How to cut a pipe evenly with an angle grinder without marking, by eye. Locksmith tricks
If you are a beginner in welding or metalwork, or just love and know how to work with metal, then our channel is just for you!
I will show you an interesting way to cut a round tube with an angle grinder. It’s an old locksmith’s trick, the pipe can be sawn off without marking, by eye and quite evenly.
First see how to make a normal, precise marking for cutting a round tube at 90 degrees.
Take a flexible strip of metal or a piece of paper. Wrap the entire circumference of the pipe and mark the end of the tape or paper with a pencil or marker. That’s it, now we take the tool and carefully guide it along this marking.
It’s pretty accurate. But if we don’t make this marking, is it possible to cut it off evenly?? At first glance it seems impossible to do it just by hand, it’s going to be crooked anyway. And no, there is a trick, look.
Here we have a piece of galvanized pipe with an outside diameter of 48 mm. We’re going to face this pipe. Like I said, we’re not going to do any markings, why do we need all this trouble?! And simply sawed off by eye.
When we bring an angle grinder with a rotating disc and touch it to the pipe, you get a picture like this.
We’re going to get a bunch of sparks coming right out from under the disk. And here on this stream of sparks we and we shall correct the angle grinder, namely a disk concerning a pipe that it was perpendicular. So we saw at right angles to the pipe.
The shear of sparks will not go exactly in a thin line, it will change its thickness depending on the position of the plunge disc in the metal. But at this stream of sparks we can always visually identify the center, the middle.
This stream of sparks, the middle of it, we need to put it at right angles to the pipe. Yes, you can’t do it to within a degree, but all the same, if you’re attentive and accurate, it’s not hard to keep this approximate right angle.
Let’s make a cut in the pipe, let’s go a little bit deeper, then let’s twist the pipe a little bit towards ourselves. And from this kerf on the pipe we start to move further with the disc. We also orient ourselves so that the flow of the spark is at a right angle. And so around the circle we have to saw off quite accurately. Look at these pictures of the circle kerf.
You got a pretty straight cut all around, check it out.
It’s precise enough. You can see it in the photo. We take an angle and check the whole circle. There are small deviations, but they are no more than 1-1.5 mm. Even with the markings, there’s a margin of error.
It’s a simple method, but it works and it’s very useful. This is of course interesting and unexpected for beginners, I want to see it in the format of video-as everything happened, and especially the cutting itself angular grinder. This video is on the channel, I downloaded it a week ago. Go to the channel itself and see.
Safety precautions when working with an angle grinder
This question is the most important. After all, if the rules of operation of the angle grinder are violated, you can get serious, sometimes incompatible with life injuries. Let’s look at the main ones that are mandatory.
- Disc size. Many believe that if a small angle grinder put a large disc, removing the protective casing, nothing bad will happen. The big angle grinder is more powerful, they say. This misconception is life-threatening. The fact that the small angle grinder speeds are much higher, and therefore the discs for them need other. When installing a large disc, the master will most likely not even have time to start working. the disc will fly apart when turned on, which in the absence of a protective cover will lead to deplorable results.
- Direction of rotation. Some “masters” do not like sparks flying under their feet when working. They unwrap the shroud, move the handle and get to work. This is what most often causes the disc to break when it hooks on a sharp edge. The angle grinder must rotate the disc “toward you” and not vice versa.
- Personal protective equipment. Wear safety glasses or face shield, gloves, mask or respirator. That will save you from burns, eye injuries, which, unfortunately, are not uncommon in this kind of work.
Cutting a cylindrical pipe at a 45º angle
With the help of an ordinary sheet of paper is performed diagonal marking of the pipe
How to use a paper template to mark a 45º cut
The resulting double folded triangle is divided into 2 parts, and, having wrapped it around the pipe, we fix the position with masking tape. The template must be positioned so that one edge of the base aligns with the other. Now we have 2 blanks of the desired diameter. Using scissors, round the top corner of both, fitting one to the other. All that remains is to put the template on the pipe and mark the place of the cut with chalk or a simple pencil.
All that remains is to carefully cut the metal along the marked line
Other tools for cutting plastic pipes
They are rarely used when no pipe cutter is handy:
- Angle grinder. for cutting pipes you will need a cutting disc for metal. The main point when working with an angle grinder is to precisely regulate the effort, too much pressure on the tool is not allowed.
- The electric jigsaw is the most convenient way in the absence of special scissors. There is a high chance of getting an oblique cut here, so the pipe has to be turned several times during operation to be more accurate.
It is categorically not recommended to cut pipes with this saw:
- The band saw. its blade moves too slow and if it is not sharp enough it can damage the inside diameter of the pipe and cause chipping and cracking.
- Circular saw. Because plastic pipes are flexible, pushing them into the machine often causes the pipe to shift and bump, which is dangerous for the person making the cut.
Methods for cutting metal products at an angle
Normal perpendicular cutting at 90°, with an angle grinder, is done quickly and well, if you do not neglect the advice of experts.
Many believe that if a large tool with a large powerful disk is used for sawing, then you can not make markings. Specialists do not recommend sawing without marking, because after cutting, the parts may not align.
Pay attention! Before you understand how to evenly cut a pipe with a large angle grinder, it is better to make a few marks, make sure that the calculations are accurate. After the wrong sawing of the profile or gas pipe will have to start over.
Features of cutting a cylindrical tube at 45
Most often, making a cut at a 45 degree angle is required when installing heating or plumbing systems. The main difficulty in carrying out the work is that after aligning the cut parts of the pipe should get a right angle of 90 degrees. To achieve the quality of the cutting process will help a simple way to prepare a homemade template:
- Prepare an ordinary white sheet of paper.
- Fold it diagonally.
- The protruding part of the sheet must be cut with scissors, so that when unfolded it turns out a square.
- The resulting triangle should be wrapped around the pipe so that the long side was parallel to the section.
The paper template is great for cutting metal pieces in the middle.
Halve the resulting triangle and divide it into two parts. Then the templates should be wrapped around the pipe, and secured with tape or duct tape. Templates should be arranged so that one edge of the base coincides with the other.
Use scissors to round the top corners of both templates. The resulting two blanks of the desired diameter should be put on the pipe, and mark the place of the cut with chalk or a pencil. The prepared marked part can be safely sawed off.
For small-diameter tubes that need to be cut close to the edge, the method of marking with a container of water is suitable. On a deep container, the desired angle of the cut is marked, then the end of the tube is placed in the water, and tilted to the marking. The fishing line for the trimmer contact with the liquid will become the mark for sawing.
How to mark the place of the cut at 45 on the profile pipe
Not everyone knows how to cut a profile pipe under 45 degrees with an angle grinder correctly and qualitatively. Experts recommend using an ordinary triangular ruler for marking a profile pipe with a square cross-section.
First, on one of the edges you should draw a straight line perpendicular to the side of the pipe. Then the workpiece should be rotated, and a slash mark should be made on the adjacent edge. It should run from the edge of the first strip at an angle of 45 degrees.
The product is then turned again, and a perpendicular line for the trimmer is drawn. On the fourth edge, you will only have to connect the previously drawn strips diagonally. Now you can begin to cut.
Additional information! Many experts believe that the best way to mark a profiled pipe is a tape measure. However, with this tool it is very difficult to do the job perfectly, the cut can turn out uneven. A school ruler will do the job much better.
How to make a 90-degree branch out of the pipe
The easiest option. find a reference book on the manufacture and installation of piping. It has manufacturing drawings with reference dimensions. For the manufacture will need to make a pattern of cardboard or a thick sheet of paper, trace them to the contour on the pipe, and then use an angle grinder or gas to cut parts and weld. Particular attention should be paid to the quality of seams, as it is much easier to podvarivat and check the product in the not yet assembled state, than then climb in the corners and look for leakage.
Pipes up to 100 mm in diameter bend on the pipe bender by heating, and do not usually need to make special fittings. Usually 3-4 segments are used for making a 90 degree angle. If the diameter of the pipe will be 100-159 mm, 3 segments are enough. If the diameter exceeds 159 mm, already 4 segments are used. Making 90-degree fittings on pipes with a diameter greater than 180 mm is possible with the use of 5 or more segments, so that the swirls of the flow were not as large.
How to hold an angle grinder correctly
Many people have an angle grinder, but most people don’t know how to use it correctly and how to hold it. It leads not only to defects in the work, but also to serious injuries. Angle grinder is a rather dangerous power tool. The circle should be installed with the drawing upwards and clamped by a special nut.
The person with the right hand holding the angle grinder by the handle with the right hand. The wheel must be on the left side of the machine and the protective hood must cover the wheel from above. Sparks are rotated so that while you are cutting, the sparks fly to the worker. If the angle grinder’s wheel jams and the angle grinder comes out of your hands, it will not go to the cutter, but to the opposite side.
Your left hand holds the machine by the handle, which you screw into a threaded hole in the housing. There are several there for special use cases, but the correct handle position is only the top one.
This position of the machine requires the use of protective equipment. To protect your eyes and exposed face, it is necessary to wear safety glasses or, better yet, a face mask. To protect exposed parts of the body from sparks and small splinters while cutting, you must wear a suit of thick material.
I say right away that if you are going to do plumbing or heating system of polypropylene or metal-plastic, it is better to buy a secateurs at once. It is not expensive, but it makes the job a lot easier.
In all other cases it is possible to use improvised means
At a right angle
To cut the pipe at a 90-degree angle, I suggest marking it before directly cutting it. For this you need not a marker or a pencil, as you might think, but a piece of paper or masking tape. I prefer the latter option because it sticks to the surface.
- Then I tape the pipe to the marking. It is important to do this so that the edges of the paper tape come together as precisely as possible. If it works, then you can be sure that the cut will be made correctly.
You can use Pipe Wrap instead of duct tape.
You have to secure the pipe carefully before cutting it.
To avoid jamming the cutting disk during the operation, the second end of the pipe should be left hanging, and the cut should start at the top of the pipe.
- After that, it remains to make the cut, using an angle grinder. It is necessary to make sure that the cutting disc went exactly along the edge of the masking tape, which you glued earlier.
If the pipe has a large diameter, you need to cut the wall itself in separate sectors, gradually turning the pipe the right side.
Big diameter pipes are cut in sectors.
Do a slightly different thing with a cast iron pipe, which can split if not cut correctly. In this case, I personally act as follows:
- The cut is made to the entire diameter of the piece;
- Then I take a chisel and tap the cut;
- This should cause the product to break along the indentation made by the disc.
Make an oblique cut
Now I will tell you how to cut the pipe at 45 degrees. In this case you can also use the crosscut.
- I take a square sheet of paper (the side of the square should be equal to the outer diameter of the pipe);
- I fold it diagonally;
- wrap it around the pipe and fasten it.
Marking the line of the cut with a sheet of paper folded on the diagonal.
In this case, if you make the cut at an oblique edge of the paper sheet, the end will have an angle of 45 degrees.
Another easy way to make a marking is to dip the pipe into a bucket of water at the required angle. In this case the wet edge will serve as a guide for the cut.
But it is best not to wisecrack, and use a conventional plier, which is precisely for such cases and is designed. Structurally, the device I mentioned looks like an inverted U-shape, the opposite slats of which have cuts at the right angle.
The pipe should be placed inside the jigsaw and cut at the right angle, placing the blade of the hacksaw in the appropriate grooves.
