How to disassemble and remove the ratchet on a bicycle

A reversible screwdriver is a tool that consists of a handle with a rubber anti-slip coating, a switch that allows the tool to work in three modes, and a metal rod with a ratchet mechanism built into it.

Most models already have a set of bits of different shapes and configurations, designed for tightening/unscrewing screws of different sizes and shapes. The screwdriver and bits are made of chrome vanadium alloy, with a Rockwell hardness of 45-50.

The screwdriver operating principle is quite simple and consists in the following: a special “doggie” presses down on the toothed wheel with a spring and does not let it rotate in the opposite direction. This mechanism is called a ratchet because of its characteristic sound. Bit rotation direction is controlled by a switch that can be set in three positions: tightening, unscrewing and locking. By design, ratchets are subdivided into ring ratchets, which can rotate around a longitudinal axis, flag ratchets, which have a small lever, and slide ratchets, which are equipped with a key.

In the “twist off” position, the operating direction is clockwise, but if you try to turn the tool in the opposite direction, the ratchet mechanism takes over and shifts the tool to idle speed. The screwdriver handle can turn freely in either direction while the bit is held securely in position. the same thing happens with the “twist” switch mode, but with a clockwise restriction of the tip movement. In the “locking” position, the reversing tool becomes an ordinary screwdriver and any of the set directions of movement will work.

hereinafter, we will refer to the impact screwdriver as the rotary impact screwdriver, because this is the name we have used for the tool.

It is very easy to work with this tool. The mechanism provides a combined progressive and rotary force on the slot of the screw which is most effective for successfully unscrewing screws that fail to yield.

The purpose of

The range of applications for reversible ratchet screwdrivers is quite wide. They are used in construction and furniture assembly, for repairing cars, bicycles and motorcycles, as well as when working with electronic equipment and household items that have threaded joints. The tool has proven its worth for unscrewing oxidized, rusted and stuck fasteners, for test screwing of hardware, and for work in hard-to-reach places, where screws cannot be driven with a classical screwdriver.

Models in the flexible, T-handled or angled version are available in many varieties on the market. Special bits included in the delivery set enable the user to work on bolt joints and sockets, which greatly extends the range of application of the tool and makes it possible to replace a wrench. Thanks to the ratchet, the screwdriver can be used with just one hand, without interception. Especially useful if the screwed element needs to be held with the other hand.

Advantages and disadvantages

The popularity of reversible screwdrivers is due to a number of undeniable advantages of this tool over classic models.

disassemble, reversible, screwdriver, selection
  • the ability to work without removing the tip from the slot makes work much faster and more efficient.
  • All screwdriver operations can be performed with one hand without grasping. It puts less strain on the hand and causes no fatigue.
  • the accessory carrying case that comes with most models is divided into many different compartments, so that every bit, head, bit and extension has its own space. This is very convenient and makes it easy to find the right part when you need it.
  • Thanks to its many different bits, the ratchet screwdriver can replace an entire set of locksmith tools.
  • All reversible screwdrivers are fully compatible with commercially available bits, heads, and other attachments, allowing you to purchase the right bits as needed.
  • The handle of the tool is made of water- and dirt-repellent material with dielectric properties. This makes it possible to work with live parts. In addition, the handle is resistant to chemical compounds and acids, which makes it possible to use it in many aggressive environments. However, in prolonged contact with gasoline or solvent, the rubber layer can begin to break down.

Along with a lot of obvious advantages, the tool still has disadvantages. The following are some of the reasons for the ratchet’s quick failure and its low resistance to falls and impacts. When the hardware is frozen, this tool should not be struck, as the mechanism can simply break.

How to disassemble a ratchet screwdriver

A ratchet screwdriver is one of the most useful tools you can have in your tool kit. with a good selection of bits, this one device can take the place of a whole set of screwdrivers

And be even easier to use. it’s not an expensive item either, and one that only takes a couple of minutes to master the proper tip.

It is important to purchase different bits to fit your ratchet screwdriver. you will need flatheads, Phillips heads and square bits to ensure ” I will be able to handle any screw you encounter no matter what. Also, make sure you have a full range of sizes in all styles.

most of your bits will be double sided, with different tips on each side. to insert it correctly, grasp it between your thumb and forefinger and push it firmly into the hole on the screwdriver blade until it snaps into place. most ratchet screwdrivers have a magnet that holds the tip in place, but some others require that you rotate it until the screwdriver fits snugly against the tip.

To take some off the screwdriver, grasp it with your thumb and forefinger and pull sharply. In most cases it will come right out. when this is not the case, a common cause is sweat on the skin, causing the fingertips to lose their grip on the metal. Wipe your fingers and piece with a dry cloth and try again. then, once it is free, you can choose another tool to replace it.

The beauty of a ratchet screwdriver lies in the ratchet device itself. it means you don’t have to constantly stop and adjust the wrist position when placing the screw on the surface; the handle itself rotates instead. without this extra step the process is much faster and smoother with less wear and tear on the wrists.

Since it is not the first wrench in use and a couple of times a similar problem (during tightening it started to skip, work idle) has happened to it before. And this problem was solved by disassembly, cleaning and washing the inside of the ratchet, reassembly with subsequent lubrication of the mechanism. That’s all. After that simple procedure, the key worked like new.

But this time washing and cleaning did not work. The ratchet kept slipping. Careful inspection of the mechanism parts revealed traces of wear on the toothed roller and especially on the ratchets. Photo number 1 may not be clear, but you can still see the frayed doglegs teeth.

And, to my surprise, the seller, after listening to a sad story about how I lost my faithful helper, offered me not a new wrench, but a set to repair the old ratchet. Oh! In photos 2 and 3 you can see the original kit package and a set of parts that are included in it.
