried out most often by a conventional cultivator with interchangeable working tools. Potato mowing is an exception. So that potatoes form more large, nutritious tubers, its rows are made wide (0,5-0,6 m), and bushes are dipped high. This is why the potato mower is a specialized attachment. Another special case is the use on crops grown on narrow seedbeds. Active or passive?
In large-scale farming operations, the working parts are often operated by active packers, the working elements of which are driven by the PTO shaft of the tractor unit. Motor blocks and mini-tractors for smallholdings and small farms are available, but in practice it turns out that the performance and quality of work of an active tool increases slightly, but its cost and fuel consumption significantly increases, and the life of the motor is produced faster.
The reason. the engine. No mini-potatoes or tomatoes and never will be. we need edible ones. A mini tiller should turn the soil per meter of row as much as a large one; the same amount of energy is needed to do it. It is not a problem to take away 10 kilowatt for 5-hulled mower unit from 100 kilowatt diesel engine, but to give 2 kilowatt for one-hulled engine with 6-10 kilowatt will be on the limit of possibilities.
There is another significant circumstance. Tractor diesel engines have a special design, though only a specialist in engine construction can see it by eye. Their liter capacity is small, but the engines themselves are very rushed, with a soft external characteristic, so the withdrawal of power to the attached unit has little effect on specific fuel consumption in g/kWh. It is already difficult to put the same engine on a single axle tractor, because the required performance is obtained only with a sufficiently large liters of engine. But even if this obstacle can be overcome, the motor is still too expensive, heavy and bulky.
Large farms consume fuel by tons; individual private farms and small farms. by liters. But even here the engine on the tiller head needs to exert a uniform pulling force by itself to compensate for differences in the soil, e.g. by pulling the disc coulter.к. Processing errors are in any case unacceptable. That’s why these mini-agricultural machines are fitted with fuel-injected or carbureted engines, which are already voracious and designed for a walking speed of the machine, approx. walking speed. Thus it is possible to minimize the cost of mechanization as a whole, but the required for “painless” withdrawal of power external characteristics of the engine is no longer obtained: the engine is straining, burning an exorbitant amount of fuel and itself. That’s why hereinafter we will talk about passive breakers only (no power transfer directly to the implement), that put as little stress as possible on the tractive power source.
How to mount a single-axle tractor mounted on a single-axle tractor?
Setting and adjusting the potato perch to the tiller is not a very complicated procedure. Using bolts and washers, it is connected to the hitch. When working with a simple mower, you need to adjust its angle of operation and depth of plunge into the ground. The tilling depth of the planter is shallower than that of the plough, so you do not need to put the single-axle tractor on an elevated position to set it up. Simply adjust the bar vertically. The necessary angle of attack is dictated by how deep the rake will go into the ground in the working position. This depth should be about 15 cm.
If you notice during work that the rake is sinking too far into the ground, just tilt the bar forward. Otherwise, if the share does not go deep enough, the tine should be tilted backwards.
The setting and adjustment of the disc coulter is a little more complicated. First of all, the distance between the lower points of the pre-implement discs must be adjusted. This will be 40-70 cm, depending on the work to be done. Next, the angle of the discs should be adjusted in respect to the horizontal.
The settings of both discs must be identical, because otherwise the single axle tractor could start to drift sideways.
A simple model of a disc rocker to the tiller
To make the tool you need to choose the type of wings. Discs, or plowshares, are 1.5-2 mm thick steel sheets with bent bottom edges.
Important: The discs must be perfectly symmetrical. Otherwise the construction will “run” sideways, which will greatly complicate the work.
When implementing the construction it is possible to use discs that have been removed from a disc sower that has reached the end of its working life.

Connect the elements with each other, using bolt connection or by welding. Connect the discs with adjustable adapters. In addition to the discs, the main elements of the tool are: T-ring, screw turnbuckles and stanchions. turnbuckles are needed to adjust along the vertical axis of disc rotation. The tool is attached to the tiller via a beam and wings.
When making and assembling parts on the basis of the drawing it is important to provide for proportions and design of fixing. Two variants of tool manufacturing are possible: with fixed or variable width of wings. In the second method of arrangement, the distance between the discs can be changed by symmetrically rearranging the posts.

Provide plain bearings to make working with the tool easier. By installing bearings, rather than sliding bushings, you can increase the reliability of the product.
In the process of assembling the structure to attach the tool to the power harvester engage the hitch bracket without a ridge. To do this, the arm is attached to the bracket with a stopper and bolts with flat washers. Place the stopper inside the square tube and press it firmly against the outside surface of the tube.

The machine is ready for work. Working in first gear, by reducing the forward speed it is possible to increase the traction of the power tiller. If the wheels slip while tilling, they need to be paired.
About the machine
The mechanism of the disk mower for the power tiller consists of a leash, a pair of racks, discs and tensioning devices. Adjust the angle of attack of the parallel inclined discs. Comfortable use of the unit is ensured by proper installation of these discs: the distance between their lower circles should be equal to the distance between the rows. The desired diameter of the mower itself is 340-390 cm, its wheels are 75 cm and its width is up to 10 cm. This balance helps protect plants from mechanical damage.

If you are only planning to buy a power tiller, and it is necessary to plow potatoes, a manual plow trap with the possibility of conversion to a mechanical pull will do for you. In this case, the flexible rope strap is replaced by a rigid rake, and the ploughshare with wingspan up to 25 cm (you can’t pull more than that) is replaced by a lister or chisel ploughshare.
Here are some drawings of this kind of manual planter on the left side of the screen. This is a “half-handed” machine: it is suitable for pulling from the winch without modification. If the winch is powerful enough, a larger share can be used at once.
