electric chainsaw with metal gears
Questions about what is an electric chainsaw, how to choose an electric saw, are of interest to both any home handyman and a professional builder. An electric chainsaw is a tool in which the chain is the main functional part of the unit. An electric chainsaw is similar to a chainsaw in its configuration. The two tools have a similar design and function, but they are equipped with different motors.
The electric chainsaw also has a single oil tank. Given that electric motors are lighter, most electric tools do not have a clutch. However, some manufacturers do make saws with a centrifugal clutch or a similar, less complicated device.
In making these design changes, the aim of the producers is to make the machine safer and prevent premature breakdown of the motor and gearbox of the saw when it jams. The motor rotor itself has a heavy weight, but has a tangible inertia. This nuance indicates that if you suddenly turn off, the chain still rotates for a while. Because of the clutch, the chain is quickly disconnected from the engine, which contributes to safer operation.
Signs of chainsaw chain wear
The natural wear of the chain’s cutting links is not the only reason to change the chain.
- Damaged chain links tell you that your chain is no longer good for your home. Can be detected by visual inspection.
- Deformation of rivets and connecting links, cracks caused by excessive tension in the chain which weakens it and must be replaced.
These warning signs are an indication that the cutting attachments are in a bad shape and need to be replaced. It is strictly forbidden to work with a defective chain. Because it can suddenly break off and cause severe injury.
What you need to know before repairing
“The golden rule for do-it-yourself repairs is to use only original parts and spare parts. If you try to install inappropriate elements, other brand and configuration, it is a 100% guarantee of future breakdown and failure of the electric saw. Before you fix a tool, build yourself the necessary base. You will need:
Original factory parts from the same manufacturer. 2. Pliers, wrenches 3. Electric tester, voltmeter. 4. Soldering iron. 5. Round and oval files, mandrel and sharpening block. 6. A machine to sharpen the circuit (this is ideal, but can also be sharpened by hand).
Simplified wiring diagram
A typical wiring diagram may have up to ten pins on the contact strip. Current from phase L flows to one of the brushes, then passes to the collector and armature winding, then passes the second brush and jumper to the stator windings and out to neutral N. This type of connection does not reverse the motor because connecting the windings in series leads to a simultaneous reversal of the magnetic fields and, as a result, the torque is always in the same direction.

The direction of rotation in this case can only be changed by reversing the winding output on the contact strip. The motor can only be switched “directly” with the stator and rotor leads connected (via the brush-collector mechanism). Half winding lead is used to turn on the second speed. Remember that with this connection the motor works at full power from the moment it is switched on. Therefore, it can be used for no more than 15 seconds.
One of the most popular electric saw models. This is a simple, budget, household electric saw, which is designed to perform light-duty work. As the manufacturer points out, the Champion 118-14 can be used “occasionally”. For better protection, the model has additional insulation. Weight 3.7 kg, and motor power 1.8 kW. The length of the bus bar is 35 cm. Runs only on mains power. Great for doing repairs and making firewood.
Champion 118-14 electric chainsaw
A more modern model compared to the previous one, designed for small and medium repairs. The manufacturer has increased the engine power to 2 kW. Cross-mounted motor, additional insulation and a chain brake ensure user comfort and safety during tasks.
Average power and performance model. The main change in Champion 318-16 is the bar length (40 cm). Engine power 1.8 kW. Oil tank capacity of 150 ml. This amount is enough for 1 hour of intensive work. Champion 318-16 is usually purchased for logging jobs and cutting down old trees.
This Champion electric chainsaw has proven to be one of the most reliable and productive. Champion 324N-18 is a semi-professional and can be used for medium-level tough applications. The device motor is resistant to mains voltage fluctuations. Its 45 cm long guide bar allows you to work with large-diameter wood. The Manufacturer recommends the electric saw for cutting down dry trees, clearing countryside from bushes and large weeds. In addition, Champion 324N-18 is a great helper when cutting firewood and large trees.
This is an electric hand saw with a longitudinal-mounted motor. Engine power of the model is 2.2 kW. This model belongs to the semi-professional electric saws of this manufacturer. Busbar length. 45 cm. Compared to its predecessor, this model has improved ergonomics and reliability. Oil tank capacity is 250 ml. Low weight of the device (4.4 kg) allows the electric saw to be used both at low heights and in hard-to-reach places.
Return of defective (faulty) circular saws
The goods are considered to be of improper or defective quality if they have deviations from normal conditions.
- There are deviations in appearance from normal, or not complete;
- There are defects which prevent the circular saw from fulfilling the buyer’s intended use;
- There are defects that prevent the execution of the direct functional purpose of the goods;
- Characteristics differ from those stated in the accompanying documentation;
- The parameters do not correspond to GOST or TU, according to which the goods were produced.
Grounds for return
|Normal||The quality of the product does not meet the standards that have been established for the product|
|Significant||The defects are difficult to remove and may require a high investment of time and money|
|Clear||This kind of defect is detected by routine inspection. It is also detected at the stage of technical control|
|Concealed||This type of defect is detected during the use of the goods or during long-term storage|
Any of the above faults allow you to return the circular saw to a store or other point of sale.
At the same time, there is no opportunity to return the product in the following cases:
- If the defect was caused by the actions of the buyer;
- If the purchaser has been informed in advance of any defects;
- If the warranty has expired.
The warranty period is the period during which the manufacturer or seller grants the buyer the right to return defective goods. It is established for each item separately, depending on the characteristics of a particular product and the requirements of the law.
- Warranty from the manufacturer. which is set by the manufacturer in accordance with the law (for example, in GOST);
- A warranty from the point of sale. which should be at least as long as the period specified by the manufacturer.
The customer may return the product within two years after purchase, even if the warranty period has expired. However, there must be a good reason for this. And the return procedure in such case will be complicated.
If the circular saw is of improper quality, i.e. faults or defects are revealed, according to Clause 18 of the Law “On Protection of Consumer Rights” the buyer has the right for a number of claims.
- To return and receive money;
- To exchange the goods for a new one with the same claimed characteristics;
- To have the product repaired free of charge;
- An exchange for goods with different characteristics and payment of the price difference
- By agreement of the parties to reduce the price of the goods equal to the value of the defect found.
It is important to keep in mind that the choice of one of the above items must be made by the buyer, but not by the seller.
Order of actions
If after the purchase a defect of the circular saw is revealed, the first thing the buyer should do is to contact the seller. At the beginning it is worth trying to negotiate verbally with him, but if all else fails, you need to get serious.
The electric chainsaw’s design and operating principle
The electric chainsaw differs from gasoline chain saw only in the type of drive, namely, the presence of an electric motor instead of a gasoline engine. The machine consists of an electric motor housed in a plastic case, a reservoir for lubrication, an oil pump as well as a bar and a chain that has cutting elements (teeth). How an electric chainsaw works can be seen in the figure below.
Power saws can be either transverse-motor-driven (shown above) or longitudinal-motor-driven (see Pic. photo below).
In a cross-mounted chainsaw, the motor transmits the rotary motion directly from the motor to the drive sprocket. In a machine with a longitudinally located electric motor, this process is carried out through the gearbox.
A sprocket mounted in line with the machine’s guide bar, which rotates to pull the chain. The latter, mounted on the machine’s guide bar, slides on it at high speed. The wood is sawn off with the cutting elements on the chain. Because the power saw blade is wider than the guide bar, the tool does not jam in the material and cutting is quick.
To reduce saw chain and guide bar wear, electric saws have a lubrication system that feeds oil to the saw unit.
About 500 ml oil reservoir and oil pump as part of the lubrication system. The last one feeds lubrication to the guide bar continually while the saw is running. The chain then spreads the lubricant over the entire bar surface and hits both the drive sprocket and guide sprocket.
Signs of electric saw failure
But, like all machines, power saws do not last forever, and occasionally they malfunction. Despite the large assortment of varieties of electric saws, the types of faults they have are the same.
- Complete failure of the saw to operate;
- The smell of burning or smoke from the body of the saw appears during operation;
- The saw’s RPM is not high enough to work;
- Too much noise during work, similar to the abundant crackling;
- The saw does not turn off with the toggle switch.
If these malfunctions occur, the tool must be repaired.
