Why mix oil and gasoline?
Most people are used to handling four-stroke engines. Even in motorcycles, this type of motor is now more common than two-stroke engines. The mere requirement to pour oil into the gasoline does not lead to an understanding of the process. After all, there is a whole system in conventional car engines that prevents the mixing of oil and fuel.
The Focus is all about the peculiarities of low-powered internal combustion engines with two strokes. They are very simple in design and do not have an oil pan and pump to force the liquid lubricant into the right places. The crankcase can carry only the cylinder and crank with crankshaft.
In order to provide lubrication, the designers have taken a different tack: they have arranged the system of channels in such a way that fuel not only flows into the combustion chamber but also washes the moving parts from the back side of the piston. Since the lubricating properties of gasoline are clearly insufficient to reduce friction, they add oil. By the way, because of these features, the rings on the piston are compression rings only, there are no oil liners.

It is a widespread belief that high-quality brand-name chain oil for chainsaws should only be used in a gasoline-oil mixture of the engine. Nevertheless, the choice of oil for lubrication is a simple matter. Anything will do, as long as it gets in the right place.
But to put grease on the chain is half the battle. It has to stick to the metal and stay on the bottom edge, which is what wood is sawed with. For this purpose they use substances with high adhesion, i.e. ability to stick to the surface and stick to it. Oil with poor adhesion will fly off the rapidly rotating chain, spattering everything around for no good reason. Of course, some of it will remain, but you don’t know if that’s enough to keep the chain from overheating during intensive operation.

Mineral lubricants that keep the chain and bar lubricated in positive temperatures tend to crystallise and become thick in cold temperatures. This causes difficulties in dispensing the lubricant and increases the load on the oil pump. Its service life is shortened and it can fail prematurely. In winter, choose synthetic materials with special additives that ensure reliable lubrication in cold conditions up to.40 ℃. Semisynthetics are used for low frost and near freezing temperatures.
Evaluations of the use of different chain lubrication oil in chainsaws are that the wrong choice can increase the load on the engine by up to 10%. The life of the chain and the saw bar is further shortened.
Due to the recent emphasis on the environment, branded oil products are increasingly being made from degradable substances. And in the long run, chain oil consumption can be measured in liters. What chain oil for a chainsaw chain?
To know which chain oil to use, check the chain oil manufacturer’s instructions. Almost all tool manufacturers recommend using a product that exhibits the highest adhesive properties. This means that the material used to lubricate the chain must adhere to the metal surfaces of the chain and bar.
It is necessary to understand why grease adhesive properties. While the chain is running on the bar, the chain is travelling at high speed. If chainsaw chain oil with low adhesion is used for lubrication, more than half of the fluid will inertia fly off the bar top and never make it to the bottom. How to dilute oil in fuel correctly?
Dilute oil in gasoline, following a certain sequence. Previously it is poured into a canister or other container, after that in the same container add appropriate gasoline, which is used in a chainsaw. The gasoline volume should be about half of the desired amount of fuel.
Having painstakingly knocked down the mixture and mixed it, add to it the second part of the prepared fuel. Pour the mixture into the fuel tank after shaking the mixture thoroughly in a unique container. Pour the mixture carefully, trying not to spill it.
It is not recommended that fuel be poured all the way to the top of the tank. Usually there is not much room left in the top tank. 0.5 liter fuel tank provides two kW tool power or 2.7 l.С. Fuel consumption is 1.2 liters/hour, so fuel consistency may be enough to run the tool for 30-40 minutes at a critical load. The more power a chainsaw has, the smaller its fuel tank volume.

It is better not to save on buying oil by buying cheap kinds of oil, but to take glue immediately to prevent the chainsaw chain and the tool itself from breaking. It can reduce the damage caused, because the price of the oil pump, chainsaw and tires is significantly lower after they break.
Other drawbacks of introducing non-adhesive oil include leaks from the tank of an inoperative tool. Due to the lack of viscosity of the unapplied lubricant during the pumping process, it does not come out in the right quantity, in other words more or less. As a consequence, it would not be correct to use oils and fuel in equal quantities.
Features of chain oil
While motor oil should have properties such as cleanliness and low ash content in its arsenal, chain oil should have quite different basic characteristics. It does not burn, so it is not required to be free of carbon deposits after use.
The design of the saw headset includes the bar with the drive and idler sprocket and the chain. Lubricating the web makes it easier for it to travel through the bar channel, passing the drive links through the sprockets, reducing wear on the rubbing pairs. Because the oil is applied to the chain surface in special holes or grooves, it must adhere well to the blade, because when the sprockets rotate, the centrifugal force will cause it to fly to the sides.

On this basis we can outline two most important characteristics of chain oils:
- Good adhesion capacity. This means that the oil must stay in the grooves and holes of the chain as tightly as possible. At medium speeds, it does not even come off the surface. These values are related to viscosity. the viscosity of the lubricant is quite high. But too thick could also be harmful to the chain. the oil doesn’t have enough time to coat the chain in the right quantity.
- High eco-friendliness. Chain oil enters the environment practically unchanged, like from a bottle: it drips on the ground, remains on wood, bushes, grass. Once it gets on the snow, it goes into the water in the spring. Its effect may seem negligible, but there are thousands of chainsaws in operation all over the world. Big companies are very concerned about the environment. So they try to make their oils safe for the environment. Many of these are made with plant-based ingredients and disintegrate in a few days. Therefore, quality products have a limited shelf life.
