Ignition modules and coils sometimes suffer breakdowns. When everything else is checked, the suspicion is. When they fail, one of two things usually happens. The obvious symptom is no spark. The cause of the problem may be in the trip tumblers. It is not difficult to check them. To do this, disconnect the wires from the module and then check the ignition. If the spark continues to appear after disconnecting, the switch needs to be replaced.
Problem Finding Algorithm
In all other cases, ignition troubleshooting begins at the end and in order. After each step, check the spark.
- Replace the old spark plug with a guaranteed working spark plug.

To speed up the return of the reel mechanism, manufacturers use a special steel starter return spring, which has excellent elasticity.
If the spring is broken, it is necessary to: remove the cage of the mechanism, pull out the spring by fixing the upper part of it with a finger and pulling slightly aside the handle of the starter. Then, wrap a new part, avoiding kinking and twisting the new spring element, then carefully fix the casing.
How to check a chainsaw ignition coil?
If after adjusting the necessary gap the chainsaw still does not start, then the coil itself is defective. To determine the exact cause of the failure, you will need to do the following steps:
- check the part with a device that measures the presence of the spark. for this purpose, the device should be connected in the gap of the electrical circuit between the high-voltage factory wire of the regular coil and the spark plug;
- Make resistance measurements of the original coil. this method is not often used, as the owner of the utility saw needs to know the exact resistance values of the coil in advance. In addition, in addition to the inductive coil, the ignition contains certain semiconductor elements that help to form the necessary high-voltage pulse. Problems in them can be determined only after preheating. To measure the resistance, it is necessary to disconnect the cap and armature wire from the coil. This may be difficult for an inexperienced chainsaw user, so this kind of check is best done only in a specialized shop;
- check the coil directly with the help of a spark plug. to do this, unscrew the original spark plug and put it on the cylinder. Next, pull sharply on the plastic handle of the built-in starter and observe the spark formed between the contacts of the spark plug used. It should be noted that this method gives only a rough idea of the serviceability of the factory coil. The fact that the used plug at the time of testing is not under the correct pressure, as a result of which the standard flywheel, due to lack of compression, will initially rotate faster.
How to adjust the ignition on a chainsaw
Periodically, the adjustment of the ignition of the chainsaw should be performed. This action requires the adjustment of the spark plug gap between the coil and flywheel. The parameter depends on the model of the chainsaw. It is specified in the instruction manual. The average value is the parameter 0.2-0.4 mm. The correct gap is important so that the spark is at the right place at the right time, i.e. е. not earlier and not much later than the fuel supply.

- Clamp the plastic strip between the flywheel and the coil, and then screw the bolts back on.
- Remove the strip.
- Turn the flywheel all the way round several times in a row, making sure that it does not catch on anything.
If the diagnosis revealed any faults in the coil and adjusting it did not work, then the part must be replaced, because the repair is impractical.
How to adjust the ignition on the chainsaw?
As with the constant need to adjust the carburetor itself, the chainsaw used in a private household or on the shaft of the forest should lend itself to the timely adjustment of the built-in regular ignition. The essence of this procedure is to set the gap originally provided between the flywheel of the power unit and the OEM ignition coil. The size of this gap may initially be different. it all depends on the purpose, as well as the design features of the saw. An average distance is considered to be not less than 0.2 and not more than 0.4 mm. - Next, the operator must carefully remove the template.

If, for some reason, the adjustment of the ignition of chainsaws led to a permanent contact of the flywheel, then it is necessary to inspect the tendrils that fix it in its normal place. If they are deformed, the fasteners need to be replaced.
