STIHL chain saw oil and petrol ratios: types of oil, choice of petrol and the right mix
Many users of power tools treat fuel mixture preparation rather irresponsibly. For example, I’ve met saw owners who dilute gasoline and oil “by eye. They just pour as much as they want and then come to me with faulty tools.
If you make a mixture with a shortage of oil, it’s all clear. There will not be enough lubrication for the cylinder and bearings, which means increased friction and temperature, scoring in the cylinder and can jam the crankshaft bearings.
What happens if you overfill?? High oil volume, on combustion, produces many residual products of combustion which deposit on the piston, cylinder exhaust window and muffler, obstructing the movement of exhaust gases. The result is loss of power or complete loss of performance.
Carbon deposits formed by too much oil can deposit under the compression rings and do not allow them to compensate for thermal expansion, which leads to galling. in general, the consequences can be quite serious.
Choosing chain oil
After refueling your chain saw, don’t forget to check the oil level in the oil tank. The chainsaw’s oil pump is the source of grease for the bar that the chain slides on. Normally, both fuel and oil tanks should be filled at the same time. Chain oil should be poured into a proper oil tank up to the filler neck. Otherwise it could run out before the fuel and cause the chain and bar to overheat.
Chain oil for chainsaws must be designed especially for this purpose. Using any other lubricant is inefficient and reduces not only the life of the saw but also the life of the bar. This is because chain oil has adhesive additives in its composition, thanks to which the lubricant literally “adheres” to the chain. This property of oil reduces its consumption, thus improving the lubrication of the chainsaw bar and saw chain and extending their service life.
Density is also an important feature of chain lubricant. If you are going to use chain lubricant that is not designed for chainsaws, you may notice that oil leaks when the machine is running or after it has stopped. This indicates that the grease is too thin. In addition, liquid lubricant will quickly disperse in all directions and, consequently, run out quickly.
If you use a chain saw in the winter, you must use chain oil that is formulated for low temperatures or the oil pump will fail. Therefore, the remaining grease in the tank must be replaced with low-temperature grease.
Leading chainsaw manufacturers like STIHL, Husqvarna, Makita, Bosch, and Oregon chain saw component makers recommend you use special highly adhesive oils including biodegradable. But the oils of well-known brands have the only disadvantage. for 1 liter or more. Also the grease in the reservoir can over time thicken and clog the passages. For this reason it has to be drained and this increases consumption. But despite this, we have to face up to the fact that only the use of special lubricants can extend the life of a chainsaw.
Mixing ratio for “STIHL
The German family-owned company STIHL has production facilities in many countries around the world. Office located in Weiblingen. In the range of products for forestry, the field of small tools takes pride of place.
Today is the liquid gold age for STIHL chain saws:
The manufacturer has set the standard for oil dilution at a ratio of 1:50. The suggested ratio makes it possible to dilute 1 part of the oil in 50 parts of gasoline. Or at a ratio of 1:40.
The calculation is simple. We know that 1 liter of fuel oil is equal to 1000 milliliters. The value divided by 50, we get 20 milliliters of oil. According to a similar algorithm, determine its volume, recommended in the ratio of 1:40. By performing simple calculations, we obtain a value of 25 milliliters.
Most often, when preparing fuel for the operation of the saw, the proportions 1:50 and 1:40 are used. That means that for 50 or 40 parts of gasoline one part of oil is added. The calculations are as follows: 1 liter = 1000 ml, 1000/50 = 20 ml or 1000/40 = 25 ml, i.e. in the first case, pour 20 ml in each liter of petrol, and in the second, 25 ml of oil. If there are no instructions and you don’t know the proportions for preparing the mixture, use the following recommendations:
- Tool and oil of the same brand. For example, for a STIHL chainsaw, the ratio of gasoline to STIHL oil will be as indicated on the oil container, usually it is 1:50.
- The substances used for the mixture have different brands. choose a proportion of 1:40.
- The brand is the same, and there is no information on the oil ratios. dilute 1:40.
- If you do not have any information on the saw and the oil, dilute the mixture in the ratio 1:40. The only thing you need to make sure that the oil is designed for two-stroke engines.
For new saw running-in activities, add 20% more oil for the first three fills of the fuel tank. In this case, the ratio is 1:42 instead of 1:50, and 1:40 becomes 1:33. 24 or 33 ml of oil per liter of gasoline, respectively. No other running-in operations are carried out with the new saw. Manufacturers advise to work only at the highest speeds always. After the run-in, the usual proportions of 1:50 or 1:40 are used. In some cases, the manufacturer of the equipment indicates other ratios, such as 1:25 or 1:32, they must be observed.
How to dilute
STIHL fuel mix is prepared by mixing high-octane gasoline and 2-stroke oil. The proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw is as follows: if the power of the machine does not exceed 1.5 kW, the ratio will be 1:40 (t. е. add 25 ml of oil per liter of gasoline), or 1:50 for higher power outputs (20 ml per liter).
Never fill STIHL fuel in a separate fuel can, and never add individual components to the STIHL fuel tank. These engines do not have an oil pump and the possibility of its installation, so the tank is filled only with ready fuel. You can even use special dual-neck jerry cans for easier mixing, but you can also add oil to your STIHL chain saw in an ordinary jerry can.
It is better to fill chainsaws as precisely as possible: too much oil will burn the spark plugs and pistons and provoke detonation during combustion. This can shorten the life of the engine. In addition, the user of the saw is then forced to inhale exhaust fumes with unburned fractions. At the same time, too much gasoline can damage the pistons because of insufficient lubrication.
To dilute gasoline, it is recommended to use special tools. a measuring container for gasoline, a dispenser of lubricant, a syringe, a canister for preparing the mixture and a watering can for filling the tank of the saw. All of these accessories are available from STIHL dealers and authorized dealers.
Some folk craftsmen, in the absence of special measuring accessories, advise to use a plastic bottle: a half-liter container filled with gasoline is poured with a full cap (from the same bottle) of oil. The output is an approximate ratio of 1:50.
It is better to calculate the amount of mixture for filling in advance, based on the anticipated amount of work and the stated consumption of this engine. The tank volume in most chainsaws is about 0.5 liters, the 2 kW engine will consume about 1.2 liters per hour of work (more exact specifications of the saw can be seen in the manual). Thus, it makes no sense to prepare a mixture in volumes exceeding 3 refills in a row.
Before preparing the mixture, it is recommended to thoroughly clean and dry the neck of the canister and the area around it in order to avoid the ingress of foreign substances: dust, water, etc. д. The same is done with the tank before filling the fuel: the cover and the neck are cleaned of dust and clogged dirt to prevent it from getting into the gas tank and then into the engine.
Oil for two-stroke chainsaw engines
Modern garden chain saws can be pre-equipped with 2 and 4-stroke power units. These two engine types have slightly different operating principles and use of added lubricant. Powerful chainsaws with 4-cycle internal combustion engines have the engine crank group lubricated by oil, which is in the crankcase of the factory engine during the active work of the gasoline tool. In the factory 2-cycle engines the lubricant comes from the gasoline directly to the cavity below the regular piston. that’s where the crank group is located, equipped with a pair of bushings and bearings that require continuous lubrication. That’s why you need to add motor oil to the gasoline you use for your internal combustion engines.
Important Features of operation and installation of overhead single-girder cranes of supported and suspended design
To unmistakably choose a specific lubricant for the continuously rubbing parts of the chainsaw engine, its owner should study the most important properties of the material:
- the amount of ash produced. when gasoline is burned, there are exhaust fumes, and when oil is burned, there are ash and resinous deposits. They accumulate on the cylinder and piston walls, making it difficult for the cylinder to move up and down unhindered. Some manufacturers do not guarantee sufficient lubricant combustion, but branded products burn almost completely;
- level of purification from impurities. oils may contain not only useful additives, but also harmful substances. A quality lubricant is one that has a minimum percentage of harmful components;
- anti-wear, anti-corrosion and continuous lubricating properties. the oil should cover the rubbing parts of the power unit with a thin film, thus protecting them from increased wear, heating and the effects of rust.
When developing lubricants to maintain the work of 2-stroke engines, manufacturers are guided by 2 standards: 2T and TC-W3. Oil of the second type is used for operation in standard liquid-cooled engines, such engines are equipped with jet skis and boat engines. 2T oils are mainly used for lubrication of engines with continuous air cooling. chain saws, trimmers and other types of domestic appliances.
The most popular brands on the market among experienced gardeners and woodcutters are Husqvarna oils:
Husqvarna. this Swedish manufacturer never economizes on quality. Direct proof of it is not only brand-name gardening equipment but also high-quality products for the lubrication of its parts. This brand’s Husqvarna HP oil contains a lot of additives to stabilize the engine. This oil is produced on a carefully prepared semi-synthetic basis and has substances that reliably protect the power unit from corrosion and increased wear. During continuous operation, the Swedish manufacturer’s grease burns almost completely, producing minimal ash;
- STIHL is the world’s best-known gardening equipment brand. Lubricants of this brand have a balanced proprietary composition that contains all the required additives. STIHL HP oils are capable of operating the saw in temperatures up to 220°F (122°F).10⁰C;
- Partner. chainsaw oils from this brand are compatible with all 2-stroke engines. They are distinguished by their strong lubricating properties, high level of anti-corrosion and anti-wear additives, and ability to operate stably at temperatures up to.15⁰C.
When selecting 2-stroke chainsaw engine oil it is important to pay attention to the oil’s expiration date. A gardener should be alerted by the manufacturer’s notes that the terms of operation of his grease can be 3-5 years or more. Because the additives in the oil have a tendency to evaporate and lose their basic performance properties
As a rule, well-known brands advise the use of their lubrication products for 6-12 months, because after this time, the oil comes into disrepair
Because the additives in the oil have a tendency to evaporate and lose their basic working properties. As a rule, well-known brands advise to use their lubrication products for 6-12 months, because after this time the oil becomes worthless.
How to dilute the gasoline for a STIHL 180 chain saw
Gasoline to oil ratio for chainsaws: how and how much
From the very beginning of their own emergence, chainsaws have been gaining popularity and demand among consumers in different states once a year (see. best chainsaw rating).
And this is not at all mind-boggling, because they are indispensable helpers in the field of agricultural activities, sawing trees, also successfully used in repairs.
But, even without looking at their so-called popularity, they, like you and me, require attention and a typical approach.
In particular, this applies to gasoline and oil consistency, which you pour specifically into your own “favorite”. Because this additive, and it is its quality that directly affects the work and productivity of the chainsaw.
In this article we will consider all the questions about this necessary water. Let’s find out how to dilute gasoline with oil for a chainsaw, what is the proportion of oil and gasoline for chainsaws, also what oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw. Here we go.
Aspects of the device
At this point we will “dive” into the very core of this tool, so that you at least have a general idea of what your “helper” consists of.
In fact, this kind of tool can be responsibly attributed to the mechanisms of the traditional direction, which work by engaging the gasoline engine.
It is no exaggeration to say that this type of tool is the simplest of all other mechanisms, because the saw has no gearbox and is armed with a normal two-stroke engine that has one cylinder and runs on gasoline.
The main advantage of a chainsaw will be that it is arranged rather easily, which contributes to increased reliability, as well as fail-safe work in difficult and demanding conditions. Next, let’s look at the construction of the saw in more detail, so:
- ignition system;
- carburetor (cf. adjustment of the carburetor);
- fuel system;
- air cleaning system;
- chain (cf. how to sharpen the chain);
- chain brake;
- chain tensioning mechanism;
- chain lubrication system (see: chain lubrication system; see: clutch. oil for chain lubrication).
In fact, the device has been dealt with, but now the important issue is the lubrication of chain saw parts. Many people don’t understand why they need it in the first place? The answer is quite simple, like all mechanisms, a chainsaw, especially its individual parts, require special care, including repeated lubrication.
You need it so that your tool will serve you for many years, because chainsaw parts create movement during work, which should be smooth, smooth, so as not to destroy adjacent parts.
Because everyone understands that the friction force breaks the surface, and here too, if you do not lubricate the chainsaw as needed, the parts will simply wear out quickly and the tool will be out of LADA. For you this is necessary? I don’t think so. That’s why you should take care of your chainsaw, so it has “powers” to serve you for a long time.
When choosing a chainsaw, it is necessary to be guided by your needs, why you want to use it.
If you will need to take it to the similar, then choose a mini chainsaw.
For woodworking, the angle-sawed circular saws are better suited.
Choosing the right oil and the right quality
Naturally, after you have got the device you immediately have the question: what oil to dilute gasoline for gasoline chainsaw? If the right care for the technique, created for work in the construction and garden industry then you can significantly improve the level of activity of a particular device, and not to face breakdowns of various kinds.
Lubricant It should be noted that the most important factors in the specific performance of the device is the implementation of the correct lubricant and fuel. Although the main problems the owners of the technique take place specifically with the choice of oil for their “favorite”.
In this paragraph you can find out how to select the lubricant:
- First, what I would like to direct your attention is that, in fact, all chainsaws have a two-stroke carburetor engine. Also in their “arsenal” there are two specific tanks, specifically: gasoline and oil. In order to choose chain saw oil it is necessary to know certain aspects of this choice.
- V-1-h, do not forget that, for example, models of chainsaws made in Russia require only the use of conventional oils, which are used specifically for bikes, and tools that are made abroad, need proprietary oils, because their requirements are significantly overstated.
- In fact, if you put it this way, it is only you as the owner of the technique, will be able to determine what specific oil for you to use.

Refuelling your STIHL MS180, petrol and oil
STIHL MS180 chainsaw A couple of things to know about what fluids you should put in your chainsaw. Always keep an eye on.
Of course you can put the oil from the domestic manufacturer into the imported chainsaw. But then you must be prepared for the fact that the power and productivity of your tool will significantly decrease.
The ratio of gasoline and oil
And now let’s deal with the question that worries the owners of this equipment: how much oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw? First of all, it should be noted that this kind of fuel mixture is made directly from two quality components.
How to dilute in the right way?
The figures on the dilution proportions are given with such precision for a reason. So it doesn’t say “take about this much oil”. It is impossible to observe the exact proportion by eye, so you have to use something that will measure the exact amount of oil and gasoline.
Some inexpensive chainsaws usually come with a measuring jug with markings. As a rule it has several scales for different proportions. Or one, if the manufacturer implies that this tank will be used only with the saw, which it comes with. There should be two horizontal dots on this scale. The lower one indicates the level to which you need to pour gasoline. The upper one indicates the level to which the mixture should reach after adding oil to the petrol.
You can use a medicine syringe to measure out the oil more accurately. Preferably not less than 20 ml.
In general you fill a measuring cup with gasoline, add the needed amount of oil and shake it.
The mixture must be prepared in a separate container, not directly in the tank of the chainsaw. Otherwise, before the oil is diluted with gasoline, oil may get into the carburetor, making it difficult to start, up to and including the need to remove the carburetor and clean it.
