How to assemble a spring on a trimmer

Installing the spring on the trimmer

A large amount of black soot on the spark plug indicates engine failure.

Remove the starter motor from the tool housing before starting it up and determining the cause of the malfunction. To do this, unscrew the few screws that hold the side cover to which the starter is attached. This is done with a screwdriver or special tool.

After unscrewing the cover it is turned over and inspected. Then unscrew the screw that fastens the starter. Then the clamp and spring are removed for a smooth start. The pulley, on which the cord is wound, is now accessible for removal. After the assembly on the cable is released, it can be removed from the pulley and replaced with a new one. Provided the loss of starter functionality is due to a breakdown, this may be enough to troubleshoot. Nevertheless, the other components that make up this element of the chainsaw must be carefully inspected.

The following faults can be detected by inspecting the starter components:

Most often the soft starter spring is damaged at the end, where it can be seen when disassembling the housing.

  • The pulley can be damaged. Cracks or tears, and damage to the back end. Because of these problems, the tool cannot get the job done.
  • Damage to the soft start spring. In this case, the spring itself may be mechanically defective, and there may be defects in its attachment point. The weakest point of this element is the attachment point and the spring tip that is inserted into it.

If parts of the starter are defective or partially damaged, they must be replaced with new ones. In doing so, the new elements must match the model of the saw being repaired.

After completing the repair the starter motor must be reassembled correctly.

The pulley is mounted on top of the spring. In this case you need to check how much they have connected. To proceed with the repair of the pulleys, you must wrap them. This should be done so that it pulls the cord into the starter while it rotates. It is enough to make 3-4 turns to apply the necessary voltage. The rope is passed through a hole in the chainsaw cover beforehand.

Practical guidelines

You may have to do a few more turns to set the holes in the pulley and housing. A new rope is threaded into the process hole and a loop or knot is made: this will allow it to slip out of the pulley. The rope is unfolded so that it does not interfere with further work. Then secure the pulley.

First, the soft starter spring must be replaced. It can be used the same way if it does not show any damage. or a new one if you need to replace it. The starter clamp is installed on top of the spring, which is secured with a special screw. It holds the collar securely in place for a long time, preventing it from tilting and wobbling. Then you need to make a few turns of the rope and hold it in. The cover with the starter assembly in place. It is secured with screws.

Once repaired and reassembled, you can get to work. Self-repair does not take much time and does not require complex skills, but it saves time and money if you do such work in a service center.

To have your chain saw repaired in a responsible and timely manner, do preventive checks and check the quality of your fuel and oil. These simple steps will keep your tool in working order longer.

Design and principle of operation of the starter on the trimmer

Gasoline engine. this is, in principle, the main part of the brushcutter Its power lies in the range of 0,5-2,5 l.с. The movement from it is transmitted to the shaft, which is located inside the hollow rod, and then through a gearbox consisting of gears, already to the line or the blade (working organ).

Also the lawnmower has the following elements:

  • Protective guard;
  • handle;
  • belt, designed for convenient use of the device;
  • the starter, which is used to start the gasoline internal combustion engine.

All parts of the brushcutter are presented in the photo below.

The starter on the trimmer is an integral part that does the starting of the engine. It is shown separately in the two photos below.

The starters for different models of chain saws work on a similar principle: when the engine starts, the tabs, marked with the number 1 in the photo above, engage with the pawls 3. When the engine starts to run, they return to their previous position due to the centrifugal force. The wires 2 also have a similar role.

The mechanism elements return to their original position because of the spring which is wound around the axle. It unfolds when the rope is pulled. After releasing the cord, it retracts and winds up due to the coiling of the spring. When starting the lawnmower’s engine, the starter mechanism turns its shaft until it starts working (starts up).

Today’s petrol brushcutters are equipped with two types of starter mechanisms:

The first option is much more common.

The starter on the trimmer can function without failure for a long time. It is not possible to unambiguously specify a period of no-failure operation. Everything depends on the original quality of the device and the observance of the rules for handling it.

The main malfunctions of the grass trimmer starter

It is not difficult to determine the cause of starter failure. There are several basic options:

It is possible that the starter mechanism is accidentally broken. The consequences will be dire if the wrapped cable is wrapped around the flywheel of the internal combustion engine: then the spring will burst and the pulley will break. But such cases, when you need a complete replacement of the starter, are very rare. In most cases, it is enough to fix a new spring or replace the cord to secure the mechanism.

How to tighten the gate spring?

In fact, several spring designs are included in the construction of the roller shutter. The first spring is part of the element that secures the blade to the shaft. It does not need to be tuned, as it only ensures smooth operation of the Internet and suppresses its inertia. The second spring is the basic element of the so-called PIM (spring-inertia-mechanism) which assures a quick and homogeneous lift of the web.

The point of the adjustment of the PIM spring is to control the amount of rotation it makes when lifting the web. As a result the speed of the lift is adjusted and the length of the blade is regulated, i.e. the number of slats necessary to completely close the hole.

The more the number of revolutions, the more the spring unwinds. the more force it has to unwind. and the higher the rate of rise of the canvas. However, do not aim for the bars to literally take off (or rather fly) into the box. The limitations on the lower bars do not support this.

Tension of the PIM spring

The spring is tensioned when the web is put on the reel. The PIM voltage and adjustments are made according to the following algorithm:

  • The traction springs on the blade (included);
  • the spring mechanism is extended (the number of revolutions depends on the diameter of the shaft and the overall dimensions of the web. the approximate number of revolutions can be found in a special table);
  • the spring is fixed with special brackets;
  • traction springs are stuffed into the shaft in special slots located at its ends;
  • spring stopper is removed;
  • Check the smoothness and speed of the blade (it is necessary to hold it by hand to prevent the stubs on the bottom plate from hitting the edge of the box sharply, and if the stubs are not installed, avoid winding the blade completely on the shaft).

Speed control

We have already stated that the number of coils of PIM spring depends on the sash parameters such as the shaft diameter and the weight of the web, as well as its length in unfolded state. With the primary winding, no special accuracy is required. all you have to do is go into the interval specified by the spring of your chosen model and the diameter of the shaft in your choke. However, further refinishing must be carried out with special care.

To reduce or increase the speed, it is necessary to remove the blade from the shaft by removing the traction springs from the peoria on it. Before applying to the fabric, the spring, as in the first case, is fixed with a retaining clip.

Replacing a torn cord

The torn rope is replaced in this sequence:

  • the old cord is removed;
  • choose a rope of suitable size (thickness and length);
  • passing it through a special hole in the spool, tie a knot;
  • Wind up the spring, making the desired number of revolutions;
  • fix the handle.

It is better to do tension spring plate with a partner, that the edge of the cord does not wrinkle inside the starter mechanism.

Assemble the starter on the trimmer and coil spring is not difficult, but it should be done carefully and with care. For different models of chain saws, the breakdowns of the starting devices are similar, so they are repaired in the same way. In this case, there are some aspects related to their design features.

Repair of starter gasoline drills, lawnmowers, grass trimmers with their own hands

We now consider a more common case where a failure is not so serious, and show how to repair the starter with their own hands, if the cord broke without any damaging consequences or unwind due to the fact that the spring inside just came off, left the grip. At least, at first I want to believe it. But to find out whether it is true or not, you should disassemble the starter.

In the case of breakage of the starter cord, everything is clear: the old rope is removed, we take a suitable length and thickness (can laundry), put it through a hole in the spool, tying the knot. Then we plunge the spring for the required number of turns, and only then fix the handle. and voila! information on how to do all of this is pictured below.

Installing or replacing the starter spring for brushcutters, brush drills, and grass trimmers

But what if we have all in order with the rope, and the coil (pulley) of the starter does not coil? Let’s look at this question step by step on the example of the starter motor for ADA GroundDrill, which has a pulley with 2 metal bars on 2 hooks.

In the case of other types of manual starters with identical design, which are widely used in gasoline brushcutters, trimmers and power drills, the whole process of repairing the starter will look similar, differing only in certain aspects.

Starter Repair: Disassembly

We unscrew the screw that fastens the pulley to the starter cover. We remove the metal tabs, spring. Pull the pulley out carefully, so that the spring does not bounce. Even with the most careful disassembly, it usually immediately flies out of the spool and abruptly turns into a long iron strip or twisted rings.

Carefully take out the white starter coil. do not hurt yourself with the spring!

If the spring broke or broke one of her hooks-grips, then repair the starter is simple and quick do not work. requires replacement of the spring. In order not to squander money on buying a new starter, you can find on sale only its.

If spring the starter just came off, t. е. one of the hooks is out of mesh, it’s enough to stick it in, if necessary, press the hooks a little tighter (just do not break off!) Install the spring with an outer hook in the pulley slot and begin to twist it, immediately holding it with your fingers inside the coil and not letting it jump out of there.

Pressing the spring against the pulley, coil spring inward in a radial motion

At first glance, winding starter spring may not seem easy, but everything comes with experience. With a little practice, you can effortlessly wind the spring into the pulley in a maximum of a minute.

Winding the starter spring is done. All that remains is to assemble the starter and adjust the spring to a suitable value

How to assemble the starter?

The most important thing in the process of self-repair starter is the correct assembly.

assemble, spring, trimmer

After the spring One hundred percent wound, it is necessary to carefully turn the coil and put it in the starter housing in such a way that the 2nd hook of the spring was included in the housing slot.

Installing the pulley (dark in this photo), look through the hole in it, that the hook of the spring hits the slot on the starter cover

Then, in the presence of a spring under the screw install it at first, do not forget to put washers on top and bottom of the spring.

Carefully insert the cup with the tendrils into the grooves of the coil and tighten the screw.

See then that the washer on the spring does not fall out. Why is it important?? The thing is that the spring will scratch the plastic cup with its end, as a result the latter will wear out and the screw will press harder against the coil. For this reason, a situation may occur, very similar to the failure of the spring: the handle is pulled out of the starter, but does not reverse. But when you loosen the starter screw, this discrepancy disappears. Remove this defect starter simple: rather pick up a spring of the same cross-section, but a little longer, or put an additional washer. If we just tighten the screw, it will turn out and fly out, and this will increase the possibility of spring failure, as the pulley will not fit tightly to the starter housing.

The coil is screwed to the body, now we need to tighten the spring. Before this you should remove the starter knob from the rope in advance. If the knot is very strong, you can just cut it or try to untie it with, for example, a pair of pliers. This is done so that after you will suspend the spring, it was possible to put a rope through the hole in the starter cover. The 2nd end of the rope should be secured in the coil before installing it in the body, the rope should not be wound onto the pulley before spring tension. you will do this after.

Before you wind the spring, estimate how many turns of the spool you need to wind the rope. Suppose the length of the rope in the starter motor Ada GroundDrill-5 corresponds to 5.5 turns around the spool. In that case make more than 6 turns of the spool in the opposite direction to the direction of winding.

So, let’s begin. Without winding, stick the rope in the groove in the spool, which was specially created for it. Everything is ready, let’s start tensioning the spring. To do this, rotate the spool counterclockwise. in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the spool when you are taking off the rope. It is easier to do it not on your knees, but by holding the starter with one hand to the floor and turning the spool with the other after the rope fastened in it. If you do not have enough experience, you can rotate the pulley itself with two hands, but the rope will get in the way, which may cause additional inconvenience. Once the required number of revolutions is made, we pass the end of the cord through the hole in the starter cover, put on the handle, fix it with a knot. It is more convenient to do it together with a partner so that the end of the cable would not wriggle inside the starter.

By the way, you can make some improvement in the construction of the starter with your own forces, to secure the end of the spring inside the coil. This is a matter of imagination. At this point I will explain why this is necessary. It often happens that the spring in starters of this type, even after the first such independent repair and installation of the starter on the machine after a few jerks flies off again. the hook does not hold in the slot of the coil. And this despite the fact that the coil is almost tight to the starter cover and the spring there should not free swing up and down, much less right up to the departure of the spring from the catch. It turns out that when you jerk the cable, the spring is pulled out of the slot. In this case you can do the following: cut a not wide strip of metal, which by thickness could squeeze into the groove of the coil along with the hook of the spring itself. So the hook will not dangle freely in the slot, which means that it will not be as easy to break out.

Remove and disassemble the starter, replace the broken parts

To repair the starter trimmer for grass, it must first be disassembled and then assembled. This process is not particularly difficult. You will need to work the form of a screwdriver.

Everything should be done carefully, taking precautions, especially so that the spring in case of accidental release does not injure the owner.

Starter analysis

Disassemble the starter mechanism to install new parts to replace the broken parts in the following sequence:

  • Unscrew the screw that secures the pulley to the starter cover with a screwdriver;
  • Remove the spring and the tendrils;
  • Carefully remove the pulley (you need to turn your head or work, wearing goggles and gloves beforehand);
  • Determine why the trigger went off;
  • If the spring collapsed almost completely, it is replaced;
  • When the spring is out of the hook, it is installed in its former place, pre-bending the antenna (photos show the installation process);
  • Once the spring plate is in place inside the groove, carefully screw it in place.

To change the spring, the work must be done carefully and carefully: it can accidentally explode under the force caused by the actuation of it. Even if you carefully remove the roller, the spring band will come off the reel very quickly and can injure your hand with its sharp edges.

It is not always possible to put the spring plate in place immediately. This often slips, so attempts must be repeated to achieve the desired result.

Starter assembly

The starter assembly is assembled in several steps:

  • The coil is inverted by positioning it so that the spring bend fits precisely into the housing slot as shown in the photo below
  • Put the two washers with the spring plate in between;
  • Put the cup with the tendrils in place;
  • Tighten the screw (photo below).

Doing the above manipulation, it is necessary to put two washers. If this is not done, the spring will eventually damage the plastic cup, and when it is removed, it will begin to jam. This makes you feel that spring has arrived. To correct this defect, you need to install this part of a longer length or an additional washer.

When these details are not enough, you can just loosen the screw a little, and the starter assembly will start to work without fixing. But this option is only temporary. It is better to repair it as soon as possible.

Spring tensioning

After installing the spring, tighten it. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Remove the handle from the starter cord;
  • The rope is then inserted into the groove of the spool;
  • Tighten the spring by turning the coil in the opposite direction clockwise (winding);
  • Produce the required number of revolutions specified in the instruction manual of the grass trimmer model used, and the corresponding length of the cord used;
  • At the very end, the rope is lowered into the hole provided for this purpose, located in the starter cover;
  • Place the handle in place, securing it with a knot.

If the spring continues to fly after repair, you can get rid of it in the following ways:

Philips Trimmer Cleaning | How to Dismantle Blade Setup | How to Remove and Attach Spring

  • Insert the appropriate piece of plate into the slot where the spring hook is located;
  • Drill holes on both sides of the groove in the spool where you want to insert the spring hook, and secure it with wire.

Replacing a torn cord

Replace a broken rope in the following sequence:

  • The old cord is removed;
  • Select a rope of the appropriate size (thickness and length);
  • Pass it through the special hole located in the spool and tie a knot;
  • The spring valve that produces the required number of revolutions;
  • Fix the Handle

It is better to tighten the spring plate together with the Ragtor so that the edge of the cord does not twist inside the starter mechanism.

It is not difficult to assemble the starter on the trimmer and wind the spring, but it must be done carefully and cautiously. For different models of gasoline engines, the breakdowns of starting mechanisms are the same, so they are repaired in the same way. However, there are some nuances associated with their design features.

Automatic line winding on a spool

There is a variety of coils, in which the automatic mechanism makes the winding itself. it is enough from the user only to correctly tuck in the fishing line for the trimmer. The line for the trimmer is fed through the hole on the inner part of the body, its tendrils are pushed through the hole on the outer casing without winding, the bobbin is assembled, and when the winding button is turned the line for the trimmer inside is wound independently. In such a bobbin it is impossible to do the winding incorrectly: the mechanism itself will determine the correct direction, because it can only spin in one direction.

How to assemble a new starter mower?

Build a starter to do these manipulations.

  • Pass one end of the cord through the hole at the beginning of the spool and tie it in a knot. The assembly should not go through the hole. Otherwise you will disassemble the starter again.
  • Wrap the cord around the spool.
  • Install the spring in the starter housing, attach one end to the groove and wind the. Turn the housing counterclockwise to make winding easier.
  • Place the ratchet mechanism on the spring.
  • Attach the return spring hook to the ratchet itself, secure it to the spool.
  • Install the main spring and housing with the assembled ratchet mechanism, connect the starter parts and tighten everything with the main bolt.

Once the starter assembly is complete, pass the free end of the cord through the hole in the coil housing. Repeat the same end through the hole in the handle through which the cord is pulled. Tie a tight knot on the handle. Check the operation of the starter parking brake.
