Oil separator for the compressor with their own hands

Although properly installed oil separators are usually very good at separating oil from refrigerant vapor, they are not 100% effective. Consequently, it is necessary to provide some additional means of removing the small amount of oil that passes through the separator to other parts of the system.

The oil separators in the discharge line are shown in Figure 24.1. Large-diameter tube contains parallel baffles and perforated baffles. The lubricated refrigerant vapor flows from the smaller diameter discharge line to the oil separator, causing the vapor velocity to decrease. The oil droplets have more kinetic energy and therefore continue to move toward the baffle at a higher velocity. Because the heavy droplets cannot quickly change direction and pass through the separator, they settle on the surface of the baffles, and the steam passes through the holes. Droplets are collected and drain into the base of the oil separator and then back into the compressor through the float regulator and tube. Other oil separator designs use centrifugal force, reducing steam velocity and reversing steam direction to separate oil. Each device is also based on the difference in kinetic energy between oil and steam.

When using an oil separator in the system, it is important to limit the ingress of liquid refrigerant into the crankcase when the compressor is off. Refrigerant can condense in the oil separator if it is colder there than in the compressor or connecting pipes. The liquid level in the separator will rise and open the float regulator, allowing a mixture of oil and liquid refrigerant into the compressor crankcase. In order to minimize the condensation of the refrigerant vapor in the separator when the compressor is off, it must be installed near the compressor in a warm place. Separator must be well insulated to reduce heat transfer into the environment when the compressor is off. To further reduce the possibility of liquid refrigerant from the skimmer entering the crankcase, the oil skimmer line must be connected to the compressor inlet, not to the crankcase. Due to the passageway arrangement in the compressor, liquid refrigerant will evaporate and not mix with the oil in the crankcase.

The oil return trimmer line should be equipped with a solenoid valve, a sight glass, a manual control valve and a manual stop valve, as shown in Fig. 23.15 in previous chapter. Determining the oil level through the sight glass, turn the manual regulating valve so that the liquid mixture from the oil separator slowly flows into the inlet port when the compressor is on. A solenoid valve is connected to the compressor motor starter so that the valve is only open when the compressor is running. This prevents the overflow of liquid from the separator to the switched off compressor, but allows to regulate the flow and evaporation of refrigerant into the inlet port when the compressor is on.

  • For a stable position of the structure from the opposite (lower) edge is equipped with a base: a piece of iron measuring 35-35 cm or other parameters is welded to the bottom of the filter.
  • To cover the semi-cylindrical protruding parts at the bottom and top, three pieces in the form of a semicircle are cut out of metal. The curved edge of the rounded edge must match the diameter of the tube. Ensure that the semi-circular pieces fit snugly on the pipe and cover the areas that are not welded.
  • To fix these pads in two of them are cut holes for bolts (in those that will be on top). A third (blind) piece is welded to the bottom.

The result is a device that contains a filler neck and gearbox in the upper part. At the bottom there is a connecting piece for air intake. The whole structure rests on a stable base. If there is no possibility to get a coarse filter from DAF or Iveco trucks (such filters are adapted most easily), then there is nothing impossible in the manufacture of the device in question with your own hands.

The cyclone dehumidifier requires an old LPG bottle (or a fire extinguisher body), an adapter and two metal pipes. First, at the bottom of the cylinder is made a hole for the condensate drain (but you can do without it, if at the bottom of the bottom of the cylinder or body to weld an ordinary tap). The outlet connection is welded into the upper part of the cylinder.

A steel strainer can be installed on the upper connecting piece. However, such reinsurance is necessary only if the air in the room, where the painting process is carried out, is contaminated with fine dust.

Makeshift water separator of adsorptive type

In order to make this type of moisture separator for the compressor, you need to use an oil or water filter from any car. Housing and placement of fittings, as well as the location of the condensate drain does not change. A steel tube (preferably with an integrated filter) is installed in the filter inlet, and the second hole is plugged with a threaded plug, which is placed on the sealant.

The annular space between the inner wall of the housing and the outer diameter of the filter is filled with adsorbent. In order to gradually absorb moisture, rubber sealing rings are used which can divide the entire housing space into three zones. Two o-rings are required. But, if the desiccant for a compressor will not be used often according to its purpose, it is possible to fill the entire annular gap with silica gel.

It remains to assemble the device and connect it to the housing. Calculation of the amount of silica gel is made from the practical ratio of 1 kg of adsorbent per 800850 l/min of air. To make this type of dehumidifier you will need a used water filter, or better yet an oil filter, and silica gel. The main difficulty in creating with your own hands this apparatus is to properly place a layer of silica gel.

Order of work:

  • Disassemble the used automobile oil filter into its component parts;
  • Check the condition of the socket through which the oil was previously supplied to the filter. If it is in satisfactory condition, it is quite possible to make it the point of entry of air into the chamber of the dehumidifier;
