How to attach the cabinet to the drywall. Drywall anchors

How to attach a cabinet to a drywall wall?

Solving such an issue is not difficult in principle, if you know what methods were used in finishing, and what to do in a particular case. There are three basic ways to hang a kitchen cabinet to a drywall wall.

  • Make embedding already at the stage of finishing the walls with sheets of material.
  • Use special fasteners for drywall.
  • Use anchors or dowels if the sheet is glued to a load bearing wall.

What are the subtleties of using such methods, and how to hang various cabinets on the GKL?

Using embedded screws and bolts

This method is only possible at the stage of finishing the walls with plasterboard. The main problem is that you need to plan the placement of all the elements in the kitchen, in particular the cabinets. Also, this method will not allow you to change the furnishings, if you have not prepared in advance the attachment points where the pieces of furniture are hung.

Batten down, this is mounted under the frame wooden bars, which will then be covered with sheets of material. Mount them using the fasteners suitable to the material of the wall: dowels with self-drilling screws, anchor bolts, etc.

It is important that the wood must be properly treated against moisture, and the surface of the timber must be at a minimum distance from the drywall cladding. After laying the joists, the wall is sheathed with gypsum plasterboards, having previously made a scheme with their location

Fix the cabinets in such places will not be a problem, using the usual fasteners in the form of self-tapping screws, or anchor bolts

After laying the beam, the wall is lined with gypsum plasterboard, having previously made a scheme with their location. Wall cabinets to fix in such places will not be a problem, using conventional fasteners in the form of self-tapping screws or anchor bolts.

When assembling a plasterboard partition wall, this method is almost the only correct one, and will allow you to mount the kitchen cabinets without any problems.

Hanging a cupboard on glued drywall

Sometimes when finishing the walls with gypsum board, you can use the so-called frameless method of installation. In this case, the sheet is glued to the bearing surface using gypsum mounting glue with additional dowels.

To hang the kitchen cabinet in this situation you can use alligator dowels (if the walls are made of aerated concrete), or anchor bolts.

  • Making a preliminary marking, and drilling attachment points.
  • Dowels, or anchors are installed.
  • Hanging the cabinet and securely fixed to the wall.

Using this method, it is important to choose the right fasteners according to the wall material. If the bearing surfaces under the drywall are composed of fragile blocks (gas and foam concrete), then standard plastic dowels, or anchors will not work, they will simply fall out without providing a secure hold

Special fasteners for drywall

Most often, when finishing the walls is used plasterboard construction, that is, a combination of metal frame and cladding. In this situation, the sheet is placed at a distance from the bearing surface. Standard dowels simply can not withstand the weight load. How to hang kitchen cabinets in this case?

If the load-bearing wall is at a distance of up to 100 mm from the drywall, long anchor bolts can be used. But they must be securely screwed into the masonry at least 40-50 mm. This is not always possible, so it is best to use special types of dowels, using which you can hang kitchen cabinets on drywall.

However, it is worth a closer look at each type of mounting, their maximum loads, and things that can be hung on them.

Butterfly dowel

Butterfly dowels are not quite suitable for fixing heavy kitchen cabinets. They can be used to hang light elements, such as cornices, or decorative shelves, which will not carry heavy loads.

It consists of a plastic dowel and screw. At the moment of screwing the screw, it spreads the “wings”, the ends of which rest against the drywall at the back, distributing the load.

Anchor bolts into the solid wall

This solution is used for solid walls, sewn with plasterboard, it is not suitable for partition walls made of gypsum board. Anchoring to the wall allows you to hang significant weight structures, appliances and cabinets on the gypsum board.

For this purpose, holes-holes are cut out in the gypsum plasterboard, so that it is possible to drill into the solid wall and install the anchors. The anchor consists of a metal or plastic dowel and a long screw or threaded hook. I do not take into account chemical dowels, t.к. They are used quite rarely, and have some difficulty in installing.

It is allowed to hang heavy furniture on the anchors, if the distance from the main wall to the plasterboard does not exceed 5 cm. At a greater distance, even a thick screw that can withstand heavy loads will eventually sag. In this case, you can apply a combined method, for example, by fixing the bar on the anchors, adding several attachment points on the GKL.

After installing the anchors, the cut out sections of drywall are mounted in their places. The joints and the hole around the head of the anchor are sealed with putty.

Anchoring is effective if the solid wall is made of concrete or brick without voids. In cinder block or aerated concrete the anchor holds up much worse.

You can increase reliability by running the anchor through the drywall mullion profile. Unfortunately, the places of fastening of furniture do not always coincide with the location of parts of the metal frame.

A disadvantage of mounting on anchors is the necessity of a very precise marking. Possible misalignments and deviations will only be visible when the furniture is already mounted on the anchors, and to re-hang the cabinet “a little higher” or move it sideways is not possible.

Drywall shelves

Shelves. a functional detail of any interior

If you know how to perform drywall shelves with your own hands, but are unsure of the methods of installation, it is better to use the fastener type “Molly” of metal. These fasteners come in different types and designs, with hooks, screws and nuts, flats on the end. Choose those that open on four sides.

Fasteners should be selected according to the thickness of the base. Then a hole is drilled in the plasterboard of the required size. Using special mounting pliers, the dowel is inserted into the previously prepared hole. After that, screw in the screw with an electric screwdriver or screwdriver.

  • construction level-rail;
  • construction knife;
  • electric screwdriver;
  • fasteners “Molly” or “butterfly”;
  • 50×25 mm profile;
  • laths;
  • frames;
  • crossheads;
  • pencil;
  • plummet;
  • sandpaper;
  • electric planer;
  • trowel;
  • tape measure;
  • rule;
  • wire cutters;
  • pliers;
  • Molly installation tool;
  • hammer;
  • Putty trowel, electric or manual;
  • respirator;
  • gloves;
  • safety glasses;
  • bucket;
  • metal scissors or angle grinder.
  • Develop the design of the future shelf, determine its dimensions.
  • According to the drawing, attach the profiles to the wall.
  • Make a frame, which is reinforced by traverses and frames.
  • Dissect the sheets of gypsum plasterboard, cutting the right size pieces. (see. (also article Finishing plasterboard with your own hands: instructions for installation).
  • After that, the shelves need to be puttied inside and outside, painted or covered with decorative plaster. (see. The classic technique of attaching a heavy object to the wall (partition wall) is the use of pre-installed embedded elements in the framework of the structure.

Fastening of heavy objects to gypsum board on embedded elements

The classic technology of fixing a heavy object on the wall (partition) made of drywall is the use of pre-installed embedded elements in the frame of the structure. This method is used when it is necessary to install a sink or heating radiator, to hang furniture cases or shelves, to hang a heavy painting or a bulky wall sconce on drywall.

Brackets are also used for installation of the inside of air conditioners. Frames constructions with embedded elements allow installing conditioner easily in the room without special fasteners for hollow constructions. The embedding also allows fast removal and repair of refrigeration equipment and air conditioners, just like on the usual wall.

The essence of the technology I described in the article installing the sink on drywall. At the stage of installation of the frame for the partition, a proprietary wooden crossbar is installed between the racks or simply mounted planks. After cladding with sheets, embedded elements are not visible and, if necessary, they are used as platforms for hangers.

This technology is the most reliable, but requires prior coordination and planning. Bookmarks should be installed exactly where to install heavy objects and during the installation of the structure.

Order of work

Determine location

Need to determine the place on the wall, where the picture will hang. It is better to consult with other members of the family, so as not to redo the work later. It is necessary to accurately determine the location of the fastener. A pencil and a tape measure will help you in this. If the painting is large, there can be two attachment points. To make sure they are positioned exactly horizontally, check them with a spirit level.

Remove any unnecessary items

Nothing must be placed nearby that could interfere with the work. Move away the chair, cabinet, remove nearby decorations so as not to damage anything and not to get dirty with dust.

Drill the hole

Before that you should make sure that there is no metal profile directly at the point where you want to screw in the dowel. The easiest way to do this is with a magnet. Then we take an electric screwdriver and insert a drill 8 mm in diameter into the chuck.

Before drilling, we put painter’s tape on the marked points on the wall. It will help keep the dust off the drywall. In addition, with its help, the drill will be better held in the right place while rotating.

Screwing dowel and self-drilling screw

When the hole is ready, you need to screw in a plastic dowel. Then screw the self-drilling screw into the metal profile. After that remove the masking tape, clean up the dust and hang the picture.

The features of drywall

Gypsum plasterboard is a material that everyone is familiar with these days. It is made of pressed gypsum, and the word “cardboard” in the name is due to the presence of the usual thin cardboard on one and the other sides of the gypsum sheet. It is absolutely safe for health and environmentally friendly material, which helps to maintain an optimal microclimate in any room, does not emit into the air toxic substances, it is easy to work with and is not flammable. It also has a good level of sound insulation, can bend if necessary (just wet with water), it can be painted and pasted. Plasterboard is usually used in major repairs of the premises to create arches, suspended ceilings, alignment of walls and construction of partitions.

Physical and technical characteristics of gypsum plasterboard sheets

Plasterboard also has its own disadvantages, which limit the possibility of using the material for repair and construction. So, it does not like high humidity and is demanding to the conditions of storage. It should not be used for finishing ceilings, if there is a risk of flooding the apartment from above. This material is quite fragile and should not be used as horizontal shelves.

Drywall comes in different types

There are several types of plasterboard, you need to choose the most appropriate one depending on the work performed, as well as the operating conditions.

Type Description
Wall or standard This is an ordinary drywall that usually comes in blue or gray colors. It does not contain any additives: it is pure gypsum. This is a universal material that has a certain level of sound insulation, which is usually used for aligning walls and creating partitions. Humidity in the room where it is used, should not exceed 70%, otherwise the material will begin to deteriorate and deform.
Waterproof This drywall has a green color and, as the name suggests, is highly resistant to moisture, namely. contains special antiseptic additives that will not allow mold and mildew to develop. It can be used in rooms such as bathrooms, toilets, basements, in other words, where there is a high level of humidity.
Ceiling This material is used to create suspended ceilings, which were very popular in Russia in the 90s and 2000s. This plasterboard is characterized by high flexibility and can be used to create a number of decorative structures. This property is due to the smaller thickness than that of standard sheet. The difference is approximately 3 mm.
Fireproof This kind of drywall has a gray coloring and a certain marking. Usually used to create and finish fireplaces, stoves and chimneys, as well as in rooms that have special requirements for fire safety. Gypsum has certain fire retardant additives in its composition.
Acoustic This type of plasterboard has small holes on the surface, and on the back side. a special fabric. This material is used to improve the acoustics in rooms such as recording or concert halls, etc. д., that is, where there is a need for increased soundproofing.
Arch The best material option for creating complex and arched structures. It is very thin sheets, which are easy to bend to the desired position. However, masters advise to buy it only if the usual standard material cannot be used, because such plasterboard includes fiberglass, which complicates its cutting and fixing. Yes, and it costs more.

Weatherproof gypsum plasterboard

For your information! Despite the fact that plasterboard is easy and pleasant to work with, it is not easy to hang anything on the walls, which are finished with it, because of the fragility of the material. You should carefully study all methods of fixing objects on the surface of this material, so that in the future to prevent the collapse of structures.

How to cut drywall

Basic rules for fixing the cabinet to drywall

If you follow a certain technique, the cabinet can be hung on the drywall. To carry out such work, it is necessary to observe certain rules:

  • All hardware, brackets and other fasteners must be of the highest quality.
  • To avoid mistakes, measurements must be taken before the operation. They help to avoid mistakes, because of which will have to redo the entire work.
  • To avoid accidental injury, the fixing of the cabinet must be carried out according to safety requirements. Wear gloves on the hands, goggles on the eyes.

What fasteners to choose: tips

To hang the cabinet on a drywall wall, choose the following fasteners:

  • Plastic dowels. “butterfly”. Withstands a load of 24 kg. Hang lightweight objects such as shelves, small pictures, small cabinets.
  • Metal dowel “Molly”. The principle of action of the fastener is the same as that of the “butterfly”. It can withstand a load of 35 kg.
  • Metal anchors. This fastener is used to hang a heavy chandelier and heavy objects. It can withstand loads of up to 50 kg. So it is easy to hang a cabinet on it.
  • Dreva dowel. Made of plastic (holds 25 kg) and metal (holds 30 kg).
  • “Hartmut Knauf”. this mount can withstand 55 kg. In doing so, the plasterboard surface will remain as flat.

The choice of fasteners for hanging the cabinet is a responsible matter. It is not only the weight of the furniture that is important here, but also what it is going to hold and how much it will weigh when the cabinet is full.

Before you hang the cabinet on the surface of gypsum plasterboard, you need to make an accurate horizontal marking. The weight of filled furniture must be taken into account. The use of crampons is the best option. If the rearrangement or renovation of furniture is done after the repair, then you need to select the fasteners, taking into account their withstanding load.
