During repair work and in the arrangement of the house or apartment, sometimes you need to cut a groove or nicely sharpen the face of the board. For this purpose it is not at all necessary to buy an expensive electric tool. You can make a hand router out of a drill with your own hands.

The principle of operation and transmission of torque to the spindle at the device will be identical. It will be enough to make a milling table for a drill, and you can use the device as a hand-held milling machine. The options for fixing the body of the tool can be very different, but the main thing is that there is no backlash and warping.

Please note, as a hand-held milling machine by no means can be used impact drill.

Basic steps

After sanding the round wooden blanks you need to drill holes in the center. For this it is best to use a crown of suitable diameter. Deburr the inner edges with sandpaper. The result should be two “bagels”.

On one of the wooden circles we make a marking and saw four pieces. In the resulting “protrusions” (not all, but only two) drill through holes and make the recess for countersunk holes. After that, we mark out a circle in half and saw it into two equal parts.

As the last step, we connect the two wooden “bagels” together by means of two wooden bars set vertically. Preliminary we make a marking and drill holes.

Machine from an old electric motor

Homemade milling machine, which quite successfully perform many technological operations, can be made without using an electric drill. In order to make such a device, you will need the following consumables and components:

  • Drive electric motor, which can be used as an electric motor from an old washing machine and other household appliances;
  • The chuck in which the cutting tool to be used will be fixed;
  • adapter, by means of which the drive motor shaft will be connected to the chuck;
  • sheets of chipboard or thick plywood for making the base and vertical guide of the homemade cutter.

Selecting for the homemade milling machine motor, keep in mind that the power of the latter must be in the range of 500-1100 W. The higher will be the power of the drive motor, the greater the depth will be possible to perform processing router.

Long bolts will have to be inserted into the holes drilled in the base (“sole”).

Then we proceed to the assembly: put the springs on the bolts, then install the top platform.

Main steps of the work

From plywood cut out the router support. Drill a hole in the center for the router. Then we saw off two wooden blocks of equal length. Attach it to the base with superglue.

From the back side of the base we drill holes, and for greater reliability, screw the studs with self-tapping screws.

In the next step, the moving base is cut out of plywood. On the sides it is necessary to saw grooves, so that it can move along the guide walls. Drill a hole in the center for a drill chuck.

The platform is attached to the uprights with wing bolts. Pre-drill holes in it and install the furniture nuts.

At the last step we install the drill, and fix it with two screws. Then the cutter is clamped in the chuck. The protrusion of the cutter can be adjusted by raising or lowering the table.

Homemade router has limitations on the materials that can be machined with it. Making cutters for their own needs, as a rule, is associated with working with steel of soft varieties. That is why such a homemade tool is able to cut wood quite effectively, but when processing harder materials, it quickly blunts.

In order to make their own milling tool, craftsmen use scraps of steel bars or fittings. If a rebar is used as a workpiece, its ribbed surface is smoothed with a lathe.

The technology of making a homemade wood mill from such a workpiece is as follows:

  • Half of the diameter is cut off from the cylindrical part of the workpiece, where the cutting part of the homemade tool will be formed.
  • A smooth transition is formed between the parts with different diameters.
  • Another quarter of the diameter is removed from the machined part of the workpiece, this part of the workpiece is also connected to the unprocessed part of the rod with a smooth transition.
  • The machined part of the workpiece is given a rectangular shape by cutting off its lower part. The thickness of the part of the workpiece in which the working part of the woodworking tool will be formed, should be 2-5 mm.

With a small thickness of the cutting part, the milling tool, made by hand, has a fairly low operating resource. To somewhat extend the life of such a wood router, the corner on the bottom of the tool opposite its cutting edge can be slightly rounded.

Self-made cutter can not immediately cope with a large volume of wood removed from the surface of the workpiece, so the processing is carried out in several runs.

What will be needed for manufacturing

In order to get to work, you need to prepare the following:

  • Sheet of thick plywood. Its thickness should be at least 12 mm. Instead of it, it is acceptable to take a board of chipboard.
  • The scraps left over from the boards.
  • A pencil to make a drawing.
  • Wooden bars.
  • Drill.
  • Drill bit.
  • Self-tapping screws for attaching parts. It is necessary to choose the ones that are 6-8 mm in size.

Here it is suggested to use wood for the base. However, the base can also be made in another way: from acrylic or metal.

To connect the parts, you can use furniture fittings: fasteners, guide mechanisms and similar parts.

Types of metal cutters for the drill

Thanks to the use of cutters, which are installed on an electric drill, you can process non-ferrous or ferrous metal, as well as products made of hardwood. There are several different kinds of special nozzles that can be used during milling:

  • Cylindrical. Used for removing the metal layer directly from the workpieces themselves.
  • Disc. Used in case of necessity to cut grooves or slots directly on metal surface.
  • Shaped.
  • End. Used when machining the face part of the workpiece.

For this purpose, plywood is often used, the thickness of which should not be less than 12 mm. Supporting elements can be made of four wooden bars. An important part of such a homemade device is a platform-restrictor, whose task is to ensure the correct position of the mill in relation to the machined surface. You can make the work platform from a sheet of chipboard or thick plywood by cutting out a piece of wood to the required size and rounding the corners. In the center of the landing strip a hole is drilled out, which is necessary for the exit of the wood cutter.

The drill itself is clamped to the support made of chipboard with the help of clamps.
