How STIHL chain saw packing malfunctions

Need for adjustment

Throughout the process of operation, there is a periodic need for additional adjustment and ensuring that the fuel-air mixture is fed correctly. How to determine when and which adjustment is necessary for the machine to function correctly? There are characteristic signs when the mechanism, by the behavior of individual parts, itself prompts when adjustment is needed.

First of all, each time before the next start of the engine it is necessary to check the color of the spark plug electrodes.

By changing it you can determine whether it needs adjustment, fine-tuning of the work processes and improving the quality of the fuel mixture:

  • Black electrodes covered with soot or carbon deposits indicate over-enriched air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine.
  • Brick-gray electrodes indicate that the mixture is ideal in its composition and no additional adjustments are required.
  • White residue on the electrodes of the spark plug shows that the fuel mixture is lean.

Signs 1 and 3 show that a carburetor adjustment is absolutely necessary for the STIHL 250.

TAKE NOTE! A STIHL 250 manual carburetor adjustment may be necessary if the fuel quality or altitude changes, or if there is poor air pressure in the area in which the machine is operating. The humidity of the air, the temperature, the barometric pressure may have changed.

Precise adjustments allow you to get the best performance from your machine while reducing the external environment. Successful tuning of operating modes prevents oil starvation and engine failure due to insufficient lubrication. The lubricant in the saw goes to the carburetor cylinder with a lean fuel/air mixture.

Adjusting the carburetor

Over time there are problems with the carburettor system: STIHL chain saw stalls, takes a long time to start, the exhaust is dark, etc.д. In such cases a carburetor adjustment is necessary. Set the maximum, minimum and idle speeds according to the specifications in the manual. A tachometer must be used for accuracy.

  • Carry out maintenance: clean or replace the air filter, clean the carburettor system and engine, check the chain tension, check the spark plugs.
  • Run the saw for 5 minutes at idle speed. Stop.
  • Tighten screws H and L clockwise as far as they will go without excessive force. Then unscrew both of them 360˚.
  • Start the engine, squeeze the throttle and, turning the screw H, increase the rpm up to the maximum indicated in the manual.
  • Turn the LA bolt at idle speed until the drive sprocket begins to turn. Unscrew the bolt 45˚.
  • If the engine stops or the idle speed is unstable turn the L bolt to increase the speed and achieve a stable running.
  • Turning the LA screw to achieve the required idle speed.

Engine disassembly and removal

The engine is held in place by the 4 screws on the bottom of the STIHL 180. To remove, unscrew them and then carefully remove the engine from the engine housing and carburetor rubber spigot.

To disassemble the engine, unscrew the 4 screws of the crankcase and remove it, then you can remove the crankshaft complete with oil seals, bearings and piston rings.

Removal of bearings and oil seals usually does not require additional tools, but if the bearings were pressed on the shaft with force, you will need a special puller for disassembly.

To remove the piston from the rod, you will need to remove the retaining ring from the seat with a thin screwdriver, then from the opposite side piston pin is squeezed, after which the piston is removed to the side.

STIHL 180 repair tools

To make a relatively high quality repair chain saw STIHL ms 180 without assistance from others, will need to have:

  • air compressor (for cleaning the chainsaw and blowing out the main assemblies and units)
  • Vacuum gauge, to check the tightness of the crankcase and carburetor, also to detect defective seals;
  • piston stop, to limit the stroke of the crankshaft;
  • electric tachometer, in order to adjust the carburetor of a chainsaw correctly;
  • STIHL Torx 27 t wrench or similar;
  • Puller for crankshaft bearings.

Only with these tools can the STIHL 180 chain saw repair with your own hands, can it be done quite perfectly.

Carburetor, muffler and ignition coil

To remove the carburetor, you need to have a head for 8 and an extension, which is convenient to use to unscrew the carburetor mounting nuts and the air filter. Before removing the carburetor, disconnect the ignition wire and the choke linkage from the engine control lever and remove the lever, only then remove the air filter and carburetor.

Muffler. Pin 180 is attached by two nuts, unscrewed, which must be pulled toward you, it will be easily removed.

The coil is attached to two screws, to remove it, you just need to unscrew them.

Why does the chainsaw not quit?

There may be several reasons why the chainsaw does not reset:

  • The throttle valve spring is broken;
  • the throttle trigger jams;
  • The throttle linkage is bent;
  • the throttle valve shaft corkscrew is lost and the throttle valve becomes jammed.

It is not difficult to solve all these problems, you need to carry out a careful inspection and find the exact cause, and then replace the faulty part. As a rule, if a chainsaw has good RPM, idles and has normal power, the problem with the fact that it does not reset is purely mechanical. And finding and fixing a mechanical problem is much easier than determining and stopping a chain saw’s crankcase air leak.

The construction of a chainsaw drive sprocket

The sprocket or the centrifugal gear is a part that resembles a star. It absorbs engine torque and transmits it to the guide bar and saw chain. This guarantees the rotation of the cutting attachment and the sawing process itself. It is triggered in automatic mode, which depends on the value of the engine speed.

The clutch drum can be located on the outside of the chain saw or inside, under a separate cover. It has a protective function not only for the sprocket material, but also for the operator, who can be injured by it while working. In addition to the chain rotation function, the drive sprocket prevents the motor system from malfunctioning if the chain jams or stops turning.

Tips for the technician

When repairing the carburetor, you should keep in mind that it is a complex assembly, consisting of rings and many parts. This indicates that cleaning and repair work must be carried out with the utmost care. If the tool stalls or does not start, then, in addition to the carburetor, you need to check the spark plugs. If they are faulty, spark plugs should be unscrewed and dried.

Excess fuel can be drained through a special hole. STIHL STIHL 180 and how to stop it are described in this manual in part. After reading this article, you can understand that the plugs should be dried for at least half an hour, after this time the plug can be installed in place, starting the machine.

The main faults and ways to fix them

Operate the tool according to the instruction manual supplied with it. Turn on the starter button only after checking the tension of the chain, the presence of fuel mixture and oil. Once you have secured the chainsaw in your hands, you can start working.

If the tool fails to operate, the first thing to do is to locate the cause of the malfunction. And the inventory to repair the chainsaw is suitable the most common: various screwdrivers, socket and wrenches, Allen keys.

Oil leaks for chain lubrication

With this problem sooner or later every tool owner will encounter. The reason for such malfunctions is the leakage at the oil pump and oil tank hose connection.

To fix the problem you’ll have to almost completely disassemble the chainsaw.

  • If the hose is damaged, it is best to replace it with a new one. You can try to fill it with sealant and pre-degrease and rinse it.
  • Oil may be leaking if the oil filter is blocked or broken. It should be checked and cleaned or replaced.

If chain saw won’t start

If you believe the experts, in such a problem, in the first place you should simply open and close the cap on the gas tank. After that you need to vent the combustion chamber and take out and dry the plugs. These actions are sometimes enough for the tool to start and work. If the fault remains, then the cause must be sought in another.

  • The breather valve affects the fuel supply. So if it’s clogged, then a vacuum is formed in the fuel tank and the saw won’t start. The breather plug is very easy to repair.
  • STIHL 180 chain saw does not work if the cylinder is broken. If the cylinder is chipped or uneven, it is the cylinder.
  • If the machine does not start, holds power only for a short time or stops immediately after starting, it could be the muffler. It may be clogged by any deposits from the exhaust process during operation.
  • The chain saw may not start well due to a defective starter motor. To see it, you should remove the cover from the carburetor and twist the special screen, which is located behind the drum of the chainsaw. If the contact wire is loose from the starter, it must be reattached with a blowtorch. If the problem lies in oil leakage, then the starter simply wiped with a rag.

The chainsaw engine is faltering

The cause of this malfunction can be a breakdown of the cylinder-piston group, which is easy enough to repair with your own hands.

To remove the cylinder from the tank, you have to unscrew four bolts on its head. Then carefully check the piston, which should not have any nicks, scratches, or chips. If so, the piston must be replaced.

The optimal pressure in the combustion chamber is ensured by the piston and piston rings, which must sit tightly enough on the piston body. If the piston is swung loose when inserted into the cylinder, this indicates that it is worn.

This defect can be eliminated by boring the cylinder and installing repair parts. However, the easiest thing to do is to simply replace the whole set of CPGs.
