Overview of Bosch S4 silver battery models
In modern cars more and more often the manufacturer begins to install maintenance free batteries. There are a lot of recommendations about how to charge an unattended battery, but they are all too complicated and an ordinary motorist can not always get into the essence of the process of charging the battery. In this publication will be considered a simple and at the same time effective way to charge the car maintenance-free battery on the example of Bosch silver S4.
Before proceeding to the process of charging it is necessary to determine the battery’s age. Unattended car batteries that are more than five years old are a waste of time to charge or reanimate. Even if you can do something with it, it won’t last long. It’s better to take the old batteries to the recycling department.
And now about the technical aspects of charging. The charger with which you will be charging should operate fully automatically, i.e.е. The charging process should be controlled by the program of your choice. This program will be able to control the necessary charging current by itself, and will provide a constant supply of the desired charging voltage. It is also worth paying special attention when connecting the charger to the battery terminals. Always connect the red terminal to. black to the minus. If the terminals are not color coded, look directly at the sockets of the charger and make the correct connection.
Remember that charging the battery must be carried out in a well ventilated room, because during this process is the emission of harmful substances for the body.
And one more nuance, if you charge from time to time only the battery of your car, then buying the necessary charger is a waste of money, because charging a maintenance-free battery in a specialized center will cost you much cheaper than buying a device.
What are the differences between maintenance free batteries??
To get the answer to this question, you need a general understanding of how lead-acid batteries work. They work in two modes:
- Discharge. When current is consumed, the lead that makes up the negative electrode reacts with the electrolyte and turns into sulfuric acid salt (lead sulfate). The result is a decrease in the density of the acid solution.
- Charging is a reduction process. When voltage is applied to the terminals, the lead sulfate contained in the electrolyte is reduced to metal at the negative electrode, and the acid density increases.
When charging from an elevated voltage (more than 15.6 V), the electrolyte composition becomes low in lead sulfate, the electrolysis of the water contained in the solution begins. It disintegrates into gases. oxygen and hydrogen, which is visually accompanied by bubbles. the battery “boils”. In old-style power supplies, this was considered a normal process because the density of the solution was constantly monitored through holes with plugs made in each jar.
The new batteries, called maintenance-free batteries, are made in a sealed case. this is their main difference. To increase the reliability of the cells placed in an enclosed space, the following modifications were made to the design
- Calcium and silver were added to the lead to prolong the life of the product;
- for the removal of gases in the housing, there is a special valve that does not allow water vapor to pass, which contributes to the preservation of water in the solution;
- Windows or part of the case is made of translucent plastic to check the electrolyte level.
Due to the sealed casing there is no unnecessary evaporation, but it is not possible to add electrolyte or water to the battery. So you have to charge it with the right voltage and current to avoid the acid reducing due to boiling.
Bosch S5A AGM (start/stop). Modern, maintenance-free AGM batteries. In these, the electrolyte is not used in liquid form, but as an impregnation for the special fiber. This eliminates fluid flow, increases reliability. AGM batteries have a capacity for dynamic charging, resistant to discharging. Suitable for cars with a lot of electronics and a start-stop function. Capacities range from 60 to 105 Ah, starting current ranges from 680A to 950A.

Charging and discharging process
When the device is connected to lead-acid terminals, the difference in power between the poles causes electrons to flow. They leave the negative pole and flow through the device to the positive pole. This flow of electrons converts lead dioxide in the positive plate and spongy lead in the negative plate into lead sulfate. This chemical process consumes sulfuric acid and produces water, and the specific gravity of the electrolyte decreases. The battery charging technology consists in converting the lead sulfate formed during the discharge back into lead dioxide and sulfuric acid, and this restores the necessary chemical energy which will be converted into electrical energy during the next use. The optimum charging voltage is important for charging the battery. If the voltage is high, electrolysis of the water will occur with a decrease in the electrolyte level. If the voltage is too low, the batteries will not be able to be properly charged, which will shorten their service life.
Make sure the battery is charged before installation. The recommended charging current is 10% of the nominal capacity, in amperes. The manufacturer strongly recommends that you fully charge the battery before any installation to ensure normal operating life. A new battery can take a charge of approximately 80% after activation The best and easiest way to test a battery is to use a voltmeter or multimeter to measure the voltage. According to special tables in the technical documentation of the manufacturer, knowing the exact voltage, you can assess the state of the charge.

Characteristics and peculiarities
For a long time I was thinking and looking for what charger to buy. The requirements were as follows:
- 1. Ability to charge with a nominal current equal to 10% of the battery pack’s nominal capacity.
- 2. Charge-discharge or pulse current automatic cycle to regenerate the battery.
- 3. The ability to supply power to the vehicle electrical system with the battery removed
- 4. Can be used as a power supply
- 5. Compact so you don’t have to carry a coffin in the car6. Capable of delivering up to 7A charging current at 14 volts.5V (to efficiently charge 70 Ah batteries)
- 7. A starter is desirable, but not essential.
I thought and thought, looked through a lot of chargers until I accidentally saw a small box with the label Bosch C7 and the price of 2330. The price, as a closer look at the label showed, was for a nearby charger C3 (the weaker one). And it was 4650.
I know that the “Law on Protection of Consumer Rights” was on my side, but my conscience suddenly woke up (I laugh) In short, I asked the cashier to call the manager, pointed out the mistake of the price tag and explained that I could basically buy it at this (admittedly low) price.
Came home and started searching online for how much it cost. It turned out to be an average of 3500. I remember the story with Hella PTF and Exist dealer of Bosch. Running the number on Exist: 3395 p and a discount as their regular customer. Perfect!
The box. No bigger than computer parts.
In general, I ordered. Today it came. Impression is pleasant in all but one: in two places in the manual instead of the Russian paragraph a paragraph in Ukrainian. Just for curiosity’s sake, I thumbed through the Ukrainian text. The missing paragraphs were found in Russian. It happens There is another plus: a bracket to fix the device and the wires on the wall.

Technological progress does not stand still
Just 10-15 years ago car owners had to regularly service the battery (check the density of the electrolyte, refill distilled water and so on).
Nowadays, serviceable batteries are a thing of the past. They have been replaced by more modern and reliable (according to the manufacturers) maintenance-free power sources.
All motorists need to do is monitor voltage levels and recharge in good time. It’s just a question of how to do the job right.
How to charge Bosch batteries
Maintenance of Bosch batteries is minimal, but like all batteries, they do require periodic charging. It is best to charge with a special charger from the same manufacturer, which requires at least one push of a button.
If using a different charger, some nuances must be observed. Serviceable batteries should be charged to within one-tenth of their capacity and carefully monitored for voltage. AGM batteries can be charged with any current, but the voltage must not exceed the recommended.
any battery can be charged at a positive temperature if you bring it in from the cold. let it warm up to room temperature. Clean the case and terminals before charging. You need to connect the charger, observing the polarity. For batteries in which the lid can be opened, the volume and density of the electrolyte should be monitored, topping up if necessary. Also during the charging process, keep an eye on the temperature of the casing. when it becomes warmer than 40-50 degrees Celsius you need to stop the process and let it cool down.
Important! Never store the battery in a discharged state.
For successful charging of the maintenance-free battery will not suit the primitive chargers made in the Celestial Empire or in the garage with your own hands from an old transformer. Ideally, you need a unit that supports the following functions
- automatic maintenance of the charging voltage at the level set by the user;
- The current voltage and current should be indicated either by instrumentation or on a digital display;
- Operation in a cyclic charge / exposure / discharge mode that promotes desulfation of the lead plates.
If you plan to work with the battery in the garage, you do not need to remove it from the car. Before you can charge a maintenance free car battery with the charger, you will have to disconnect the on-board power supply terminals. This will reset the controller errors and user settings. Not a big problem here, just some inconveniences. Next, proceed according to the recommendations:
